    A quick check:

Arsenal sign Eduardo Da Silva - for around 7.5m (not 16m as mentioned elsewhere) and have a record goalscorer (albeit in the Croatian league) on the books.

Tottenham sign Darren Bent - for 13.5m (not 16.5m) and have a striker with Premiership experience, goalscoring capabilities and a lot of ambition.

Liverpool sign Fernando Torres - for 26.5m (they send Luis Garcia back for 3.5m though) and have a striker with considerable experience in dealing with pressure, a helluva lot of talent and potential and he'll see shirts, too.

    Who made the better signing?

    Please judge objectively :)

Well I think Eduardo, with the amount of chances Arsenal create he should score alot, plus he's fast and seems like he would fit into Arsenal's style of play. Bent won't start so i can't see him being anything more than someone who can come off the bench and score a few important goals. He's not better than Keane or Berbatov, but they did ned another good back-up striker in case Defoe leaves. Torres is god and he's exactly what Liverpool neede, he's fast and he can score goals on his own, but with the way Liverpool play I can see him scoring the least amount of goals out of the three.

Well if you included Newcastle in the debate it would have to be Mark Viduka. Has a better scoring record (goals per minutes played) than any striker in the premier league (he was second behind Henry) and he cost absolutely nothing!

no doubt in my mind arsenal have made the best signing here. To begin with, Bent is not owrth as much as a 29 year old henry, he is icnredibly similar type player to defoe and if spurs are going to keep him it simply means they are adding back up to their squad. Tehre is a reason he couldnt make the England squad and none o f the big 4 wanted him - he lacks the piece of magic that henry or torres can give to a match - sparking it into life.
Torres is a brillaint player but the 26mil pound price tag is a bit much. He will struggle to lay alongside Peter Crouch as he likes to pick the ball up in the midfield and run at players, and LIverpools long ball to Crouch tacttics will not suit his style of play.. His arial ability will be useful but he will need to gel withkuyt to really provide Liverpool with their money's worth.
Finally to dudu Silva. The man can finish, even in the Croatian league one must admit that 34 goals from 32 games is an incredible record, combine this with goals against both the England and Arsenal defence's and his goal scoring ability is up there with the best. Arsenal's problem in the past has been a lack of finishing, could they ahve finally discovered the answer??? With so many chances being wasted by Baptista and co last season, one wonders how mnay goals Arsenal will score with a proven and lethal number 9 - Just as Wenger has replaced Wright and Anelka - it seems he has found his replacement for Henry.

Remember Kezman? 31 goals in 29 games for PSV (arguably the Dutch league is more competitve than the Croatian one) and then he moved to the Premier League........

Mark Viduka and Da Silva, both came to England from Dinamo. I think Da Silva will be one of the top 5 scorers in England this year, and next year he'll show that he's the best.

Barring injury, Da Silva should score the most goals of the three simply because Arsenal got the most direct fit of the three. Arse missed buckets of chances last year that this kid would have put away. With a bit of tweaking elsewhere, Eduardo makes Arsenal a contender almost overnight.

Torres is a terrific talent, but who knows exactly how Rafa intends to use him? He's not a natural predator like Da Silva -- or Morientes, who failed at Anfield -- but he still could have massive impact on the whole side. Of course for that kind of money, he should. If not, this signing will cost Benitez his job -- and rightly so. Be fascinating to see if Rafa plays Torres with Crouch, and if he does, how it works out.

Bent is another Defoe. Yes, he can score but when and how will he get on the pitch? Lot of money to spend on a No. 3 (or No. 4) striker. Spurs have spent a bundle and now are overloaded in some spots and light in others. I'm still not sure why Bent even wanted this move. Maybe he'll surprise us but all the bigger clubs passed on him and they're all pretty shrewd judges of talent -- not to mention that United and Arsenal were looking for strikers.

As for the business of judging how someone will produce coming from another league, you simply have to wait and see. No true gauge available. Somebody mentioned the failure of Kezman who lit up the Dutch league, but so did Ruud and he was -- and still is -- one of the best goal scorers in football.

Unless Da Silva freezes under the weight of expectation -- and his performances at the international level suggest otherwise -- he would seem to be an awesome fit for Arsenal. He'll almost certainly take penalties, as well, so 20 goals appears to a reasonable total given the chances he'll see. He could take awhile to get comfortable, but he's already moved haflway round the world a couple times with no difficulty so that may not be a problem. I've personally seen Eduardo play four times on TV -- three Euro qualifiers and a game against Arsenal -- and he scored in all of them, looking dangerous every minute.

If Torres fits in as a gifted all-purpose star at Anfield, then the battle at the top of Prem has just gone from two teams to four.

Spurs should be better, but so are the teams who were well above them.

    My rank of these signings:
    1. Eduardo Da Silva
    2. Fernando Torres
    3. Darren Bent

Final note: Strong rumours that Arsenal aren't finished acquiring people and that Martins still on the list. In that scenario, the team probably gets considerably better and more versatile but Eduardo plays a little more on the wing and perhaps scores less goals.

Even without Martins, I can see Arsenal now playing a 4-1-4-1 with Gilberto in front of the back four as usual, Rosicky and Fabregas in the middle, Eduardo and van Persie on the wings and Adebayor at the target man to set up runs from everyone else.

That's a world more firepower than Arsenal's had since Henry was healthy two years ago, especially with Walcott due for a breakout year and backups in the middle (Denilson) and at holding midfielder (Diaby).

In any event, Eduardo will get 20 goals unless he's totally overrated, and there's no evidence whatsoever to suggest it.

With out a doubt Arsenal. Da Silva is great and more important, he will be forced to play well in the Arsenal since there arent a lot of choices in there.

