The out-of-contract striker will take a 50 per cent pay cut for a shock last chance to rescue his injury-plagued career.

United boss Alex Ferguson contacted Owen, 29, on Tuesday and offered him £50,000 a week to join the champions - plus huge bonuses depending on appearances and goals.

But Owen must pass a stringent medical, which could take place as early as today, before United put pen to paper.

A source close to Owen confirmed: "It's incredible that one day Michael was contemplating a move to Hull and now Manchester United have come in.

"This is just the boost he needed and now he is hoping that everything can be agreed."

Fergie's shock move comes after United missed out on Lyon striker Karim Benzema, sold Cristiano Ronaldo for £80million and lost Carlos Tevez.

Owen, axed by England boss Fabio Capello, started his career at United's hated rivals Liverpool.

He became a free agent two days ago after his contract ran out at Newcastle.

But not in his wildest dreams could he have imagined Fergie would come in.

The only clubs being seriously linked with him were Stoke and Hull, while Everton were said to be weighing up their options and Greek side Olympiakos flatly denied any interest.

Owen's agents have tried over the years to get Fergie to bite and he has refused.

But he showed a flicker of interest in January and decided to wait to see how the summer transfer market unfolded.

United have bought centre-half SEAN McGINTY, 16, from Charlton for £500,000.

It makes a sad sort of sense. Pissing away 15-20M on a mediocrity like Huntelaar or an absolute unknown like Gignac makes less sense.

I STILL MISS NOBBY & BOBBY!!!

But will he make a bang at United, though, that's the question. Is it the right signing ? He has not been the Michael Owen of old in recent times. I'm against the move but if he comes I'll support him through thick and thin.

I think it's a good move for Owen, and Utd. I just hope they have better physios than Newcastle. :P

I've been over this a million times and it still doesn't make scene to me :? :!:

would it be better to spend 5 or 6 mil and get a young promising kid from Argentina or something

I just read a really good article at manutd.com by a fan. Said all the stuff and convinced me that Owen CAN be a masterstroke ! ManUtd will ease him back from any niggling injuries he gets, he'll have all the time in the world and even if he does 'flop', he cant be called a flop at all because there was no transfer fee and he is certainly taking a reasonable amount of pay-cut.

But... It's beyond reason... this seems almost like a desperation move :!:  But Utd are anything but desperate, and with 80 mil quid in the bank they aren't broke... I mean a week ago he was liked with hull or panathanikos... what the f*ck is going on :!: :!: :!: :?

It's so sweet of you to worry about United, Ghost! I don't really see the need because his legs have gone, but he can still be a fine late sub tap-in artiste, in and around the offside line just like Crespo and Pippo!

haha, don't worry bobo its not united i'm worried about... I think fergie might have finally snapped and lost his marbles. And as a medical student it's my obligation to help the deranged elderly.

Whether he makes it or not at United, Fergie has just seen a minimal-risk deal that could really pay off.

He will sign on a free, take a very basic salary with a pay-as-you-play cause, which, if he plays well, could take him back up close to the money he was earning at Newcastle, just incase he needed futher motivation

So, even if he is a flop, United kick Liverpool where it hurts before ending one of their favourite son's careers, which is priceless, in my opinion.

I think he'll be a success. Did you guy's read the brochure they put about for Owen? It does explain a lot of his injury problems, and none of them are recurring which is a good sign.

Newcastle's backroom staff was forever changing so nobody there could file a decent report and keep him in check, United do things very differently. Solksjaer wasn't injury free but he was a quality squad player, and Owen won't complain about being on the bench like Tevez.

I have a really good feeling about this.

Although I disliked Owen (mainly because he used to play for Liverpool!), I did feel sorry for the bad luck he encountered! No football should have to endure that.

But, in all honesty, Fergie wouldn't of signed him if he didn't have plans...

duff, Owen's not at fault so much for his injuries, it's the damn Toon physios, and I'm pretty sure that Mnu has better physios that would be able to prevent anything terrible from happening.

    Owen

even if he fails to make the grade, Fergie will just lose abit of his pride, but he will sleep well every night.

actually i am surprised no one in Real are as desperate as Owen to leave their club, i mean c'mon, 3 top stars arriving at your club and you rather rot the rest of your career on the bench?

Most of them are going to be sold anyway, so they're not making such a big fuss.

England might turn out to be the biggest winners out of this deal at the World Cup. Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney playing together is mouth-watering, hope it pans out...not for England, though.

Ahmed, Owen and Rooney have never played well together, tell me a match where they did play well before.

wonder who else might be coming. if Liversea is spot on, could we get Sneijder or van der Vaart?

Ahmed, Rooney and Owen NEVER played well together for England, but their relationship has been frought with problems because of Owen's gambling connections and his 'debt collector' friends from Liverpool. I would think that would have been Ferguson's other major concern when signing him apart from injuries. As with Messi, the major concern is whether he ruined the muscle tissue around his knees and hams when he was bulking up with HGH and steroids at seventeen.

They will be together for 10 months now before the world cup. They will get chances and learn to play together up front. Anyway, I couldnt care less for England.

Haha making your loyalties very clear Ahmed! If we're gonna pick up anyone Dutch from Madrid it's gotta be Sneijder. We're a bit poor with dead ball specialists at the minute, and Tosic isn't a first team player yet. He can offer more dimensions to the team than both Van Der Vaart and Huntelaar.
