Who's a better player in world football at the moment than Cristiano Ronaldo, and why?

I'll kick this off by making a few nominations:

    Kaka
    Ronaldinho
    Messi
    Gerrard
    Eto'o
    Rooney

    What do you guys think?

Ronaldinho's hard to say because he wasn't his usual self last season because of burn out and what not. Kaka's most certainly better and the best player in the world at the moment where I'm concerned. Maybe Messi too who impresses me every time I see him but I haven't really seen him enough. Dunno, those are the two players that come to mind. Ronaldo still has to prove he can repeat his form of last season though.

World player of the year will be interesting. I guess Kaka's a shoe in for first place but who will, or who should make up 2nd and 3rd.

I'd disagree with the Lampard / Adriano / Drogba / Robben bits, but the rest may be valid.

Interesting that you've chosen plenty of divers in there - surely you're not biased against Ronaldo because of that habit?

Cristiano Ronaldo more or less won the premiership for man united. his attacking prowess and pace produced goals and allowed other teammates to flourish as teams looked to double and triple team him.

Ronaldo and Kaka are the only two players after last term's form that should be discussed under such a topic as best in the world. AND, despite being a red devil supporter, the nod HAS to go to Kaka. What he did all season, not to mention against my bloved united, was unbelievable.

Kaka combines Riquelme's cheeky passing with Ronaldo's ability to run at defenders and make something out of nothing.

As far as those that believe Dinho should still be in this conversation don't watch enough football and rely on what the media has to say about him. His form has been inconsitent since the end of last year. The same can be said about Fat Frank as well

well im a united fan and i think at the moment there isnt anyone really thats better than ronaldo.

kaka- maybe but not seen enough to be sure
    Ronaldinho- a big N..O..
Gerard- close but then again not close enough

ok im going to be the first to add a defensive player to the list, what about petr cech? he does make a huge impact in chelseas performances. he may not be what you would pick as world player of the year but hes worth mentioning.

and OH MY who mentioned flabby frank...?

    Kaka:

Simply because he has performed exceptionally at the highest level: the CHapions League. Top goalscorer and perhaps best player of the tournament. He was also, perhaps, Brazils best player at the 06WC.

If there is a better player it has to be Kaka - forget about all the others (well maybe Drogba should be mentioned as a contender, but he doesn't quite cut it for some reason). How can anyone mention Gerrard after the season he just had?

Kaka was as important for AC Milan as Ronaldo was for Man United last season, and no one stood out more than those 2.

That's for right now, but for players potentially as good there are 3: Ronaldinho, Messi and Eto'o. Eto'o would probably have received the golden boot had he not been injured, and Ronaldinho will probably be back next season (despite him not really been gone if you look at stats). Messi will certainly be as good some day.

Sorry to be redundant, but I am a Manchester United fan from the States (another stereotype), and after witnessing the Kaka blow through the competition in Champions League, he has to be the best player in the world just ahead of Ronaldo. If Christiano would have taken over that boring FA Cup final then he would be the best. He played a superb season domestically but as a I stated earlier, Kaka dominated in the premier club competition. Buuut, as Keano stated earlier...how about Riquelme?! I felt for him when Lehman saved that penalty (I'm a Kahn supporter), and now over a year later he led Boca Juniors to Copa Libertadores final and is owning people in Copa America. I wonder if he'll stay put or will another club try to snag him?

Sorry for the rambling. Hope those made sense.

I'm a Liverpool fan but even I've got to hold my hands up and say Ronaldo was the best player in the Premiership last season. Technically him, Kaka, Messi and Ronaldinho are on a different planet, although I rate Ronaldo and Kaka highest. However, if you could pick any 1 player to be in your team I'd pick Gerrard every time. He's carried our club at times and he lways turns up on the big occasion. Its about time McClaren dropped Lampard and paired Gerrard with Carrick/Hargreaves.

Riquelme flourishes in a slow league. Thats why he is over there and not in the premiership. Take away the time he gets to play the ball over there and there isnt much world beating about his game. Based on that Newcastle will probably end up buying him.

kaka was definately the best in the world last season. i am a man u supporter and ronaldo is my fav player. he had a great season but needs to improve in a few areas. 1) decision making 2) crossing and 3) set pieces 4) playing very good in big matches (he does this sometimes but not as much as kaka). if he improves in these areas as i am sure he will under fergie, he will be the best in the world one day.

Kaka was best in the Champions League but Ronaldo single handedly won United the Premiership - over the entire duration of the season he was spectacular...

Given his work ethic combined with pure talent, I would say that Rooney is the only player I can see as being more valuable that Ronaldo. People are forgetting his contribution to the United team. Remember he played this season in a diffenrent postions from his other United seasons. Last season he was looking to play the ball to RVN. This season he would get the ball and there would not be many players in red ahead of him on the pitch. Given that Rooney has had a 'mediocre' (to quote some fans) season by his standards and managed to score as much as Ronaldo and make almost as many assists while playing out of position. While Ronaldo was played in his position and he had a spectacular season and they ended up being as good as each other.

