Once again in a pre-season match (this time in South Africa) Rooney was booked for a wild challenge and had to be substituted as his increasing frustration put him at risk of being sent off. His "Mr Angry" act is wearing thin. He is also extremely arrogant when substituted in big games, with petulant little displays to show his unhappiness. Something I've never seen the likes of Ryan Giggs ever do. Giggs is the consummate professional. Rooney could do worse than to watch Giggs and copy him.

EPL referees have been too lenient with Rooney, prone to giving him far more slack than is afforded to most players. The refs should crack down on him next season. It'll do him good. If he's got to be angry all the time to play well then he can't be much of a player. Big balls + bad temperament means that you'll keep letting yourself and your team-mates down. It's association football not a prize fight.

Next season is a big one for Rooney domestically and for England. It's time for him to get superfit. Compare his physique with Ronaldo or the much older Beckham, and its clear that Rooney lacks the physique of the superfit athlete. He's carrying too much weight. Last year, I saw a photograph of him after a game sitting in the dressing room, and I was amazed by the amount of flab he had around his midriff.

If he were fitter, he'd have less to become frustrated about. He'd make more of the fifty-fifty balls, be quicker around the pitch and probably find that clinical finishing touch which is sadly missing from his current repetoire.

At the moment, Rooney is a good player, a very good one. But he's a work-in-progress. To become great, he needs to do something about his temperament and his fitness.

Haha, Rooney should have grown up two seasons ago. I know players half his age who half more on-the-pitch class. He is 100% liability when players piss him off. I mean, just imagine instead of Zidane against Materazzi, put in Rooney, he'd probably be in jail right now. I mean,
QUESTION:whats the best way to bring him off form?
ANSWER: Insult him at every opportunity and clip his legs once or twice. Result: Booking and/or sending off or substitution

I mean, what is it with some of these younger United players. IE Ronaldo with his bloody unsportsmanlike "I'm the best, and if you don't kiss my ass, I'm going to cry and moan for 90 minutes." and of course Rooney. I just wanna see some of the older gents like Neville, Giggs and Scholes just punch them in the face and scream, "SNAP THE HELL OUT OF IT YOU STUPID GITS!!!!"

What? I didn't foul him, I just nudged him a bit

Pele has now waded into the Rooney debate criticising him for going backwards since Euro 2004, when he looked a super class player: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1036780/Rooney-comes-Pele-United-close-Berbatov.html

if Pele criticised me, I would work my ass off just to try and show him what I'm made of. ITS BLOODY PELE! But I bet Rooney doesn't have any REAL respect for his superiors or former greats for that matter...

The first time I ever saw Rooney, when he was at Everton, I said to myself, "He looks like just another bloody hooligan they put in the squad." He's built like one, but just players better.

Come on CGlend, Rooney is not just "another hooligan". Let's not go overboard. He has a short fuse on a football pitch because he so much wants to win. I understand that.

I think his underlying problem is his lack of tip-top fitness over the past 4 years - whether through fractures or just too much beer, cigarettes (and chips?). He should be gliding away from clod-hopping defenders (as he used to). He still has that great imagination which produces goals for others, but oftentimes his strikes on goal lack precision and cutting edge.

Rooney also needs to cool down, upstairs (i.e. in his head). Compare his finishes with say Torres or Ronaldo. There is a sureness, a crispness with their finishing. Rooney's shots miss the target too often or hit the keeper. As Capello has noted, if Rooney was cooler (in his head) in front of goal he'd have a much higher conversion rate of chances to goals.

Hopefully, for United and England, but most of all for Rooney himself, he will be able to clear these hurdles on the way to establishing himself as a true world great. It would be a great shame if he failed to fulfil his great potential in a red haze of anger and in a pot belly of flab.

You can't mention Joey Barton is the same breath as Cantona or Rooney. Now, if you want to talk about hooligans, Barton is your man. A nasty piece of work. A true thug.

just cuz the man looks a bit thicker than some other players doesn't mean he is unfit. how can you ignore his work ethic in a 90+ minute game? theres also highlights on youtube where he makes a defensive corner clearance and sprints the entire length of the pitch with the counterattack to receive the ball in the opposite box and score. it's unbelievable, and he sprints way harder on offense AND defense unlike other players like torres. From soccernet.com today:

"Italy coach Marcello Lippi says he wants his players to copy the selfless style of Manchester United's England forward Wayne Rooney.

'What counts more than the formation is the philosophy, the desire of great players to put themselves at the service of the team when the opposition have the ball. Like Rooney does at Manchester,' Lippi told Sunday's La Gazzetta dello Sport."

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=556321&sec=worldcup2010&cc=5901

yes, he needs to work on finishing, but i don't want him to cool down. his attitude has gotten much better since the world cup, and he is at the point now where that attitude is an asset to himself and the team. it allows him to work as hard as he does, and brings up the intensity of the entire team.

