Real have really pulled out the cheque book this summer, and their summer signings have been real quality.

With Robben and Heinze presented to the Bernabeu faithful, they add to the other summer signings of Royston Drenthe, Christoph Metzelder, Pepe, Wesley Sneijder and Javier Saviola. They've also let go of Cassano for a year (loaned out to Sampdoria), sold Emerson to Milan and released Roberto Carlos.

Methinks the new Real are looking really good, Supercup defeat notwithstanding. They definitely look good to defend the title, and could even be said to be in with a serious shout for the Champions League. Along with Bayern, I think they've been the ones to reshape best over the summer.

So what do you guys make of this new Real Madrid? And what does Robben's arrival mean for Robinho? Or Metzelder's and Pepe's to Cannavaro? He has been pretty poor since the World Cup

Ehh...have you being paying no attention to Barcelona. Milito, Abidal, Yaya Toure and I think there was another...oh yeah Thierry Henry

They've been good too, but Madrid have bought half a squad or something like that...all who, barring saviola and to some extent drenthe, are automatic first-team players. that's scary!

With all that money spent Real lost to Hanover 3-0 so my guess they are the same or even not improving. Believe me Hanover is not that great Bayern beat them 3-0. Well that shows Gerrys know how to spend wisely.

Real did well and deservedly beat Atletico 2-1. They may be scrappy contenders again this year.

Bayern do look great this season. They've already thumped Bremen 4-0

With a new coach and everything, it's difficult to gel a team that quickly into playing together really well. They have plenty of talent however, and I'm sure they will start clicking after a few weeks.

more titles than chelsea, european or league. I'd say they are better than chelsea.

funny thing - dudek called madrid a bigger club than liverpool in a recent interview with the guardian...go figure :)

you should consider that chelsea is a "new" big boy in europe, while madrid has been around for years.

Question: is the new look Real Madrid a force to be reckoned with?

Answer: in Spain, perhaps, but not in Europe this year (yet again!). Every chance they'll change managers again in the summer. The Real hierarchy at times doesn't appear to know what its doing. They had a great manager in Vincente Del Bosque, and then dumped him for no good reason. Never really recovered the poise swagger and success they had under him.
