Ballack wins balls in the air, breaks open defenses with a well-timed pass, tackles back to support his defenders, and holds a towering air of authority on the field that builds confidence even in a team clearly short of its best form.

Oh, and he scores with great free kicks.

Thanks to Ballack's thunderous strike, Germany has taken its expected place in the quarterfinals. Now he can compare his long-range shooting skills with Ronaldo when his team faces Portugal in an attractive matchup in Basel, Switzerland, on Thursday.

Cristiano vs (my boy) Ballack...who do you think is going to influence that game more?

You don't win a silver medal, you lose the gold!

mufan's utter lack of knowledge of English makes his joke all the funnier. Haha!!

I don't know who will shine more but I'd place my bets on Portugal clearly because Ballack is BADLUCK.

For someone who, Missed the Bundesliga title when Leverkusen almost won it, losing the German Cup Final, losing the Champions league final twice, missing out of World Cup final, missing the Premiership. There is no way this guy can actually win something big. The list speaks for itself.

But then in football, every dog has his day.

that's no the point raed. the point is i honestly feel Ballack has way more influence on the Germans and is much more reliable in the clutch situations than Cristiano is. And i'm not just saying that because i love Chelsea. I think Ronaldo is a lor of flair and flam and i agree he's had a phenomenal season BUT i'm not conviced after all that, that he's a 'go to' guy when your team is crumbling. He flops and cries way to0 much about fouls and I've seen him shut down or dissapear many times during games this season. But its like the quote from foxsports says...Ballack is mister reliable. He is so much of a leader an always a leader by example. He does EVERYTHING for his team and he's good at EVERYTHING (except in goal) but I just feel like Ronaldo like most other English phenomenons has had that breakout season where everything he touched turned to goal/gold and though I think he's good to me he is not yet the player people are making him out to be.
My ultimate footballing hero is Zinidine Zidane and he's defintely proved his class and the level he should be placed at. I therefore am offended when people try to rank this upstart Ronaldo as being 'the player of the last two decades' or 'the player of the generation' or 'the best thing since maradona' These are all descriptions people have used for Ronaldo and I feel he hasn't earned these stripes as yet.
Not to be ranked with the likes of Maradona and Zidane...these men are icons, legends. I'd quicker rank men like Brazil's Ronaldo or Van Basten before Cristiano.

You know what..i think my problem is?
ALL my favorite players..Messi, Ballack, Zidane....at some point in time in their career i've seen them literally carry the fight of their entire team against REAL BIG OPPOSITION but i've never really seen Cristiano do that. I've seen him have moments of brilliance against big opposition but not an entire game against a Liverpool or a Chelsea or an Arsenal or for that matter against a Germany or a Holland in a big tournament. He's had games against Wigan's and Middlesboro's or San Marino or Luxembourg where he can dominate but not against a TOP TEAM. And my players tend to be players who have proven they can crush the biggest and baddest. I've never seen Cristiano CRUSH big teams.

I think the thing is, Cristiano has had that run of good form lately while Ballack has done just enough to get by (in Euros that is). If you watched that match against Croatia, Ballack, I would argue played just plain poorly. Couldn't put passes together, gave the ball away, and already with a yellow card playing just recklessly fouling players. I watched the match with some buddies, and it was pretty much agreed on that he just wasn't playing like himself. As Ballack goes, so go the Germans. No German played well on that team that game.

I think Ballack is more influencial to the German side and definetely carries that team at times, but I think Cristiano is more skillful. (I know this is going to be pretty controversial as I type this, but...)You just have to ask yourself, whats more important to you: A player who can really carry a team but sometimes can falter, or a player with tremendous skill, poor sportsmanship, but produces goals most of the time.

rhianjoseph, you will get to test out who is better against each other in the next round with a Germany v. Portugal match

What? I didn't foul him, I just nudged him a bit

Okay, 1st things first, Ronaldo is still very young compared to the players you are describing, he still has a lot to learn and that is why he is being compared to great players that you don't think he deserves. Ballack on the other hand has passed his prime and has a lot of experience. He can step up in big games and feel much less pressure than Ronaldo would in the same game.

This doesn't mean that Ballack does not play well. Ballack is a central midfeilder. Ronaldo is a natural winger. You have to consider that Ronaldo scores a lot more goals than Ballack which more than makes up for the defending he doesn't do. Given that if he did, we may conceed a couple of less goals but it would mean he won't be at the other end of the pitch scoring a lot of goals that has brought us the title.

