Former Milan defender Paolo Maldini has been given a special Champions League Achievement Award by UEFA.
The legendary Italian received the accolade at the Champions League draw in Monaco, presented to him by UEFA president Michel Platini for his contributions to the tournament over the years.
He spent his entire club career at A.C. Milan, acknowledged as one of the greatest defenders ever to play the game, Maldini played for 25 years until the age of almost 41. In his entire career he won seven Italian Serie A championships, one Coppa Italia, five Supercoppa Italiana, five UEFA Champions League Cups, five UEFA Super Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups.
Maldini started his international career in 1988 at age of nineteen. He participated in 1990’s world cup in which Italy lost in semi-final to Argentine. At the start of 1994 world cup he was named as the captain of the Italian national team. In this tournament Italy lost to Brazil in the final on penalties. In 1998 world cup lost to France. In 2000 Italy lost to France in the final of European championship. After elimination in 2002 world cup in round of sixteen. Maldini retired trophy less from international competition. He was the most capped player for Italy. He was the first defender ever to win the world best player of the year award.
