Agree he has made a fantastic contribution but he has also missed some great opportunites. The one near the end of the Villa game is a good example. The ball was dropping perfectly for a volley which Kamara or Nevland would have hit with power without hesitation. Bobby waited for the ball to bounce again by which time Friedel had closed him down. Why can’t he combine an intelligent, committed contribution to overall play with a killer instinct in front of goal? They are not mutually exclusive as demonstrated by Brian McBride.

I think that Bobby has been a bit of an unsung hero in many respects, but when you watch him play (and I do as a season tricket holder) you sometimes feel that he has lost his killer instinct in front of goal – he sometimes dwells on the ball and looks for other players when he might take it on himself. Aside from that I think he’s been great for us and I hope that he’s playing for us next season.

Whoops. You’re indeed right erwf. Last season and this season merged into my mind when I was writing this and Keegan was indeed in charge at the start of this year. I got a bit confused with the Newcastle soap opera and the number of managers they’ve gone through this season.

Mind you, substitute Allardyce revolution for Geordie Messiah Keegan and you still have the same point,
