It wasn't a win that conveyed an imperialistic English performance, more an imploding Croatian one that left England with the simple task of harrying and pressing the ball when they were in possession and making decent runs around their static defenders when we had it.

Capello's ability to iron out England's faults were also on display, as the right hand side proved to be the weakest part of the team against Slovenia whereas it became the most productive this evening, notably through the inclusion of Man of the Match Aaron Lennon ahead of Wright-Phillips.

With Lampard and Gerrard grabbing two goals apiece, persistent fears that they cannot play in the same side as each other have also began to evaporate, leaving our only real problem at Emile Heskey's misfiring feet.

Hammering Croatia, who are 9th in the FIFA world rankings, home and away and subsequently wining all 8 of the group games so far, can England begin to assess themselves as genuine contenders for next years World Cup?

the inablility to keep a clean sheet has to be a worry.other than that it looks like england SHOULD do well, although it has to be seen whether they can handle the pressure

We've apparently penned a friendly with Brazil sometime next year, which should be the real acid test for the World Cup and a chance to make amends for the horrible start we had against the Netherlands

Lampard was superb, surely the MOTM for me, and that is coming from a United fan. He tested the defence time and again. From the FK to the header and chip to set up the 4th goal.

agree with Rishard, Lennon is much better than SWP, otherwise Walcott could be better. I guess we might have a tough time over the weekend against Spurs.

However, I think Gerrard might be weak on the left of midfield against more organised opponents like Spain or Italy.

The same problems will still show up against the likes of Spain, Brazil and Italy. Lennon and Walcott lack intelligence. Joe Cole is far superior to Stevie G on the left. Playing Stevie G behind Rooney, instead of putting him next to Heskey or Defoe is problematic. These are, however, problems most coaches would love to have. Mourinho's rejection of Johnson was not a mistake. The lad loses his concentration too easily. A cautious Capello will surely prefer Wes Brown in the latter stages of the tournament.

agreed bobo, Barry might get out muscled in midfield against the likes of Ballack or Kaka. Just need to take alook at his combat against the top 4 midfield.

As for Johnson (and Cole), yes he gets caught out easily, but most top side have offensive-mind fullbacks and that is when a strong DM is need, which in my earlier point says Barry need to be strong in.

Let not forget the keeper between the sticks, not the best, but definately need more than just an average keeper in terms of shot stopping and 1 on 1s.

If Rooney is injured Gerrard would play off Heskey? or it'll be Carlton Cole/Heskey/Crouch and Defoe up front there's loads of options. I think England need Ferdinand fit and sharp, Hargo would be good for them as a DM and Wes Brown would be a more sensible and defensive RB for them.

Joe Cole is far superior in that position, but if offered one of the two players without knowledge of where they would play you'd have to pick Gerrard every time just because he can offer more. All of our attacking play against Slovenia was focused down the left hand side with Rooney and Stevie G linking up well again, but his ability in the defensive half of the pitch outclasses Joe Cole by miles.

Another feature of our play against Croatia was the commitment, after Lennon lost the ball after a dribble or Terry surged forward, they sprinted not jogged back to position to win possession or hold the structure of the formation in place. These qualities are also naturally implemented in Gerrard, which is why he is more important for England when it comes to team dynamics.

With Lampard playing in a much deeper position, almost Pirlo-like, and still getting forward it meant Barry was never swamped by blue shirts and if consequently beaten, there was still another man to help clear things up.

Agree with Bobo on Johnson he still needs to feel more comfortable with his defending when under pressure. As for Rooney getting injured, all we can do is pray and hope we can still perform without him. There's certainly no like for like replacement.

Got to have Gareth Barry out there. I agree. Although, there's a chance Own Hargreaves will be fit by then. Honestly, I'm more concerned about Barry, Ferdinand or Terry being injured than Rooney. I actually think Carlton Cole and Jermain Defoe make a fine set of second strikers. I'll be really interested to see what happens if England play Brazil because they have a huge weakness at left back (his name escapes me) which the Yanks exploited. Joe Cole or Ashley Young would surely get the call.

Are you talking about Andre Santos? Besides, Dani Alves plays on the left sometimes, with Maicon on the right.

Milner has my vote for the left midfield slot. but who should be dropped? Common sense will say Heskey, as he isnt very good. but Rooney cannot play alone, Barry need to shield the defence and cover for the full-backs. So, erm, drop Gerrard?

