I feel sorry for Rafa. It seems that the players that played so well last year are not playing anywhere near the same level this time around. Carragher has been in decline for the last 6 to 12 months, Mascherano seems to still be affected by Argentina's woes as well as Barcelona turning his head, Torres and Gerrard are always injured. The only player really playing to his usual standard is Pepe Reina and possibly Benayoun (although he's still too inconsistent for my liking!) With all the injuries to players like Riera, Aurellio, Skertel, Agger, Johnson, etc, it all adds up, especially when the team is lacking confidence.
They need players to come back and a bit of luck soon!

they purely wanted to rest players for the Lyon game next week, hopeing to scrape a win or draw against Fulham.

Zamora definately gave Carra some karma. after how he got a away with just a yellow against Owen, this must be sweet revenge.

and for the last time, stop taking off Benayoun when he is all the hope the team has left of getting back into the game.

After their loss to Fulham today, one has to ask an important question -- will Rafa get the sack? And if so, when? For me, this kind of performance early in the season is terrible and Rafa will warrant it if he gets it. Your thoughts?

I don't think the Shankly vs. Benitez rivalry should be taken very seriously; it's obvious that Shankly was the better manager -- Benitez still hasn't won the league. Ferguson is a brilliant manager, more so that Matt Busby, but not so much a pioneer as Busby. If the question is simply who is the better manager, the answer is Ferguson; if the question is "who is the most important", then it's Busby.

Sir Matt Busby built the history and character of the club. The ghosts of Munich have been a blessing in disguise for United, with the confirmation of the teams return and the final instalment of their legacy completed in 69. It's that extra bit of motivation that United have in their locker, but it is Sir Alex's continual excellence in the different aspects of managerial ability that make him stand out from the rest. The fact he's won twice as many European cups and bucket loads of other trophies, in an arguably better standard of football, propels him above Sir Matt.

Fergie is a lot easier to get on with than Benitez. A lot of Pool players don't like his decision to not give out compliments for a players performance or take an interest in their personal life. This can be very frustrating for any player, Alonso an example, whereas more managers and players alike only talk of the respect and admiration if quizzed on SAF, Ronaldo one of many other examples.

yeah about SAF dying in the pitch like jock stein, i can see the similarties in here

Alex, I suggest you read "Shankly: It's More Important Than That" if you don't think Bill Shankly was a control freak. Shankly was never more than an employee, whereas Louis Edwards made Busby a major shareholder. These men were born into the kind of poverty that's incomprehensible to us now. Ferguson is a mountain of contradictions, but Queiroz and McLaren, not to mention most of his old players from Aberdeen and United who went on to manage are all very close to him still. His falling out with Kiddo has to do with the timing of his leaving. Despite being a brilliant youth coach and scout, Kidd has been an utter failure as a manager. Nobody gets along with Pauly Ince for long, but he's still out there playing golf in Hale Barns with the Gaffer and Sparky at least once a month or so. I think Ferguson will die on the pitch, just like Jock Stein. As exemplified in his press conference yesterday where threw a few grenades at Shitty, he's having way too much fun to quit.

Not picking successors...Creating a boot room of people he could work with to help the club move forward...As soon as a current Man Utd assistant manager gets anywhere near quality, they have to move out (i.e. Kidd, McLaren, Queros perhaps Ferguson's control-freak nature has something to do with this) whereas Shankly's dream and vision kept his backup staff (Fagan, Evans, Dalglish etc there)

Ferguson's had more success quantity-wise, but Busby, was the first manager to think in terms of building an academy and dragging the F.A. (kicking and screaming) into playing teams in European competitions. He came from a Lanark mining town about 3 miles from where Shankly came from. Busby was a far better footballer than Shankly and won much more than Shankly in his time as manager, although Shankly was far wiser about picking successors. There are many of us who wonder what might have happened had Brian Clough taken over from Busby instead of the disastrous hirings of O'Farrell, Sexton and Atkinson.

Was just wondering on Man United fans point of view: who was better for MUFC: Matt Busby or Alex Ferguson?

I'm a Liverpool fan and even if Rafa managed to recreate the success of the 70s/80s I would still hold Shankly in higher regard. He laid the foundation for all of Liverpool's successes and without him, Rafa wouldn't even be at Liverpool. Nor, probably, would the Reds have won an FA Cup yet, not to mention 5 Champions Leagues. Imagine if Shanks had gone to Everton (remember he was appointed to Liverpool by one of Everton's directors) and Everton, already the 2nd best team of the 70s/80s (Sorry Cloughy) had been the best? Would Moyes be there now? Or would Liverpool be the team punching above their weight in 5th? Another fork: http://soccerlens.com/football-fork-25-may-2005-liverpool-try-valiantly-but-cannot-win-the-champions-league-final/26239/

I think Liverpool should change their motto from "You'll Never Walk Alone" to "There's Always Next Year". Benitez always worries about playing his talented kids at crunch games. I know he shouldnt but their experience should be enough that they are capable of handling a start in a one-sided match (like home to Burnley). SAF is brilliant at that. Look at how he eased Rafael into the first team picture. And to think the kid hadnt played football for 18months...he was a revelation!!

arsenal are slowly geting better with ech season but they will need signings this summer to challenge next season. as for pools youth. maybe the carling cup would be better. given the fact that there is more pressure every year for liverpool to win the prem, i think rafa should just stick to his best 11 and play them consistently.

Rafa has decided on complete revamp of the youth system. Agreed that not many young players have come through the ranks.
But Rafa is making a difference with the return of King Kenny - smart move!
The Boot Room is still very much alive. Dalglish will bring these 5 qualities to Liverpool.
