So with the Euro 2008 group stages ending today with the last matches in Group D, we've seen some great performances and some shoddy ones. If you had to make a starting 11 with the players you think preformed the best at Euros so far (Not based on the rep, but what the've done in the tournament), who would you pick...

    Mine would be
    4-4-2
GK- Edwin Van Der Sar (Neth)
Defenders- Philip Lahm (Ger), Pepe (Port), Sergio Ramos (Spa) and Khalid Boulahrouz (Neth)
Mids- Luka Modric (Cro), Wesley Sneijder (Neth), Arda Turan (Tur), Michael Ballack(Ger)
Fowards- David Villa (Spa), Lukas Podolski (Ger)

Subs- Nihat Kahveci (Tur), Zlatan Ibrahimović (Swe), Andrea Pirlo (Ita), Hakan Yakin (Swi), Deco (Port)

If you want, also do Group Stages all-flop team as well

What? I didn't foul him, I just nudged him a bit

Petter Hansson was a good choice on defense. We'll see how he does today

Engelaar might have been the best Dutch player in our game against Italy.

Ronaldo is better than everybody on his team...it's just that we don't see it because we're accustomed to him being great...I don't like him.

And Cech is my favorite goalie (note my name). Chelsea is an awesome team, and without him and with that Italian, they wouldn't do crap. So I expected to see him performing well, but he didn't...did you see the match against Turkey? The Czechs would've won.

Oh, and Andrei, why do you put Metzelder and Grosso on your team? THEY didn't do anything.

Metzelder did not do anything and that is because he is a defender, the amount of amazing block he and Mertesaker made awed me.

Grosso was the heart and sould of the Italian team against the: Dutch after he came on as a substitute, Romaninans where he was the only one to play something and French when he had an average game.

BTW, I thought Deco was much better than Ronaldo in both matches in which they played...

I was going to say, Deco was probably better, but...

I also do watch defenders and I realize their importance. Per Mertesacker is the seconnd best in the world in my opinion, and he happened to impress. Metzelder made a couple errors, though.

Andrei, Grosso is ok, but Metzelder? He and Mertsaker and the lack of Klose and Gomez up front lost the match against Croatia for them. Of all the teams in the competition, you couldn't find a single defender who played better? No Puyol or Sergio Ramos? No Croatian defenders like Corluka? Hell, I would argue Patrice Evra played better than Metzelder. Especially, to point out a particularly terrible job, the lack of marking in the center during the Croatians second goal in which there were 2 men unmarked on the back post? That is a particularly poor mistake considering this is an international football match.

I will come clean and say he played decent against Austria, but ITS AUSTRIA. And, to say he was better than all other defenders in the competition is a little far fetched.

Are you still going to argue with me about Metzelder after that quarter final (I realize this is a group-stage team, but still...)?

I think that to say Mertesaker is the second best defender in the world is really far fetched, but Metzelder is really good. I would have said wither Puyol or Ramos, but they did not play especially well...

Metzelder is my choice and I stand by him even though I might be wrong.

you're right andrei that's why he's in my defense. A technically sound defender, reads game well, tackles well and is good on the ground as well as in the air

That's okay, Andrei. I don't stand by him, though. Do you still want to argue about Engelaar now that Ballackfan included him?

look, he's an international class defender, no doubts, but I was a defender for a long time before I worked my way into an attacking role as I got older, and he's often out of position and quite slow. The Postiga goal he was just standing there. He's Good in the air sure, but he makes mistakes all over the place. I can see Germany get to the final, but if they go up against the Netherlands and a tall attacker like Ruud, he's done.
