Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre is on the verge of joining Sunderland in a £750,000 deal.
The French left-back, who has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, is expected to put pen to paper on a £50,000-a-week deal with Roy Keane's side in the next few days.
Portsmouth and Manchester City were in the hunt for Silvestre who has spent nine years and made 249 appearances for United. Pompey were thought to be unable to afford Silvestre's wages, while the 31-year-old was not keen on playing for United's bitter rivals City.

Sunderland manager Roy Keane will finally end his search for more firepower today by signing Fulham's Northern Ireland marksman David Healy.
The 29-year old is heading for the Stadium of Light in a straight swap for midfielder Dickson Etuhu in a deal valued at around £2million.
Healy is currently with Nigel Worthington's Northern Ireland squad, preparing for tomorrow night's Hampden Park friendly with Scotland, but is expected to break off in the next 24 hours to have a medical on Wearside.
Keane has been desperate to add a cutting edge to his attack after losing Kenwynne Jones to a long-term injury and seeing his side struggle to make much impact up front against Liverpool on Saturday.
He has been strongly linked with a £9million move for Blackburn's South Africa frontrunner Benni McCarthy, who had to settle for a place on the bench at Everton, and could still follow up his initial interest after failing with an initial £8million offer last week.