I would go for Rooney to be the only player better than Ronaldo, not through form but through value, at the moment. Saying that I must mention that I cannot stand the Italian league and therefore I have only seen Kaka play three matches this season (CL semis and final). For the most part I though he was good but I will not judge a player based on three games. But I cannont stand him for his dives (same issue with ronaldo sometimes) and for the fact that he does not give a shit about his nation, to be frank.

    Cue the Nani jokes...

Kaká, Ronaldinho, and maybe Messi are the only ones I can think of who might be better than Ronaldo. In any case those 4 are probably in their own mini-league (although Ronaldinho needs to rediscover his pre-2006 form).

Kaka although sensational did have had an average game against Liverpool, who really need to control the game to be considered the best. Against us, we did have had a very patched up defense. Then there is always the added freshness factor when we played them in Milan. Based on several CL games is not enough to make him the best player on the planet. Throughout the season in Serie A he have had a pretty average season. Very inconsistent one too.

Ronaldo on the other hand have had a brilliant season throughout, and towards the end of the season, fatigue will set in. Consider the fact that throughout 90 minutes of every game, he have always continued to make dazzling runs one after another. Just based on my personal bias, Ronaldo gets the nod.

firstly, you've gotta judge on the aspect on which we're looking at.

if we're saying who'd be the best player last season, ronaldo and kaka has been outstanding. giving consistent performances week in week out. both of them have the ability at their feet to change the game with their skills, however if u're comparing them as individuals kaka has a more complete game obviously.. he has a great shot and passing ability, but ronaldo definately leads on footwork and trickery and guiding manutd almost single handedly to the title.

now, if we we're talking about who's the best player still in the career. that would be without a doubt Ronaldinho. no questions. technically hes the best football has seen, his ball control, passing, vision, shooting, imagination gives him a edge over other players mentioned.

so we've to see on which ground are we comparing them, however with development im sure ronaldo and kaka will improve their game and come up with a higher standard.

and lets not forget the legend, ZIDANE. i dont need to say much about this fantastic player who've risen the level of football around the world by much.

i'd also like to bring up 2 names, the brazilians Ronaldo and Robinho.

Ronaldo is up there with the best strikers ever.. at his prime, defenders just practically gave up chasing him whenever he ran with the ball at his feet. his supreme pace and acceleration was mind blowing and his superb footwork and shot technique to add to that.

Robinho's the upcoming star.. just watch this space 2 years down and robinho will have his comparisions to ronaldo, romario and denilson. great agility and footwork combined with a crazy acceleration to get him past players twice his body mass. and not to forget his finishing technique.

lets get to the argentine wonderkid Messi. this amazing kid has a totally different style of play to the rest.. darting runs, quick change of direction, body feints and the acceleration and speed of a cheetah. with his ability and the great coach he's under hes gonna develop each season to have a more complete game and give more consistent performances. exciting player no doubt.. makes defender look like fools while making it look easy.

so back to the question, who's better than ronaldo? if we're talking about last season, yes no doubt he was the best.
but we cant judge on a season alone so we'll have to wait and see next season!

well i think c.ronaldo is the best coz kaka really only peformed in the ucl. ronaldo ddnt perfom that well in the ucl but there only like 8 games. ronaldo peformed in over 45games. and kaka perfomed bout only 20. but in my opinion gerrard is the best but he had a poor season coz of benitiez playing him on the right. he playd has a CAM CF n CM last season n he got 25 goals. this season he prob only got round 10 or 15. but every1 always says scoring goals and attacking is only 1 half of playing football. yeh yeh thats true but its tha only half that gets rekonized proply. basicly all the fifa world player of the yr r attackers or attacking midfeilders. zidane, ronaldinho, kaka, gerrad, ronaldo, messi, juninho, keane, lampard, henry, shevchenko, toti these r most of the best playrs in the world.

Who is better the Cristiano Ronaldo?

    I will only choose midfielders:

    - Ricardo Kaka;
He has proven that he can cope and perform when it actually matters, outclassed CR both times they played each other. without a doubt, the better player.

    - Ronaldinho;
The guy is just amazing and has been performing well since he first hit the scene and even during his "worst season", he managed to score a buckload of goals. ONLY Manchester United fans would ever claim that CR is better then Ronaldinho when in fact, he could not even hold a candle to the guy.

    2006/07 - Ronaldo: Games; 34, Goals; 17 | <-- His best season EVER!
2006/07 - Ronaldinho: Games; 32 Goals; 21 | <-- Supposedly his worst season at Barcelona.

Note; They both take penalties and freekicks for their clubs.

I think that only kaka can be compared to Ronaldo it is too hard to seperate these exceptional players and nobody should just appriciate the talent!!!!!!

there are many players with the potential i would suggest-
    messi
    robben (if he plays)
    and
Anderson (watch this space boys you will be surprised!!

if you wants to say that WHO is better than cristiano ronaldo (except himself), i would say Kaka and Messi only. Kaka was a more complete player, c.ronaldo and Messi were special at some 'point' only. Talk about complete player or team player, i would say Kaka.

Other than that, ronaldinho, robben, anderson, totti, henry, or lampard... they are great players, but compare to c.ronaldo/kaka/messi, they were inconsistent at the moment(from last season until now)
