Peter Storrie, Portsmouth's chief executive, says that with the global financial crunch Pompey won't be making any more 'big signings' this summer.
This leaves them a bit short in center of the pitch although they do have adequate backup up front and Kaboul's presence will go a long way towards shoring up their defense.
Pompey's situation just goes to highlight that for teams that haven't 'been there' from the start (like Arsenal), buying your way to the top is the only way to go. Even Arsenal have had to mortgage their near future for long-term success (the Emirates stadium is a fantastic money-spinner) and you'll see Tottenham and Everton, amongst others, making moves for a new stadium to drive more people through the gates to fund wage bills and expensive transfers. Liverpool, for all their infighting, have been brought together by the need for more money and the stadium is now scheduled for 2010/2011.
Maybe it's time we, as fans, came to terms with football being as much about the money as about the playing talent?