As for the diving and complaining he is associated with, I don't have to tell anyone that Ballack has had more than his fair share of that this season. Okay maybe not diving... And since you're a Chelsea fan, I'd like to bring up that every time a decision goes against Chelsea, there's always 5-6 players surrounding the ref, claiming the decision was wrong. And everyone knows that Ronaldo has severely downgraded his diving in the last couple of seasons and because of his "reputation", United haven't had many penalties given, which would clearly be given to any other team.

No doubt his free kick was good against Austria but it was pure power that beat the goalie. His free kick "ability" is nowhere near Ronaldos. Have you ever seen him curl the ball twice in the air? Ballack may defend a lot more and get some goals as well but as far as the comparison goes, Ronaldo is better at everything except defending.

I'm sure many people would disagree but these are just my views. And I'd be happy to engage in a discussion because I'm very clear about my views between Ronaldo & Ballack.

Ballack is a central midfielder, he will be at the heart of everything that will happen in that game. Ronaldo is a winger, if the game is played primarily down the middle, there is a high chance that he will have very little to do. That baing said, Ballack will be crucial and Ronaldo will be opportnistic.

    Cue the Nani jokes...

i just feel like Cristiano hasn't proven himself as yet. He's proven he has a lot of talent. But i'm not comparing the latent ability or talent or positions that these two players play. What I am saying is that...can you see Germany going anywhere without Ballack? as opposed to Portugal without Ronaldo. Germany NEEDS Ballack. He is a proven leader and moreso all round contributor. He is way more likely to be the player who will carry his entire team through a difficult period. Those are the kind of players I like how much skill he has and his age are irrelevant when talking about that quality. We've all seen players burst onto the scene full of promise and oozing with talent that have all lost their hype. Enter Micheal Owen,Dwight Yorke and even Wayne Rooney to some extent.
In other words as the saying goes, form is temporary but class is permanent.
Ronaldo is in form but Ballack is sheer class...

As I said, Ronaldo is still a young player and is developing, why is age irrelvant? Wait till he's Ballack's age and you will see the difference yourself. Ballack may influence the game more for Germany than Ronaldo does for Portugal right now but Ballack is leadership material whereas Ronaldo is more of a DIY man. He needs to learn the art of team playing properly and no doubt he will be better than Ballack at any age in comparison. What I mean is that if you compare both players at 22, Ronaldo will come off as far better than Ballack. At 22, Ballack had only had 1 game for Germany and I can assure you he was nowhere near as involved as Ronaldo when he was 22.

If you want to make the comparison of Ronaldo & Ballack than you have to consider all the factors. Currently, I have to hand it to you that Ballack may influence Germany more than Ronaldo does Portugal. But next Euros, you will see clearly how much Ronaldo influnces the play for Portugal and Ballack may not be anywhere near that. He's 31 right now, he may not even play in the next Euros.

As a final statement for this current post, I'd like to say that you cannot possibly compare a successful established player like Ballack with a talented upcoming star like Ronaldo.

That would be like asking who helps their team more, Stuart Broad of England or Glenn McGrath of Australia (Cricket) or who would be a better overall player, Mark Selby or Ronnie O'Sullivan (Snooker). You just cannot make these kinds of comparisons without the factors that affect them which is what you want to do.

Overall Ronaldo is a far better player, I just can't see where Ballack compares to Ronaldo except for leadership, shot power, and headers, everything else belongs to Ronaldo, even though Ballack has had a more complete career, but while Ballack has long reached his peak, and is starting his decline, Ronaldo is still on the up, while a guy here did say Ronaldo is in form and Ballack is class, since when did a player stay in form for 2 years with minimal injuries, and a consistent goalscorer, I agree when it comes to the technical side, Ronaldo is still lacking, but his skill has unlocked so many different abilities, like long range shots, free kicks, headers, crossing.

Ronaldo was born with skill, he wasn't born with natural passing ability like Scholes, he wasn't born with the Heading ability of Miroslav Klose, he wasn't born with the crossing ability of Beckham, and he certainly wasn't born with the fee kicking ability of Juninho, but a player with his amount of skill, makes it much easier for him to develop these techniques, Ballack has a good passing range and good in the air but that is about it, I can't stand up and say Ballack is a world class player.

