Here's an easy solution for the FA:

Force Barton to accept a contract renegotiation that pegs his salary back by 50% and reduces all *bonuses* by the same amount.
If Barton does not comply, Newcastle should get special permission to terminate Barton's contract without any liability - and if this happens, Barton cannot play for any other football club for the next 2 years.

Right now Newcastle are holding on to Barton so that they can eventually recoup some of the transfer fee they've paid for him (he was injured quite a bit last season). This helps them reduce the wage, gets Barton to behave (or gets him out of football) and more importantly for the moralists, 'punishes' the offender, right where it hurts most.

I don't understand. How does the FA benefit from the madman's destruction?

    Cue the Nani jokes...

Maybe they were just waiting for his criminal case to get settled, but it is questionable timing, for sure.

Frankly, Newcastle should cut ties with him, but hey, good on them for trying to give the guy a lifeline, even if he has acted like a thankless little brat.

There's an interesting dichotomy represented here. There's absolutely no doubt that Joey Barton is an absolute nutter. He's a sociopath further hindered by issues involving race and alcoholism. I have absolutely no doubt that, once his football career is over, little Joey will end up doing a far longer tour of the British penitentiary system. Nevertheless, are Newcastle United responsible for a crime he committed while playing for another club? Ethics are tricky, but profits the bottom line. Manchester City are the ones who bent over backwards, repeatedly forgiving his transgressions and, now that Sam Allardyce is just one more fired manager, Barton's career is in limbo. Should Newcastle finally decide to follow City's example and cut bait, it will still be worthwhile for some desperate club (say Hull Ciity) to give him a job. How much is too much?

I STILL MISS NOBBY & BOBBY!!!

Too much is when he punches someone's lights out on the field and then goes apeshit on the crowd when they turn on him.

At some point, the guy needs to learn that he can't get away with everything. Unfortunately, his mindset seems to be helped by the fact that he has been let off rather easily for the numerous run-ins with teammates and the law that he's had.

He's got the chance to really have a career many of us just dream about, and he's crapping it all away just because he can't behave. I feel sorry for him, but then again I don't.
