BBC Sport reports Cardiff City midfielder and hot young prospect Aaron Ramsey has agreed to sign for Arsenal.

The deal was a major coup for the Gunners, who were also bidding with Premier and Champions League champions Manchester United for the star's signature.

Cardiff City had accepted bids from both clubs and it was then down to Ramsey to agree personal terms with one of the Premiership giants.

It is thought that Ramsey agreed to join Arsenal when the Gunners took the effort to fly the teenage star out to Switzerland for personal talks with manager Arsène Wenger.

Cardiff City also reported that the deal with Arsenal did not include a loan-back option, unlike United's, and that the Gunners had made the best cash offer for their player.

Ramsey, who has made just 22 appearance for the Championship side, is expected to have a medical at Arsenal's plush Hertfordshire training ground within the next 24 hours.

A Cardiff City statement read: "Cardiff City were informed on Friday morning that Aaron Ramsey's preferred destination this summer is the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal.

"We will now continue the dialogue with the Gunners with a view to Aaron's move being completed.

"The move, unlike other options, does not include a loan back period at Ninian Park for the 2008/09 season.

"We would like to wish Aaron every success in the top-flight."

Was Fergie at fault for United missing out on the boy? See: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/article4107860.ece

Anyway, good luck to the boy and I hope he does well at Arsenal. It's good to see that Wenger's last 2 high profile youth buys have both been British and at 17 years old Ramsey will have the opportunity like Theo Walcott to be brought up in Wenger's best playing traditions. If, as a Big Four club, you invest in young English/British talent there's a good chance they'll want to stay with you for most of their careers.

Every great club needs to have one or two outstanding players with an enduring country/local connection with the club (eg Carragher and Gerrard; Scholes and Giggs; Terry; Raul; Del Piero; Maldini; Totti; Puyol etc). It's vital to the spirit of the team.

Arsenal also have some fine English youngsters coming through the Academy/reserve teams. In 2 or 3 years time, we could see something which hasn't been seen that often in English football - a number of young British players with high technical ability playing in the Wenger style. This would not only be good for Arsenal, it would be good news for the England (and Welsh) teams.

I totally agree. With Steve McClaren relying on the 'old guard' of players, and screwing England over during Euro 2008 qualifiers, hopefully some of these youngsters can develop into players who can contribute for their country as well.

The one thing though that stops me from being optimistic, is that these are prospects. Meaning, not all great youth players carry over the Premiership. However, being at Arsenal, and playing under Wenger, they are in a prime position to develop into strong contributors for both club and country. *fingers crossed*

What? I didn't foul him, I just nudged him a bit

All part of this so called Arsenal Youth Policy

Would love to read their Mission Statement

Steal everybody elses, get them to play for Arsenal, then when they play Week in Week out without a homegrown player on the pitch but constantly bang on about their youth policy-

FOOKIN Nonsense - So what they got him, he's obviously a fookin retard if he's impressed wit a plane trip to wonderful Switzerland.

Choice A - Man Utd, winners of everything in the last 10 yrs, buckets of cash with an unprecedented track record of developing players from youths to full internationals, probably 10 full internationals from youth team to Senior in the last 15 yrs or so

Choice B -Arsenal, won a league or two, a cup or two in the last 15 yrs, havent a fucken penny, regularly prove they're not good enough.

Anyone name an International who's first team thru to senior team was Arsenal.

Well Done Ramsey U R STEVE SIDWELL waitin to happen

Case of sour grapes? I guessing he would have been the next Giggs if he had joined ManU but now he is a fucking retard eh?

Ramsey will hopefully (for his sake) blossom into a quality player.

If his decision is based on how much the manager has done for him, then he's not thinking about his career (Wenger won't base his decisions to play him on how much money he spent on the family to have them fly out to meet him). If his decision is based on playing time, then while I disagree with his choice it's a reasonable one. If his decision is based on which club is better, he's obviously wrong :)

DubMan - take off the idiot cap, please.

Well, the manager has done nothing except show commitment to the player. Honestly if the richest club in the world cannot arrange a meeting with the player & manager, it's their fault. Part of that reason maybe ManU's arrogance in thinking this is a done deal which showed when they announced the deal on the website.

If his decision is based on playing time, then while I disagree with his choice it's a reasonable one.

Well, if he went to ManU he would have probably gotten playing time in the CC. Probably it will be the same in Arsenal. Only difference is Arsenal usually progresses farther than ManU in the CC (Now remember, both teams use their second strings in this competition so don't start comparing which team is better). However, Arsenal is willing to give him play time in the EPL even though it might be at the end of the season.

If his decision is based on which club is better, he's obviously wrong :)

Well this is just another case of sour grapes. :)

Overall I wasn't looking forward to another kid, but lets hope he lives up to his hype.

If he choose Arsenal, fine with it...he can play with the 'world class' youngsters except for Gallas . If he choose United,he can play with 'Roo-nal-vez' trio(Rooney-Ronaldo-Tevez) and maybe he can get European glory that Arsenal hungry for...but he had choosen Arsenal,we can't change it...
