Alex Ferguson has taken the serious step of going to see the Glazers over Ronaldo and Real Madrid. United are determined that Ronaldo will not be allowed to dictate his own future to the club. According to SAF, the Glazers are prepared to keep Ronaldo in the stands rather than sell him to Madrid. Do you believe them? More to the point, will Ronaldo believe them? See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/7429756.stm

It is reported elsewhere that Madrid will test United's resolve with a £70m bid: see http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/article4040513.ece

It seems something is definitely up with Ronaldo. Looks as if he has been tapped up by Madrid and is inclined to go. Otherwise, why not simply say here and now that he has no intention of going to Spain until much later in his career? End of story. Why does he have to say he will make an announcement in 2 weeks time? Why all the mystery? I think this is more than Ronaldo simply trying to get United to improve his contract.

Now, we have Tevez saying that he would like to play in Spain one day. Fine. Foreign stars are fantastic additions to the club scene in England. But I think the Ronaldo episode also shows the enormous value of loyal 'home' players such as Scholes and Giggs, and also the younger squad players such O'Shea and Fletcher. United supporters should remember this the next time they are minded to slag off the likes of Giggs and Fletcher.

It makes obvious sense for clubs to make sure that they have a strong contingent of local/home and British Isles players coming through the ranks, who will look to spend the best part of their careers with the club.

How will the Ronaldo business end this summer? If Ronaldo is with United for the start of next season, do you still see him as a United player in 2 years time? Does there come a point when United should just take the money and invest it in getting 3 or 4 top class players to replace Ronaldo? Who would have thought that United would have been able to replace Cantona or Keene or Van Nistelrooy? United have done so, and continue to do so to stunning effect.

He will not go and that is the bootom line. It does not take a genius to realize that, should he ask for a transfer, he will not be able to join Real Madird until his current deal expires and that his only appearances will come in the Carling Cup alongside Wellbeck. We know Ferguson will not be persuaded to do anything, so the decision is in Ronaldo's court: 'shut the fuck up and play' or 'keep talking and rot you little idiot' are his two options.

    Cue the Nani jokes...

Well..looking from Ronaldo's point of view..the best course of action would be too build on what he did this season at united...and play for another four years..assuming he remains world class than. After that go for real madrid..still at a good age of 28.. cuz well...all said and done..real madrid is the biggest club in the world. In that way..he will ensure that he's not disrespected fergie (a man you dont want to make enemies with) and delivered good enough for man united. If he does leave after 4 years..me as a man united fan would be dissapointed but i would also understand that you cant play for others all the time..youy gotta play for yourself too.
But yeah...there does seem to be something up...and if worst case scenario comes and ronny does refuse to play....than united should take 80-90 million at least. But i dont c them replacing ronny. The only ones who really can..as of now are messi and ribery and it doesnt look that they'll go anywhere..specially messi

Sheva, I do not think that Ferguson will let Ronaldo leave until he feels it is time for the Portuguese to go... that being said, Ronaldo will not leave this summer because it is not time, but, if he does push for the exit, then Fergie will just make him sit on the bench for the rest of his contract.

Every year Real set out on a campaign to take a player from somebody. This year it is Ronaldo. Their tactics are the same every time. They use their newspaper Marca to publish stories about a transfer rumour, then pad it out with testimonies from close sources like his supposed godfather. Please!
Next we have England hater Scholari evidently telling him he must go to Real!
This is mostly newshype. Anyone who listened and watched the Sky interview that started this whole sorry mess would have seen it coming a mile off!
The interviewer basically kept asking the same question again and again in different guises until, exasperated, Ronaldo just gave up and said he will sort it out later.
That was classic newshound stuff, making a story where there isn`t one.
He didnt say yes, he didnt say no reporter rubbish.
It is the tease to keep you watching Sky Sports News, when basically there isnt any news.
Fortunately for United, we have Queroz to take Ronny by the hand and deal with all this nonsense.
On a more serious note, I hope that United DO report Real to FIFA, and get this pantomime stopped before the next transfer window. They are unscrupulous, and anyone believing the duplicitous Calderon shouldnt be surprised when he stabs you in the back with the same oily smile usually kept for TV interviews. They have been getting away with this for years, and everyone has accepted it. Well if ever there actually WAS something for Blatter to get all blustered about, this is it. But dont hold your breath, because as he has shown with his latest attack on the Premiership (6+5 rule, he is also an anti English shyster as well, masquerading as a conscientious football administrator.
As much as I love Ronny, he should be left in no doubt that his bosses will not let him go to Real until his contract is completed, even if it means him sitting it out in the reserves.

It seems that the figures for Ronaldo are starting to go to the head of some journalists. There's now talk of £100m for the Portugeezer. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1023435/Real-target-Ronaldo-ponders-100m-United-owners-warn-Wed-let-rot-reserves-sell-him.html. But you'll note that no evidence is provided to support the £100m figure.

Madrid want Ronaldo not only for what he'd bring on the pitch (I think that's secondary) but because they see him as an enormous cash cow for the club, in much the way Beckham was. Madrid's earnings (visible and invisible) from Beckham were astronomical. They think they could do the same with Ronaldo.