And this talk about Ronaldo being a winger which is why he is not in the game as much that is sh*t, Ronaldo is better, but most of Ronaldo's goals have come in the middle of the park, not the wings, and a TRUE winger with his ability would have made more than 6 assists last Season. Ronaldo isn't a winger anymore, Sir Alex just puts him there to fill out a space on the formation sheet, Ronaldo plays in a more free role, not to the extent of Cruijff, but he plays in a way that defenders can't man mark, he isn't a TRUE winger. But he can play there

But I'd prefer if Ballack shines and takes Germany to the semi-finals. Everyone's been impressed by Portugal's OK performances as if they are really high tempo attack minded team. Against a decent team like Germany I'd like to see how Pepe and Carvalho handle the heat

Germany wins. Ballack helped. But Germany played as a team. Portugal played like attacking individuals, but they never really broke down the defense enough

oh c'mom! you guys hate to give ballack his due credit! The guy is dynamic. Didn't you look at the two players throughout the game? Ballack does it all! He defended, he was on the flank totally tearing Boswinga, he put a brilliant ball through for Podolski to swing inside for the first AND he punished Portugal's sloppy defense. What did wunderkid do. Thank god Nuno Gomes was around to clean up the clear chance he spurned against Lehman and it was his terrible marking that allowed Klose the easy goal.
The bottom line is BALLACK IS SHEER CLASS. He did what Ronaldo couldn't which was take your easy chance and he led again from in front. So the wunderkid is going home and as I said before BALLACK WINS!!!!

This was taken directly from foxsports

Cristiano Ronaldo was caught watching in the 26th minute as Germany striker Miroslav Klose rose above him to head in the second goal from Bastian Schweinsteiger's free kick in the Germans' 3-2 win over Portugal in the European Championship quarterfinals.
The 23-year-old winger flailed his arms and then raised them. It wasn't clear if he was upset with his teammates or himself.
In what was billed as a battle between Ronaldo and his Premier League rival Michael Ballack, the Manchester United player was certainly the flashier(as i said - moments of brilliance) . But Portugal could certainly have used the Chelsea midfielder's two-way play. And his effectiveness.
Ballack tracked back the whole match, making a key block on a Portugal free kick directly after Klose's goal. He also played a part in giving Germany the lead, sending the ball down the left to Lukas Podolski, whose low cross was side-footed home from close range by Schweinsteiger.
Then, with Portugal owning possession early in the second half and looking ready to equalize, the 31-year-old Ballack rose above defender Paulo Ferreira to score from another free kick from Schweinsteiger.

Ronaldo marked up this time, but it didn't matter.

The victory must have been sweet for Ballack, whose Chelsea was edged by Man United for the Premier League and Champions League titles.
Scolari has confirmed that he will take over at Chelsea, where he knows that he will have one midfielder he can rely on for tireless defensive work.

    He'll have Ballack

I took this from the horse's mouth on foxsports.com so what do you have to say now...suckers BALLACK IS SHEER CLASS, way more reliable than ronaldo and I'd select him anyday anytime over a younger, more talented but certainly unreliable Cristiano
BY THE WAY...Isn't this Cristiano's 3rd major international tournament where once again he was WORTHLESS? So please people until he can lead Portugal somewhere stop calling him the Best in the world. He's NOT!

rEAD THE BOLD PRINT AGAIN...I said this 2 days ago before that game so get it thru your thick skull - age is irrelavant, talent is irrelavant - Ballack is a better player and much more invaluable to any team RIGHT NOW than Ronaldo is. So you waste-of-time analysts who can't see that Cristiano has only had what we call a super-season in England and is not yet a world class player on Ballack's level i.e a player who's proven he can perform for country & club (oh and make that any club he went to by the way)please stop making shit comparisons and accept that my boy Ballack is BETTER!

Wow, I thought you were good at discussion but it turns out you're just one of those that are completely biased. As I said earlier, Ballack may be more of an influence on his team than Ronaldo is on Portugal but I also said "Currently". Given Ballack may have had a better game, given that he may have been more invloved in the game, still doesn't prove the fact that he is better than Ronaldo.

You just want to ignore everything that may prove that Ronaldo maybe a better player than Ballack. So this will be the end of the discussion for me.

P.S: As one last comment, what success has Ballack had at Chelsea?

Ballack is better in free kicks, corner kicks, leadership, shot power, aim, headers, long shots.

Ronaldo is better in tricks and stamina.

    Done and done.
