Edwin van der Sar equalled Peter Schmeichel’s 129 international caps when he came out of retirement to face Iceland on Saturday. It’s a feat that reminds United’s goalkeeping coach Eric Steele that replacing the Dutchman will be as difficult a task as it was trying to find the great Dane’s successor.

Van der Sar, who turns 38 at the end of this month, has a contract that runs until next summer. He plans to decide on his future beyond that date by the turn of the year.

The Dutchman has been a steadying influence on United since arriving from Fulham in 2005. Steele hopes Edwin can carry on heading up the Reds’ last line of defence, but says the challenge has been set for the likes of Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak.

"Edwin has gone public with the message that this is his last year, but with a view to looking at it and reviewing the position at Christmas. So we have to be prepared for if and when that happens," said Steele.

"Edwin is a very, very experienced goalkeeper. He has been one of the finest in the world in terms of the sweeper-keeper role that this club needs.”

Steele worked with Schmeichel during his time as a coach at Villa Park, and he says the Dane’s rating as most people's best-ever goalkeeper is fully justified.

“It was tough getting someone in to fill Schmeichel's boots, and Edwin's boots are going to be big to fill,” he told the Manchester Evening News. “He will now be remembered for the famous save in the shoot-out in the Champions League final but I think it had been noted by the game’s purists that he was one of the finest in terms of playing out from the back.

“He has been, and still is, one of the best. It’s a joy having viewed him from a distance to now work with him. He has raised the bar. But when the time comes that Sir Alex says, ‘who is going to replace Edwin?' I have to have an answer and reasons for the answer.

"My job is to give the manager as many options as I can,” he added. “That is what we are trying to do. We have to get all the goalkeepers fit and competing and throw the gauntlet down to Tomasz Kuszczak and Ben Foster and ask, ‘who is going to become our no.1.

"This is the time for Tomasz and Ben. This is what they were brought here for. They are both back from injury. Both are fully fit now to accept the challenge and Edwin knows it is there."

I was convinced it would be Foster, but he can't seem to stay healthy. Looks like it will be Kuszczak for at least a year. He recently signed a new deal, so it looks like he'll be the starter next season while Foster will deputize. Not a good situation for Man Utd., though. Kuszczak has played well as a sub, but I'm not sold on him as a starter. Hopefully, it won't be like when Man Utd. had Howard (who I liked) and Carroll and Ferguson kept going back and forth between the two and ended up destroying both of their confidences.

Who knows? Maybe it will be someone from another Premiership squad (Van der Sar came from Fulham, after all), like Shay Given, Jääskeläinen, or Kirkland. Or it could be someone from outside the Premiership like Akinfeev from Russia. It probably won't be Buffon, Casillas, or Dida, though. And it certainly won't be Kasper Schmeichel.

Howard was and still is amazing. I would be willing to bet that Ferguson will go for Gordon.

    Cue the Nani jokes...

Fergie will give his young keepers a chance but I think his mind is made up that Kuszczak will be second-choice at best and good for cups and minor home league games. So Foster will get a shot but beyond that we're looking at either an outstanding young keeper (akinfeev, ustari, the usual suspects) or age and experience while he looks for that young'un to take over the #1 spot for 10 years.

I think Gordon has talent, but there have been times when he's looked decidely mediocre. Plus, I'm sure Sunderland would want to sell him for more than they bought him, which would mean that Man Utd. would have to shell out in excess of 9 million for him. Sure, that's chump change to them, but they can get better options for less money.

Just don't get Scott Carson. I'll cry if that happens.

Howard is good, see he is in Everton, just that at times his defence is letting him down, alot.

I wouldnt mind Carson, but u cant keep two potential England No1 in the same club, like what Pool had with Kirkland and Carson.

It is sensible that Ferguson will go for Gordon. I would say try getting Foster as a first choice, like play him as many games as possible. if during the course of the season, Foster gets injured cover him with Kuszczak. that will be terrible season i guess, and in that one season if Foster dont make it, time for a change and get Gordon, exchange him with Foster, sometime when a Keeper moves on, he sometime will get less injuries, like Kirkland.

    René Adler anyone?

Akinfeev is the best available goalkeeper at the moment. Kameni is similar to PIG - good shot-stopper but bad at almost everything else and has James-esque eccentricies.

Ferguson will need to make a decision about Foster soon. He has all the natural tools but seems so injury-prone at such a young age that it does not bode well for the futurel. Kucszak is tough and good in the air; unfortunately. he gets caught out of position a lot and has a tendency to punch too many balls he ought to gather. René Adler, Sergio Asenjo and Guillermo Ochoa are all first-rate, but will be expensive.

I STILL MISS NOBBY & BOBBY!!!

1)Foster - its a long time since United had a England No1 in their ranks.
    2)Kuszczak
3)Carson - Foster will then have to leave.
4)Gordon - Scottish guy, but Keano is build a great squad, will he sell?
5)Adler - Wait Fergie can handle a German fella, can he?
6)Mandanda - Looks promising, but French GK again?
7)Stekelenburg - If EvdS stays to help out, then he can train him.
8)Ochoa - Mexican guy, whose move across the atlantic has been long overdue, he is still in a local club? wtf

Why is everyone so high on Scott Carson? Did we forget about his shaky performances for Villa last season, to say nothing of the Croatia match? I'd bring Howard back before I signed Carson.

Convictor you is de victor. Howard, Carroll and Carson all have a history of doing the Calamity James in big games. So who do you like? And Hamburg, since when did the Gaffer have issues with the Germans or the Argies like so many Brits? One of our reserve keepers is a big Kraut geezer. I think Ballack rejected us for Chelsea's cash. You can accuse Ferguson of many things, but not xenophobia. Who do you like better, Neuer or Adler? It's Adler for me.

    Bobotonto,

I wouldn't sign any of them. I used Howard's name to make a point about Carson (although I think Howard has improved tremendously at Everton and that Ferguson really killed his confidence by going back and forth between him and Carroll).

I agree that nationality doesn't matter. The guy could be from Mars. As long as he stops shots and plays well, then I'm sure Ferguson will find a way to get along with him.
