Before the start of the season, and throughout the season a majority of United supporters have felt that United are a centre forward or two light up front. Anelka was available, United didn't bid for him. United have lost 5 times this season; on each occasion Rooney has not been playing. It's not only the imagination and movement that Rooney brings to the team, but he is currently the only fit centre forward in the entire first team squad. To be potent United need to have a centre forward playing; it's essential to their style. United have been become overly reliant on Ronaldo from the wing producing something extraordinary game after game. In the game against City, United did not have a single centre forward available, in the team or on the bench, not one. That was the major difficulty for the team.

The United team against Manchester City was very poor. With this sort of performance, this United team sadly are just not good enough to win the Champions League; and will not win the League. Compare the Arsenal performance against City when they imperiously swept them aside, to United's toothless, pallid performance just a week later. It was very, very disappointing for a team so highly trumpeted. I blame the management team. They need centre forwards. The boy Manucho looked very good playing for Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations. But what do United do? They send him off on loan to Panathinikos for the rest of the season, and decide instead to bring the very young Danny Welbeck into the first team squad. Why?

United cannot afford to pin their chances on Ronaldo producing magic in every single game and Rooney remaining fit and available for every single game. With another centre forward, even an average one, United would sweep all before them. Regrettably, that doesn't look as if its going to happen this season. I hope I'm proved wrong, but last August I was arguing in this forum that United needed another centre forward. Nothing has happened since to cause me to change my mind.

United haven't lost anything until they have mathematically lost, this is football, predictions and analysis mean nothing to 22 men on the pitch giving everything they have. I'm sure that United's lack of attacking options is a problem that SAF will address, but he hasn't led them wrong yet so I'd trust his plan. So what if they had one bad game against Man City, everyone can have bad games regardless of whether or not they have every position covered, so that game cannot be indicative of anything. If they had lost the last 4 or 5 games then yes I'd say that they were on a decline, but I'm not going to rule them out. Never rule anything out, EVER.

Is this deja vu? Methinks that Arsenal had a 5 point lead in January 2003. Is that right?

    Cue the Nani jokes...

United can not be ruled out, not in mid february. However 5 points is a large gap. I believe that it is games againt the opposition from outside the top 4 that decide the league, not as many people are led to believe games between the top 4. United are short a frontman or two. I believe that nicholas anelka may have been an excellent buy for united but that, unfortunately, didn't happen. The ideal striker was one ruud van nistelrooy who is presently scoring left, right, and centre for real madrid.
Unfortunately, sir alex sold him as van nistelrooy got on the wrong side of him. Perhaps it was for the best, who knows. Getting back to the point, united suffered a major setback against city and against spurs. However, there are still quite a few games to play and anything can happen......................

    Andrei -

So by your logic Arsenal will have another unbeaten season in 2008-09.
    That's fine by me.

Spiral, you know that's not what I meant...

I meant that all we have to do is win a few games and wait for Arsenal to throw the title away against the likes of Sunderland. You seriously do not think that Man Utd would miss another last minute penalty against Arsenal, do you?