Torres is a good player, but in my opinion is not great. Totally overrated. Plus, I dont see he and Crouch playing well together. Styles completly diferent, making one feel the other player as if outside of game, just occupying space.

    Darren Bent who?

I just cant get over the fact that spurs have yet again paid out such a large sum of money on an over rated striker! Ive heard that they paid 16.5m for him and also 13.5m, either way both prices are way to much for a player who cant make the england squad! Spurs already had Defoe who is an amazing player, keane and berbatov are just the same, all great strikers. and to bring someone like Bent into the mix for that kind of cash astounds me! Dont get me wrong, he is a decent player, a tops 5m player tho.. with so many other amazing strikers out there why did spurs choose and pay for this over rated 1?

    Well.......
the fact is that such a question is more of a wait and watch than an instinctive answer... most of the footballing world has not seen what eduardo can do at a consistent level of top flight 'premiership quality' football--- look at shevchenko... he was suppossed to come and conquer... conquer he did but only the hearts of the AC board who would be laughing at the 30 million they got for him and his lacklustre performances...

Well fernando torres......... exceptionally talented as a youngster... followed by chelsea and man utd and bought by liverpool... need i say more.. 3 of the top 4 wanted him... already a regular member of the spanish side and so on.... would actually bring some fear into the rest of the premiership's defences but the point is would he be effective enough...

he is a player who will need the team to be built to suit him and after steven gerrard he's probably the most talented of the lot (mascherano is also up there)... but can three talents win you the league... i dont think so... (no disrespect to carra -- but hez the hard worker, not the talented) the rumour is that rafa is looking for wingers and if he can bring better ones than pennant, then i think they will have a real chance to challenge... (but only if rafa plays his cards well during the season... his rotation policy does not seem to work somehow at the start of the season)

    Bent??/
Why do tottenham need him anyway..arent berbatov, keane, defoe good enough.. the only way that bent's going to play is if keane or defoe are kept out... so probably 13 mill--- too overpriced for a 2nd choice sub unless Martin Jol does not rate defoe as a starter or berbatov is leaving......
So the importance and adequacy of this one will be clear only when the transfer season closes and i dunno why but i have a gut feeling that hez goin to end up in a red shirt.... i know its wishful thinking but he totally suits our style of play and his coming would make me happier than probably tevez coming coz the guy is tall and far better in the air..
If hez at man u... then we are winning the champs league.... (not that we are far off right now... we only need to gel out newbies with the oldies and the quality of football that we play)..........

What I would like to say is Da Silva will certainly score goals for Arsenal. How many times have we seen Arsenal passing the ball into the penalty box but no one takes the shot this season? Judging from the video I have seen of Da Silva, he is the sort of striker who will take any chances, and take it well to be exact. Well, from the superb midfielders like Fabregas and Hleb who can get through passes into the box, I believe the striker instincts of Da Silva will ensure he has a great season with Arsenal. And at the same time, leaves Torres and Bent running for their money.

Hmm, the topic is a bit misleading, Tottenham HAD the better striker prior to any signings in Berbatov. I love Torres, I think he's the best of the bunch but time will tell on his impact in the EPL.

I don't understand Bent's signing, Spurs were loaded at forward and you can't play 'em all. I don't think Bent is better than Defoe, but Jol seems to despise Defoe so who knows.

Da Silva is a decent signing, I can't remember the figure though so it's hard to judge if it was worth it, and I don't think he's a direct Henry replacement (admittedly not many are!).

I was under the impression that Da Silva was left-footed like RVP, so I don't know if they'll be playing on the wings together. Don't forget we still have Hleb (who, despite last season's up and downs, has been a pretty consistent performer), Walcott (who can take right-wing) and Ljungberg (who doesn't want to leave and right now it'd be nice to see some experience and loyalty in next year's Arsenal side).

It's hard to know whether Eduardo will make it here in England. It's hard enough to judge whether a player from Spain or Italy, where the quality is not such a leap in difference, will make it. Saying that, no matter what league, his scoring record was very impressive and I trust highly in Wenger's judgment. I've also a feeling he'll be a really good one for us, though I'm starting to believe in the possibility that he could be played as a winger, or both.

Bent's a good player but is he better than Keane? I don't know. Not going to comment on how much he cost because the question's, simply, who has the better striker and that's irrelevant.

Torres is another from a different country who'll have to adjust to the style of the Premier League. He's not a born goal scorer but has other talents I assume that he'll also bring to the Liverpool camp.

So, I guess I'll sit on the fence with this one and say I'll be better poised to make a call at the end of the new season. Saying that, I'm tempted to go for Dudu merely because I'm biased. :D

yea, tat's what i wanna say. i dont think torres wil adapt well, but if benitez give him 6 months to adapt in EPL, he wil improve. for chelsea, omg.. i dont know how they use the players, jose just casually drop'em and use'em.

ok, back to topic. i stil think that only arsenal's da silva and spurs's darren bent are useful and making impact in EPL - mayb i trust wenger and martin jol's perspective more than benitez. He always bought the players to suit his tactics ONLY but not the player who able to play like a team and win like a team. Players couldnt improve the way they should! most of the player follow the HIS tactics (which they must) and play out-of-position. Look at manutd and arsenal. That is what i called, attacking football and entertainment football.

seems like i hate liverpool and benitez?haha.. not really. stil think that benitez is the best tactician in football coaching. second? jose i think.

I have a sneaky feeling that Jol misjudged the Berbatov/Bent issues. I think he expected ManU to take Berbatov and therefore got Bent to play alongside Defoe. Now, no-one is taking Berbatov, so he now sits with an expensive problem.
