Hey guys, after letting you guys know I'm a football scouting consultant on Soccerlens, I was asked to create a topic so that people could ask me questions about things that I might know or could answer: do I know about any inside goings on in organizations, how scouting is developed or done, what different organizations are like to interact with, what have you. I can try and help answer some of your questions. Just letting you guys know, but I can't talk about the players I'm currently scouting. I can talk about players i have scouted, was going to scout but didn't, clubs I've worked for (unless they asked me not to divulge their names) and other stuff to. Well lets here it!

What? I didn't foul him, I just nudged him a bit

Ok, lets see, to answer some of these questions...

Duffman, I almost always take a trip to Arsenal, they always produce immense youngsters

Xerxes, I got the job by doing a sports management 4 year degree in the US and then completing the FIFA Sports Masters program in Europe. That and watching loads of football haha.

Rhian, I'm always looking for Carribean players, scouts right now? Well, we'll be in touch if I do

Utdfan, lets see, who has promising talent right now. Arsenal as always, Sporting as loads of talent, as they always do. A suprising name with promising talent is Chelsea, Leeds United. A foreign team that has loads of untapped talent is ENPPI Club in Egypt. Amr Zaki played there for a while, and in the next few years, expect Premiership bottom feeders to clean this team of all of its talent. Its got all sorts of Egyptian national teamers, and EPL clubs are just starting to get wind of it.

Azz, I only got to work for Sporting once, so i don't know them really that well, but its interesting because they have a lot of homegrown talent, but they feel like bigger clubs will always take their players, so they need to figure out another way to stay relevant in Europe.

    Anything else lads?

not necessarily, however some sort of degree is preferred, as i said, i got a top job with two degrees, both sport based. Usually, one starts off in a different part of football before moving on to scouting, such as coaching or front office or what have you.

I would like a bit of a follow up on the question by X_K (hope you don't mind). On what criteria do they pay you?

    On a similar note:

How is a scout's contract formulated? I mean, is it possible for you to have a full time contract at one club and they send you scouting around the world, or do clubs call and ask if you would like to scout Switzerland for them, or do they ask you to watch Wellington (an example) for them?

    Cue the Nani jokes...

    ok, lets see...

Xerxes and Andrei, the pay is good, it just depends on what your doing, also you get a commision for players you scout that pan out too (if the club is big enough).

The clubs usually pay to be clients of the scouting firm, and sometimes they ask for a particular consultant if they worked for them before and liked them, or if they don't ask, they are assigned a consultant. For example, Ipswich Town really likes me, so when they call up the firm, they ask to work with me usually. Sometimes my scouting involves looking for actually a specific type of player (such as a speedy winger) or a particular player, or maybe just a more general search (such a promising young talent from Morocco) that sort of thing...

Duffman, I can comment of Conor Henderson a bit. I can tell you he'll be in the ROI side soon. He's good, really good.

Rhian, not necessarily. I have plenty of coworkers who got into scouting in different ways. Some were managers from town clubs or something, others were lawyers. Basically, you just have to prove you can scout talent, however that happens. It just depends. Its more likely that as a scout, you would work for an actual club though.

Hamburg, what do you mean exactly? One was a bachelor degree in Sport Management for Ithaca College in NY, the other was a FIFA Sports Masters degree, here is the site for the program. Its tough to get into, but if you do, you have a beeline into football. http://www.fifamaster.org/

Foster- send me a personal message about help with internships

Scotgun, I've never actually worked for SPL clubs personally, but our firm has worked for Dundee United and Motherwell. I have a coworker who is Scottish, so he does all of that work. I have scouted at plenty of Scottish clubs though...

    Need any better descriptions?

American Mike Grella to Leeds and Jim McNulty to Brighton.

I got a commision on the Grella deal. Very happy about that

Haha scotgun, 1 million pounds a week right?

yeah Xerxes, basically, a president's job is outlook. By that I mean, they do the job of making decisions on where the club is going. The rest of the front office usually does the work to figure the best way to do that, but its the president who says, "I think a good goal is making it to this place domestically, and maybe make a UEFA Cup birth." Or whatever that may be. The rest of the front office comes to him and says something like, "I know you wanted to make it to 5th place in the EPL, here is what us at scouting think we need to do to accomplish that goal and what sort of money we will need to do that. Does that sound like a good idea?"

He also has final say on all personel and financial decisions. So, for example, he is the one who signs off on transfers in and out. No deal is done without him approving it first.

Those things a President has always done. Now days, some presidents take it upon themselves to sort of be the face of the club too, it just depends on their managerial style.