If Madrid are prepared to pay £70-100m should United take the money? If they do, then who's next? Tevez? And after him, Nani and Anderson? Ronaldo is the thin end of the wedge. Unless United take a determined and tough stance over Ronaldo, other United players as they each develop into superstars (especially those of Latin origin) will become vulnerable to being ripped from United and transported to Madrid. With a unique blend of English and Latin talent, United have developed a great young team, one which could become even better over the next few years if they stay together. Predation by Madrid could stop the development of this team in its tracks.

If United take the Madrid money now, they'll be storing up trouble ahead and accepting a diminished status as a feeder club for Madrid. After Beckham, RVN, Heinze and especially Ronaldo the message would be clear in the United dressing room. An argument could be made that Beckham, RVN and Heinze were sold to Madrid because it suited United to do so. A similar argument in respect of Ronaldo would lack credence.

No doubt United realise that EPL sides apart, Madrid rank among their greatest competitors in Europe in playing terms and their greatest competitor in financial terms bar none in the world. Madrid must now be met head on. It's more than just about Ronaldo. At stake is the project to make United the dominant club in Europe over the next 5 years, and the much longer term project of overhauling Madrid as the most famous name in world football.

How about Man United make trade-in transfer with Ronaldo to Madrid,United take 2 or 3 players from Real into Man United like Robben,Sergio Ramos,Sneijder and etc. so United didn't feel so less powerful...

mufan's utter lack of knowledge of English makes his joke all the funnier. Haha!!

No point in signing players who are make-weights in a deal and do not really want to be at your club, as I expect would be the case with Ramos, Diarra and Robinho.

Team spirit is a fragile commodity, but it also the element which makes a good side a team of winners. Players not really committed to your club do nothing for team spirit.

    Duffman:

The point is, would Ramos and Robinho be happy to be shunted out of Madrid as makeweights in a deal for Ronaldo? I suppose much would depend on how much United were prepared to pay them in wages!

I just get this feeling that Latin players do not really want to be in England once that is, they get an offer from Madrid or Barcelona. United should not overload the team with Latin players. They've got the right balance now between English and Latin players. Central and Northern European players (e.g. like Vidic), and African players of real quality (like a Michael Essien) can also do a good job for the club and might be more minded to stay for the medium to long term.

It's being reported that Ronaldo is holding out for a new improved contract of about £150,000 a week plus a deal on his image rights which (according to his advisors) befits his status as the world's most exciting player, his youth, looks, achievements and potential. He wants an income which would take him past David Beckham: see http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1023435/Ronaldo-answer-Real-question-48-hours-United-make-stand.html. No doubt, he's been promised (through his agents) the world by Madrid.

If this latest story has any legs, do United have any option but to play ball? 2 more years of Ronaldo at Old Trafford would be great. Sell him then for £70-£100m, if you can get it. By then, Nani and Anderson should be about ready to enter superstar level. Only problem is, they'll probably start agitating for a move to Madrid as well! Oh, well you win the Double, and then....what fun and games!

is it strange that when Real Madrid talk to ronaldo fergie gets his nickers in a twist. but its fine for man u to do the same to other players from teams. Like Rio and tevez.
What goes around comes around. expect for ronaldo's one way flight to Madrid

    nice photo frankie...

I actually do not think that Ronaldo has any kind of team spirit... he is just the same as three guys who would come to United as bait: he is a merchant, they are money. Same thing, really.

But honestly, Robinho is worth as much as Ronaldo; Ramos is worth more than Ronaldo and we would love to get them two plus money for CR. Well, I would.

Man Utd's Ronaldo admits he wants Real Madrid move
    tribalfootball.com - June 03, 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo is planning to quit Manchester United for Real Madrid, it has been revealed.

The Sun says Ronaldo has told friends: "If I don't leave Manchester United now, I certainly will in a year."

The Portugal winger and his agent Jorge Mendes are now considering their get-out strategy.

Ronaldo believes that having now won the Champions League and Premier League double it is the right time to chase his dream of joining Real Madrid.

The 23-year-old may have to concede staying at Old Trafford for one more season.

But it seems inevitable that he will leave sooner rather than later.

Ronaldo chooses Real Madrid cash over Man Utd stay
    tribalfootball.com - June 04, 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to quit Manchester United for Real Madrid's £150,000 a week after tax deal, it has been revealed.

The Guardian says the Portugal international has informed his agent, Jorge Mendes, that he wants to play in Spain and his decision has already been outlined to Madrid, encouraging them to step up their attempts to prise him from Old Trafford.

Ronaldo is being offered a salary in the region of £150,000 a week after tax and has told his closest associates that the financial rewards, as well as the opportunity to play for a club of Madrid's prestige, are too good to turn down.

Relations between the two clubs have been severely strained and the latest developments will cause intense dismay to Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been increasingly vocal in his criticism of Madrid. There is also a growing sense of foreboding about Ronaldo's motives, specifically the manner in which he has repeatedly adapted his line in a string of media interviews.

Ferguson had wanted the player to hold a press conference, or, at the very least, put out a statement, committing himself to the club, but Ronaldo has made it clear he plans to do nothing of the kind.

Mendes is believed to be in almost daily contact with Madrid and looking at ways to soften United's resistance. Whether that is possible remains to be seen as United have threatened to report the Spanish champions to Fifa and Ferguson has said he would rather let Ronaldo rot in the reserves than sanction the deal.
