Given that it looks increasingly likely that Alonso will be sold to Real Madrid. Who should Liverpool realistically bring in to replace him?

rafa will surely have a lot to spend if he goes,so he could be able to get somebody like hamsik or martinez.preferably neither of those, but they would be likely signings should alonso be flogged off to spain

Think Napoli are very keen to hang onto Hamsik as they seem to have strongly objected to any rumours with any club about his future over the last year.
Heard a bit about Martinez but not actually seen him play yet, anybody an expert on him?

Riquelme will suit the team, though he is old, but he should fit in well.
Julio Arca is another option, dribbles for the midfield and also an Argentine.

riquelme wont play the same way alonso does.he plays further up and doesnt do as much work
and martinez is basically everything carrick is made out to be by his admirers,i.e.a top passer,a good tackler and has a good engine.plus hes taller, stronger and more of a goal threat

Riquelme would be a terrible fit for the team. Liverpool need a midfielder you can tackle, pass andis good at positioning. Riquelme can't do two of those three things. They can't sign just an enforcer either as alongside Mascherano they need someone who can a template for attacks and good on the ball which Mascherano, Kuyt and Rieira aren't great at in the Liverpool midfield.
sounds like promising player Duffman, except for the Carrick bit, as he's over-rated..

Makoun, Cana and even Bodmer and Ederson.

What about Veron? He has been excellent since he went back to Argentina! And it would be nice to sign an ex-United player much like how Fergie tricked Owen to sign.
Midfield playmaker, languid, poised, elegant, excellent freekick taker and very creative.
With Masch, Veron could play a very influential role in Liverpool's midfield! The Flat Back Four

Veron is very much like Riquelme

You scousers should be more worried about who will replace Gerrard when he's sitting in a cell for assualt!
Sorry lads, couldn't help myself. First Owen, then this.
One of the best pre-season's EVER.

Hernanes anyone? Wasn't he named the most promising footballer in the world?

If Alonso aint mov'in maybe they wouldnt be worried. then again in they drew 1-1 against Thailand, when they come to here w/o their Spainish Armada and Gerrard, i can only see Mash and Lucas playing in the middle.

Well obviously if Alonso stays then there's no point in buying a centre mid anymore is there? Another wingback WOULD be aprreciated though.

Johnson, Arbeloa, Aurelio, Insua, Dossena, how many WB do you need?
-

I don't think most Liverpool fans care all that much about Owen joining United

is it a tradition that Liverpool change full-backs every season?
how about Degen? he's 26 and playing for the Swiss national team, surely he could start.
Darby too. He is very consistant and is the current youth captain.

My overview for the wingbacks
Johnson -- quality, very good, though that's only one half of the problem
Arbeloa -- he's OK, not great, could be a starter, but is basically set for a move to Madrid, so...
Dossena -- terrible. utter shite.
Aurelio -- better than Dossena, but not good enough. Could be sold for a respectable amount.
Degen -- nah. That's like expecting Belletti to be a starter. Not a terrible player, but not good enough
Darby -- someone's on pot? Darby as a regular starter? Are you crazy?
Insua -- able to be a starter in a few years, though not now.To sell -- Dossena, Arbeloa, Aurelio
To loan -- Insua, maybe Degen
To buy -- another wingbackYou see my reasoning now?

you have a good point but i have to disagree about aurelio.i do actually think hes fairly good, maybe hasnt consistently shown it at liverpool.but rafa loves him so its unlikely he will go

Maybe for the better too, otherwise they wouldn't have a sub

let me get this straight, Belleti would be a starter in about 18 teams of EPL.....
And I think Dossena is better Arbeloa. -
Posted 3 months ago #
Starter for Chelsea, my friend. He wouldn't start in any of the top 4 teams.
-
Posted 3 months ago #
18 teams means that includes at least 2 of the top 4 club.
i actually think Insua should be having a good amount of playing time next season. remember how well he played against Arsenal back in December?
thats according to my Pool buddy in school

Well, I didn't agree with him, he wouldn't be a starter in 18 EPL clubs.
-

Lets see, he can start at Arsenal and even United. He is not a starter at Chelsea Liversea (why do you call yourself a Chelsea fan I dont get)........
-

no way would he start at united.wesley is defintely better than him
-
Posted 3 months ago #
Belletti wouldn't start at United, Liverpool or Arsenal if we are talking about him being a right back
-

Javi Martinez is the heir apparent imo
