Today I have to hold my hand up and say that, having been vociferously disrespectful of Darren Fletcher for years, I was wrong. I am sorry! At the beginning of this season I said that, after his seven seasons as a great 'trier,' it was time for his departure. The last few weeks, however, have shown a new sense of quality and relentless drive in his game. The two headed goals he scored today made up for the utter lack of passion and urgency in Berbatov's game. I was reminded of Keane's headed goal in the ECC semi-final away to Juventus when we were 2-0 down. No wonder Rio grabbed his pot-addled head after his cartoon-character 'pass' went astray to Bellamy. Clearly Giggs, Rooney and Fletcher are now the de facto leaders of our team. Time for Rio to step aside.

Being Scottish and a Man Utd fan I find Darren Fletcher the most infuriating player ever. Over last season and the start of this season he has transformed his game from bit-part player to almost 1st name on the team sheet. For Manchester Utd his drive and determination and energy make him a managers dream for a centre midfielder. This obviously is transpired to the national team where he should be out national beacon who should be running our team, unfortunately this is not the case, he rarely plays well for scotland and i cant understand why. His game for Man U is so simple, nothing fancy and he performs this task to a high standard, at scotland he just does not show the same drive and energy, he only had 1 decent game in the qualifying campaign. Admittedly he probably feels he needs to do more for scotland as there is no Giggs, Scholes or Rooney to add the finese he has at Man U.
But i wish sometime i will see the Darren Fletcher of Man U turn up for scotland on a regular basis as the Man U fletcher has the ability to be head and shoulders scotlands best player!! -

He doesn't do as well for Scotland because Scotland don't have the same players as United and he must be specially suited to the united system or something

Horses for courses, Gazza. Fletcher's no Jim Baxter or Jimmy Johnstone, but, like, who is? This whole generation is totally mediocre.

Dont get me wrong, I totally understand Fletch has the players around him at Utd where everyone raises each others game but in a team like Scotland, you'd expect him to the stand out player. I'm not sure if its this pressure that gets to him and he tries too much for national team, it says a lot for our national team when our best national players are McFadden and Hutton who dont play well at club level. Yet I'm not sure I can complain too much, not even the Utd Fletch would do scotlands chances any good, we just simply dont have the players currently, but as a Utd player I love fletch and I'm delighted he is being rewarded with all his graft over the last couple years and of course being Scottish its great to see him playing in one of the biggest teams in europe.

The one who bamboozles me is Scott Brown. Sometimes he's absolutely a dynamo for Celtic, but he just looks sad out there for Scotland. Graham Alexander, Shaun Maloney, Brown and Fletcher look like they could form a decent central midfield on paper, go figure....

Brown played excellently against Macedonia and scored the first goal, I think its just inconsistency with all these players and a rubbish manager

Souness recently said he thinks Fletcher will become United's most important player over the next seven years by becoming their captain and carrying on the fergie tradition post SAF retirement. The only midfielder playing better than him is Giggs, and he has to be used sparingly because of his age.
It's a highly debatable subject, but if he hadn't been sent off against Arsenal for a fine tackle in last seasons European Semi, he could have really got stuck into Barca and offered us something we dearly missed in that final.