In no way is Upson or Lescott a replacement for Ferdy or Terry.

Richards or Luke Young for RB.

I still think it's got to be Joe Cole on the left because he SCORES GOALS and plays above himself for England. Santos is dreadful. Putting Alves at left back will make things very very interesting. If Hargreaves is fit, he would do a far better jon at right back than Johnson, Richards or Young. Brown is injury-prone, too, but he's far superior as a sub at RB/CB than Lescott, Upson or Richards.

Well if you are looking at the RB slot, you have consider the LB spot as well. Cole is not going to be help an out of position Gerrard. Barry can cover ground for him, but not for long when Barry is drawn out often and on both sides.

Oh yes, the next few "practice" games, Capello better find a solid GK. Hart, James or Green.

Cant wait for the Spuds game, Defoe or Rooney? Lennon vs Evra. Carrick and Berba back home.

It boils down to personal choice at the end of the day and I'd prefer an England team with the inclusion of Gerrard and Joe Cole is the most feasable player to be cut, plus Gerrards goal per game ratio is pretty similar to Cole's, 10 in 53 for Joe Cole and 16 in 76 for Gerrard.

Ashley Cole has nailed the LB spot, Bridge is not a worthy replacement and if Hargreaves played he'll be sure to sweep up a few more balls toward the end of the 90 minutes than Barry. Otherwise it's a weakness that can be exposed, but I'd target the RB spot first if I were the opponent.

Brown or Greavo for RB then, Brown or Rio for CB? next to Terry, you're right about Cole Rishard, he has LB spot in the bag. I've not seen much of Milner on the left and didn't witness his display against Holland though, is he really that good? and I doubt Capello will leave Heskey out, I think if it aint broke don't fix it, he sets up plenty of goals for midfielders and Rooney so he is doing his job. Its just the leakey defence that needs sorting out really.

He did well but hasn't put in a performance on the level of Lennon or Walcott's displays against Croatia, I've heard Capello say he thinks Milner has a big future at International level though. One to watch over the next few games.

Agree completely with if it aint broke then don't fix it, but if we're against quality opposition and the only chance falls to Heskey and he repeats what he did on Wednesday, we will pay for it. Another tactic that revolves around that sort of plot can be used with Carlton Cole as he's massive yet has more ability in front of goal.

Just because England has the reputation of not having flair players and being over-cautious doesn't mean that we need to stick to that. Johnson is far superior to Wes Brown at right back and if he had a right midfielder in front of him who could also defend (Gerrard perhaps), not Wright-Phillips or Lennon, then the right side would be more solid. Like the idea of Joe Cole on the left, although if Milner gives some more solid performances he should be given the nod. When Hargreaves is back he should be played instead of Barry.

Lets wait and see what sort of season Joe Cole has before we begin shifting the team to accommodate him when it's already in pretty good shape as it is. Joe's more of a surprise substitute rather than first eleven if Lennon can carry his current form into a good level of consistency or Walcott has a consistent year himself.

I would rather put Beckham as a surprise sub to change games around. Lennon and Walcott is too similar and Beckham offers pin-point delivery which the Cole, Lennon and Walcott do not have.

However since Lennon and Walcott is similar, chances are SWP will get the nod over Walcott as he is playing regularly.

the problem with the left wing is that Milner and Downing is playing at the same club as with Ashley Young and it is quite hard to see all 3 Englishmen playing at once. Downing > Milner > Young

Only if SWP improves his performances after his horrible display against Slovenia. He may as well not have been on the pitch, which is probably why Johnson himself got so highlighted for his defensive frailties against them and not so much when playing Croatia. Capello dropped him from the whole squad when we played on Wed which shows you how much he valued his input. My four would be Cole, Lennon, Walcott and Beckham to be on the plane to SA, with Gerrard operating as an alternative or definite on the left hand side.

I remember Beckham being used as a central mid once by Capello, to make those pinpoint passes and keep possession, has any more been made of that?

Jenas, Carrick, Walcott, Beckham. And maybe Young or Milner on the sidelines if any of them gets injured or suffer a loss of form.

Beckham gets knackered after 30 minutes or so. For me, whether he's in the middle or on the wing, you bring him on late.