Tevez works just as hard as Rooney. Tevez is proof that you can play with fire in your belly but remain pretty cool upstairs. Steven Gerrard is similar. Rooney should try and do the same. SAF says that they are working on it. They need to.

Rooney seems stocky to me. Not exactly unfit. Kind of like Tevez. Rooney always looks as if he will beat the crap out of the next guy. Maybe balding is causing emotional problems?? :?

He boxed at a pretty good level all through his teens. And I think he has an uncle who was a boxer. The Rooneys are renowned locally for being hard men. I think Wayne does find it frustrating that he can't go over and knock 7 bells out of opponents who irritate him. Now, you don't have to do much to be the subject of Wayne's ire. Sometimes wearing a different coloured shirt and being within 5 metres of him is enough.

It's hilarious watching United on MUTV and Paddy Crerand's commentary. Everytime Rooney loses the ball and starts chasing back, Paddy Crerand comes out with the stock words: "Steady Wayne, steady...Don't do anything silly". Quite often Rooney does do something silly, commits a foul, sometimes ends up with a booking and then remonstrates with the ref.

But credit where credit's due. He doesn't get sent off as much as he used to.

He doesn't get sent off as much because I'm sure SAF told him to knock it off. He has so much potential to be really good, but put him around crafty defenders who jibe him to piss him off and commit fouls and get angry, and he's finished. I dunno, maybe its just me, but any player who has that kind of temper is more a liability if I were running a team.

Rooney has matured more since he joined ManUtd. There have been less sending offs, less bad tackles and more good work rate, assists. Does any of you above criticizing Rooney know he had Manchester United's most assists of the season with 14. And he's a striker. If Ronaldo's been given a free role, what can he do about it ??? Rooney likes to drop deep, and it is affective. If SAF doesnt have a problem with it, and Rooney continues his work rate, dedication and determination, I dont think anyone else should have a problem too. This topic started with u guys saying Rooney's sorta fat, and all the criticizm above is, obviously, coming from ManUtd-Haters. SAF said a few months back that if he has to change Wazza's position completely for the good of the team, he will do it.

I'm not criticizing his fitness, I just don't really like Rooney, and don't say people are Man U haters just because your a Manchester supporter. Look at Wayne Rooney unbiased and then make an argument for or against.

rooneys position is perfect.most of the attacking play goes through him.think about it,when he wanst playing, united werent half as effective going forward (with the west ham game an exception).he is vital to united.as for his fitness i think its just his muscle that makes him look overweight.he does have a fierce temper that is beneficial because he will run for the whole match to get the win but he does lose his temeper too often.but im sure he has the sense to listen to pele and hopefully we will see the world class wayne rooney at the start of the league

True but aren't you biased towards not liking Rooney too? :?

I agree with Ahmed Shah, he has matured so much since the World Cup. And if you watched all the matches where he plays, you'd see that he works harder than anyone else on the pitch because he likes to play football. Almost like it is his passion but he still needs to improve his temperament although it is improving year on year.

Maybe balding is causing emotional problems?? :?

And I laughed so hard when I first read that.

I like Rooney, I support United and I would like him to excel for both United and England. But I do genuinely think Rooney could do better on the "superfitness" front (like Ronaldo) and with his temperament (like Tevez or Gerrard - ie. fire + discipline). Sometimes you need to criticise those you like.

My affection for United is not unconditional; i.e. I won't turn a blind eye to the misbehaviour of United players in some rather tired expression of undying love for everyone who happens to pull on a red shirt. On the behaviour front, the same yardstick should be applied to Wayne Rooney as to anyone else. I want to see Rooney do well. SAF has not told him to be more disciplined because he is a United-hater. No, it is because he is a United-lover, like me.

Wayne Rooney is like a kid scoring 7 out of 10 in school tests when he is capable of getting 9s. And he's getting 7s because he is too easily distracted. Wayne "can do better". I hope he does.

i like him how he is...... if he loses any of his drive than he is not the same player..... it is like Evra said before the cl semi second leg vs. barca....... it was something along the lines of i refuse to go into a tackle any lighter than i ussually do(to avoid a 1 game succesion for succesive yellows) because that is not the way i play

weveryone just lay off rooney. you can't change who a person is. The way rooney acts and plays the game is how he got to where he is. I'm a hockey player.. and the only way for me to preform is to get aggressive because i thrive off momentum. Yes rooney might want to work on his tempers with the refs.. but the way he plays the game is fine and like fosterfirst said if anyone changes rooney.. he won't perform as well as usual.

    rooney's a punk!!! he'll never win a pl scoring title...never.....too lazy

you want work rate - see dirk kuyt, see drogba, see essien...that's work rate...not rooney...another over-rated english bloke.

everytime an english kid scores one good goal ppl go crazy and start talking shit about him being the next great english hoe. they did it with owen and they did it with rooney...sorry they're good but not up in the Eto'sphere or the Drogba-sphere.

    So just stop it please.
