Four head to heads of massive importance take place in the EPL this weekend. The teams involved will treat them like Cup Finals. Two take place at the top of the table; and two at the bottom.

    Let’s start at the bottom.

    Newcastle v. Fulham

Contrary to received wisdom, a good result for Newcastle would be a draw against Fulham. If they draw they remain six points clear of Fulham, and edge a point closer to safety. What Newcastle can’t afford to do, is taste defeat.

For Fulham, this is an equally huge game. A win gives them a really big chance of staying up; puts them to within 3 points of Newcastle and drags 7 or 8 other clubs into an even more intense. A Fulham win sends an electric shock through their rivals hovering about the relegation trap door.

Verdict: Newcastle get their first win under Keegan.

    Reading v. Birmingham

A massive game, for both clubs. Neither can afford to lose. Neither will. Verdict: A draw.

    …………………………………………………………………………………………….

Now for Grand Slam Sunday. We talk of the Big Four. Earlier in the season we were starting to talk about a Special Two (Arsenal and United). After the Sunday will it be time to get ready to hail the Dominant One? Who will that One be? Let’s look at the games.

    Man Utd v. Liverpool

Benitez says that Liverpool are not out of the title race. This is for public consumption. Even if they won every game from now to the end of the season, Liverpool will not win the EPL. One or even two of Arsenal, Chelsea or United could implode, but not all 3 of them. This is why one book-maker is offering 100/1 against Liverpool doing it. But to put one over United (as rivals City did twice) would go a long, long way to keeping the red half of Merseyside happy.

It's the shoot-out at the O.T. Corral: gunslinger ‘Ronnie the Kid’ Ronaldo v gunslinger Torres the Terror, the world’s best player v. the world’s best striker; Portugal (Queiroz, Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson – well, he speaks Portuguese) v. Spain (Benitez, Reina, Alonso, Torres Arbeloa); blue Scouser (Rooney) v. red Scouser (Gerrard). Verdict: United to win, by a single goal.

    Chelsea v. Arsenal

This is the moment of truth. The defining moment for both Avram Grant and Arsenal. Will Grant win a really big game; will he finally beat one of the Big Four and lay the ghost of Mourinho to rest (at least for a week)? Will Arsenal now stand up and show that they have mettle as well as skill? When the going gets tough, Arsenal, do you roll your sleeves up like men, or squabble like kids and punch your team-mate on his conk? Verdict: disappointment for both Grant and Arsenal. Game ends in a feisty draw.

At the end of the weekend:

Ferguson will be smiling ---- Benitez will be relaxed and focussed on Everton and the CL ---- Grant worried, but stressing that United still have to go Stamford Bridge and play Arsenal --- Wenger (unconvincingly) praising the character and mental strength of his “young” team --- Keegan saying that Newcastle have turned the corner --- Roy Hodgson of Fulham will be giving it the mantra “it’s not all over yet” --- Reading and Birmingham as you were ….

If United go 5 points clear with only 7 games to go, they will have unstoppable momentum. It may then be time to talk less about a Big Four and get ready to hail the Dominant One.

When you gaze into your crystal ball do you read it as I do?

After last nights results the weekend games at the top have gone from crucial to (possibly) definitive.
If Utd beat Liverpool and Arsenal don't win at Chelsea then the gap will be either 5 and 6 or 5 and 7 points to 2nd and 3rd place. With just 7 games to go I don't think Utd would blow that lead.
Basically, if Utd beat Liverpool they become virtually unbackable for the title.

Can the Scousers keep the contest alive for the rest or will Utd comfortably dispose of them again? Not for the faint hearted this one.

P.S. I see the fat waiter is proclaiming that Liverpool are not yet out of the title race! Can someone please explain to him the difference between mind games and stupidity. It must have been lost in translation!!

heh - i think we're all in agreement that:

if united win and arsenal-chelsea ends in a draw, is as good as all over.

don't think Pool are in the title race, nor are they in a race for 3rd spot. They are, however, only 3 points ahead of Everton.

6 points behind Chelsea is not an insurmountable gap for Liverpool to close.

Much depends on what happens to Chelsea over the next 2 or 3 EPL games: Arsenal (h) Middlesborough (h) Wigan (h). Chelsea would back themselves to win all three. If Wigan and Middlesborough repeat performances against Arsenal and surprise Chelsea, Chelsea will fall too far behind United. They'll give up the chase for the title and put all their eggs in the CL basket.

Potential for Chelsea to drop unexpected league points the further they go in the CL, if title race effectively over by then. Meanwhile, Liverpool in trying to keep Everton at bay might get closer to Chelsea by default.

But what practical difference does it make finishing 3rd rather than 4th? Do Platini's CL reforms come in next season, or the season after next?

Chelsea won't lose hope - they'll go for the 2nd spot and automatic qualification.

Platini's reforms start from 09/10, and will be reviewed at the end of the 11/12 season (3 year period).

    practical difference = money.

who do you support frankie? I ask only because while I suspect United, you give Liverpool way too much respect :P

frankie man now u r a gud thinker of the game man...i think i can learn loadz frm u....but unfortunately iv got 2 disagree with u...i dont think newcastle will win at fulham...newcastle hav d players but deyr down and out at d moment whereas fulham r up after dere victory over everton..i think its either gonna b a victory 4 fulham or a draw...unless...
i think v all will agree that newcastle hav 2 gud a team 2 b relegated..i mean owen nzogbia martins..n i relly like this guy milner....deyr far better than the others..and i think its jus gonna take 1 momment of brilliance frm 1 of the above mentioned players...jus 1 moment which wld give them a massive lift...which wld give them somethin 2 cheer about....n im sure if that moment cums within the next 4-5 games...then newcastle will easily survive..infact they nearly had it...a few matches ago wen martins hit d bar from a long way out...that so nearly cld hav bin the turning point of the season
    i agree with u 4 the rest..

    fatehsmann:

You may be right about the Newcastle result. They could easily lose. A lost for them would be calamitous. I think that their fortune will change at some point, and they probably won't get a better chance than against Fulham.

Information on Platini's reforms can be found on the link in Ahmed's post immediately above.

Ahmed, I'm really touched by your interest in where my true affections lie. You're beginning to sound a bit like a girlfriend I once had ...... :)

Just because a man loves one woman doesn't mean that he cannot appreciate the finer assets of other women. 8)

I appreciate the power of Chelsea, the finesse of Arsenal and the organisation of Liverpool.

But, as you know, I'm very happily married to another team!
