Should Owen and Martins stay or go?

On one hand Newcastle can be held hostage through their buy-out clauses. On the other hand both players want to win trophies now, not in 3 years (especially in the case of Owen). 3 of the top 4 are after a striker.

What should Owen and Martins do? What should Newcastle do?

I don't think the same can be said for both players.I do not feel Martins owes Newcastle anything and if a club meets the buy-out clause, then he should be free to move on.

Owen on th eother hand, has done nothing for newcastle apart from collecting a pay check every week, he most certainly owes them something. Owen would have to be a comlpete scumbag to turn his back on newcastle having cost them millions and given them nothing in return.

I think both players will stay - partly of because what Sam Allardyce has already done at Newcastle - and there's certainly great excitement building with the Geordie fans - yes I know that's not unusual.
But think both will stay at Newcastle because they want to - and hopefully they will help contribute to Newcastle eventually starting to challenge the big 4 in next couple of years or so.

Tauren - good post - agree completely on both players - but still hope Martins stays.

Ahmed, SHOULD Owen and Martins go? No. As Tauren says Owen owes Toon big time and should stay provided he really wants to be there. Martins and/or his advisors should have sense to stay too. Huge promise and he'll be surrounded by better players Sam has already brought in and will bring in this year. WILL they go? No.
Ahmed, would hardly describe "loss" of Steve Sidwell and Ben Haim as sickening blows. They both proved they haven't much going on between the ears when they decided to take big bucks to warm the Chelski benches for two-thirds of the season. Maybe Sam was personally disappointed in Ben Haim but I think he's well over it by now. I certainly am.

toonloon - fair enough, but steve sidwell and ben haim are proven Prem players - more than what I could say for rozenhal. criticising players who reject your club for a bigger team is petty, IMO.

Admin, I wasn't criticising players at all...I was trying to put their so-called 'loss' into some proper perspective. Both are good players but not signing them is, I repeat, hardly a sickening blow. A sickening blow? Hmm. Let's think. Yes, I know...why don't we ask Arsenal fans what a sickening blow feels like in light of a certain player's recent departure? And I'm really too old to be petty.

Henry's departure wasn't a sickening blow though to be honest Toon. Much as I appreciate what he's done for us, we did enjoy his peak. Had we lost Henry a few years back I'd have been bloody livid but we got a good deal and I thought it was the right time to move on.

Anyhow, back on topic, I do think Owen and Martins will stay. Owen because he hasn't done much at Newcastle yet apart from, as mentioned earlier in the thread, pick up his paycheck. I can't see a better offer coming in anyway - Arsenal would appear to be sorted, United should have better targets in mind and Liverpool are on their way to signing Fernando Torres it would seem. No, I think he'll stay. As for Martins, I doubt there are many clubs out there's who'd be willing to meet his release clause, to be honest, and again it's a case of no better offers unless some foreign club comes in for him but even then, Newcastle are in a good position at the moment.

So no, I expect no player to leave. Allardyce is a very good manager and there is money to be spent, Newcastle are on the up.

Then I guess Big Sam should start spending money.

Martins would cost a lot in wages - in that respect Bent seems a better buy. Ditto with Owen - who would pick up that wage tab? And Dyer?

In some respects Newcastle are lucky that they pay their players that much :)

they should stay, Owen especially for ethical reasons if not anything else. and i think the possibility of Big Sam really turning things around up in St James Park will hold them there for another season at least.

however, i can see Martins leaving next summer, possibly to a 'big' (i.e. trophy winning) club, possibly elsewhere in Europe. i cant help but think newcastle made a huge mistake in putting a release clause in his contract, especially such a realistic one. if he has another good season there will be takers next year, and newcastle will not be able to fend them off.

owen on the other certainly owes something to the geordie fans. if ever there was a player that has under delivered for a team it is him (admittedly through no real fault of his own). considering his injury record i cant see anyone even triggering his release clause anyway, he is simply too much of a risk. he needs to get fit and repay the wages, and more importantly the faith, that newcastle have invested into him first

i think with the new management at newcastle it's gonna be a lil more exciting

owen or martins will feed of viduka nicely.. as u've seen him do it with yakubu.
so i think most likely the 3 of them will fit nicely into the new side.
