After a poor showing in the Community Shield and subsequently pulling out of England's squad for the game with Holland, it looks to be a new season yet same old story for Ben Foster. There's no doubting the boy has talent, but his unreliable fitness levels at a club renowned for having a great medical centre are becoming very frustrating.

This has apparently left Fergie eyeing up Manuel Neuer to become a VDS successor as confidence in Ben begins to wane. Although I can't see the transfer happening this summer, if Foster fails to uphold a consistent run of any sort I think it'll be time for Sir Alex to dip into his Ronaldo funds.

u cant judge him on just one game before the season even begins, u can say Foster is as good as the next guy but was it him or Kuszczak who saved those penalties in the final against Tottenham last season... he's a good second choice but i cant c him as a long term successor 2 VDS

We don't need another ageing performer after VDS we need longevity. It's not his performance that frustrates me the most it's the constant injuries. At the end of last season I was convinced he would become a great goalie for us, and then he has to pull out of two England squads because of operations or niggling injuries. I've never known a goalkeeper to get injured so much, so in that respect I can't ever see him being able to complete a long stretch of clean sheets purely because he won't be in the team/

Still... he CANNOT deal with crosses, in that Chelsea game the first Chelsea goal would have been prevented by Vande Sar and it has happened a few times, last season against Sunderland etc etc

Man Utd keeping tabs on German 'keeper Neuer

Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on Schalke stopper Manuel Neuer, with a view to wrapping up a £5m deal before Bayern Munich increase their bid.

Bayern have long been linked with Neuer who is one of the stand-out young goalkeepers in world football and was hugely impressive in the Under-21 European Championship earlier this summer, but Fergie is also keen to bring in the ''new Peter Schmeichel."

The 23-year-old has come through the ranks at Schalke where he made his debut during the 2006-2007 season and, despite some high-profile mistakes, has sealed his first-team place at the German side over the past three years.

New Schalke boss Felix Magath has admitted that he is aware of mounting interest in the young shot-stopper, although would not talk about any potential transfer.

"I have heard Manchester United would be interested in signing Manuel Neuer," he told Die Welt.

"But for as long as I don't receive a concrete approach, I will not make any statement about this."

    Magath: United are watching Neuer

Schalke boss Felix Magath claims Manchester United are tracking his highly-rated goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who could cost around £5million.

The 23-year-old is regarded as one of Europe's hottest prospects, and has already broken into the senior Germany side.

He has been part of the first-team set-up at Schalke for the past three years and is now firmly established as the club's number one.

A number of impressive showings during his time at the Veltins Arena have seen him draw admiring glances from other clubs, with United reportedly the latest to check on his progress.

Magath is keen to avoid ant talk of a possible transfer for now, but admits he is aware of mounting interest in the young goalkeeper.

"I have heard Manchester United would be interested in signing Manuel Neuer," he told Die Welt.

"But for as long as I don't receive a concrete approach, I will not make any statement about this."

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are also believed to be keen on Neuer, but United are said to be willing to pay a higher fee in order to land the youngster.

I would of thought it would reach into the double figures of millions. He's really athletic and oozes confidence, something that Foster hasn't been reeking of recently. Neuer's s safe bet to become a world class keeper, whereas with Foster there's still an uncertainty hanging in the air. If he doesn't show some solid form by January, then we should swoop for Neuer.

Foster was a nervous wreck against a geriatric Chelsea. I really like his two-footed kicking ability. On his good days, he looks strong, but he's obviously just not mentally tough enough to be a week in/week out United player. Neuer is bloody good, although we could have bought an even better keeper in Sergio Asenjo for a lot less than it's going to cost to get him from Schalke. I'm sure Magath and Schalke's board would rather sell to United than Bayern, but they'll be looking for up to 20M of that Ronaldo dosh.

Neuer IS good, I would think that Schalke wouldn't sell for less than 13 mil maybe, but I might be wrong.

In the meantime, though, they should focus on getting quality replacement.

To be fair I always thought Foster was overrated but only in respect to the fact that everyone has been saying he should be in the England number one now that he is fit which to me was ridiculous as he doesn't play constantly and James, Robinson, Green and Kirkland do. But in saying that I don't see why after just one poor game he's now written off completely. Give the guy a chance, judge him after he's had that 5 or 6 games when deputising for Van Der Sar.

Yeah, and that's an understatement. That save from Benitez was top-class, I was expecting the net to bulge, I admit.

That save was top class, but did you notice how many of those casual kicks Foster made which went to the opposition? Four times. Pretty dense. Now keep telling me. lads. Berbatov is just great. £32M and he flicks and dishes just great!? He will, eventually, score. You promise.

Berbatov had his moments and yes he will score which will hopefully result in many many more. And what a chance Michael Owen missed right at the end !! Surely that should have been bread and butter for him...

He did put in a good shift today to be fair to the lad. It was late in the game and he hadn't much to do all day yet he kept his instincts sharp. He has to build on this performance and become more consistent before he the opinions of him begin to improve.

Benitez is an Ecuadorian. I don't know much about him but I know Brum got him on loan for a year with a view to signing him for 9 mill at the end of the year. That was the first time I saw him and he made more of an impact against the defenders than Cameron Jerome. Should of started with him up front too, going 4-5-1 against United at their place very rarely works out.

Cristiano Benitez is one worth keeping an eye on. Big and quick and I'll bet he's mates with Valencia. They'll all be sniffing around him at the end of the season as the dummy Brummies are being measured for their coffin.

Some of Foster's kicks were atrocious. Those kind of chickens come back to squawk!

It's not so much the kicks themselves as his footwork fundamentals. That's stuff they drill into you in primary school, Bob.

James, Robinson, Green should be the ones going to South Africa at the mo. Maybe I will keep Carson as a backup if either had a terrible season.

I think Robinson should be allowed a starting place again, what he did against Croatia is behind him now and he should be looking to regain the starting spot.
