1.Essien - no doubt he is the best ATM.
2.Senna - not only his tackling, his passing is dead accurate.
3.De Rossi - his long range shooting is a bonus to his defensive skills
4.Mascherano - his positioning is remarkable
5.Tymoschuk - this guy is coming to Bayern in the summer, and we might see how good he really is.
    6.Cambiasso - no nonsense guy
7.S.Keita - hard tackling and imo better than Yaya Toure
8.M. Diarra - had a bad 08/09 season, where his number was given up to Lassana. but other seasons, will prove he is a top notch DM.
9.L. Diarra - ATM he is better than Flamini, cant believe how Arsenal let this guy leave so easily.
10.Yaya Toure - have the sheer strength of the modern day DM. his ball retention technique is very good.

Mikel is crap, i am glad he didnt join United.

Diaby, hmm, i generally know he plays in CM, but dont know if he is DM or not(need to check my Football Manager) but i think overall and defensive-wise, Fabregas or Denilson beats him.

Are the likes of Lassana Diarra, Jeremy Toulalon, Daniele De Rossi and Michael Essien really 'defensive' midfielders though? It really depends on your perception of them and the defensive midfielder role. Personally i don't regard them in that category because they do so much in an advanced role like creating and scoring but with the capabilities to get stuck in and defend.

My list of 5 Defensive midfielders is picked on players who 90% of the time defend and protect the back four.

    1. Marcos Senna - Great timing in the tackle and even better positional sense which means he always appears in the right position at the right time to slow down and intercept opposing attacks. Great technical ability with an ability to pass and move which matches the very best play makers. His defensive capabilities are what has allowed Spain to attack and enjoy success recently and he has an equally important role at Villarreal who are continuing to punch above their weight in Spain.

    2. Javier Mascherano - Great positional sense with a natural aggression and a will to win. Tackles well with good timing and passes simply but affectively. His leadership qualities are obvious and he appears to motivate and inspire those around him whether it's for Liverpool or Argentina.

    3. Yaya Toure - Tall and strong with perfect timimg in the tackle. Patrolls the space in front of defence with authority and spreads the play with ease. His passing is definitely underrated in a team full of passers. His defensive protection allows the likes of Iniesta, Xavi and Messi to play with freedom.

    4. Anatoliy Tymoschuk - A natural leader and another player with a great positional sense. Rarely strays from his position in front of the defence and provides a vital role for Club and Country. His 'screening' of Zenit's defence was as crucial as Arshavin's goals during Zenit's Uefa Cup win and he assumes a real calmness and resilience on the pitch which cannot be underestimated. Yet to prove himself in a tough and competitive league but should get the chance with a summer move to Bayern Munchen. That should show us how good Tymoschuk really is and if he proves himself then he should be classed in the same bracket as any defensive midfielder in the world. IMHO he's that good.

    5. Lorik Cana - Consistantly impressed in France and has been Marseilles best player for a while now, certainly their most consistant. Highly underrated IMHO and possibly needs a move to Italy, Spain or England if he is to be considered in the same bracket as those others mentioned above. The Marseille captain is a true leader who commands respect. His passing isn't spectacular but he rarely misses a team mate and it's simplicity offers beauty at the same time. A tough tackling player who doesn't shirk the 'ugly' side of the game, his influence would be a big miss for his club should he decide to move on. IMHO he needs a fresh challenge and would be a quality signing for a club in the top 3 leagues, especially for Arsenal who are after a player like him.

    Lassana is extremely overrated.

    Essien
    De Rossi
    Maka
    Mikel
    Cambiasso
    Senna
    Toulalan
    Makoun
    Tymoschuk

Mikel is "The best" natural midfielder in all of England, and you people are afraid to admit it.
Hamburg I dont know what the Fuck u watch from the EPL?

John Obi Mikel is a class act whether people want to admit it or not. He looked out of his depth last season but since he has adapted to the pace in England he looks a different player. He's incredibly strong, Calm on the ball, assured in possession and tough in the tackle. If he continues his development at the rate he is going then he is going to be considered one of the tip midfielders in Europe in 4/5 years time.

I have to admit i thought he was a waste of space last season but he has really come into his own this year. Mikel should have a very big future in the game, just as long as his big head doesn't get in the way of his talent!

Essien and Mikel work perfectly, cause Essien like to go forward alot. Mikel can not shoot, thats why they want him at defensive rather then offensive mid, his passing works in both positions as well. Makoun is what I call the closest thing to Essien that has yet to come. He is no essien, but he is the closest player. He attacks well and defends well.

2 DM in City midfield? then where's Ireland? 5 man midfield?

well Kompany isnt used to his potential as yet.

City has Richards and Dunne in the centre, so both to move in place of Lescott and Toure? you kidding me right?

Robben is too injury prone & SWP & Robinho won't be dropped I am thinking. Dunne is going to Birmingham i'm hearing. Kompany & Onouaha will play CB Barry & De Jong/Zabaletta will play defensive midfield
    ______________Tevez_______________
    Robinho_______Ireland__________SWP
    ________Barry______De Jong________
    Bridge__Kompany__Onouaha__Richards
    _____________Given________________

    Next seasons most likely lineup.

I do I think he's pure class his passing ability is tremendous & City & Hughes are too stupid to see how good he really is! City will always fail because they are stupid! Sturridge left because last season Vassell & Benjani were getting played ahead of him! They have signed Santa Cruz who is immensely injury prone! They won't end up signing Eto'o because Hughes will bottle it! Bellamy will get injured next season so will Santa Cruz then they will be left with who exactly? Jo & Tevez who will get like 10 goals between them! SWP will be dropped to the bench & want out! City will fail

Good job bobo, that's a top 20, you exceeded lucky's expectations by a good 12 defensive midfielders!

I'm not sure about Scott Brown, though. Maybe Sidwell in his place?

Yeah, counting has never been my strong suit. I like Scott Brown. He's very combative and should do a good job if he gets into the EPL. Have to admit I've never seen Sids at anywhere but LB.

He does have many good defensive midfielder qualities, as well.
