I was at the seattle vs Chelsea the game before that, and everyone was standing and watching the game. My father was actually surprised how every single people in the stadium was standing even the elderly. The only disrespected thing I saw was a group of teenagers with a old chelsea jersey taped to a cardboard with a red x on it saying " your team suks" yes thats right, wrong spelling....

I drove out from Las Vegas with my brother to see the Chelsea/Inter friendly on their USA tours. I know its long winded, but bare with me here...

Let me preface my review with this: it was my first PRO soccer match since the Indy Twisters (and CISL) folded in 97 when I was 9. I got back into it in high school, as a spectator, for United, Galaxy, and the US Nats, but my younger brother grew attached to Chelsea, mostly to spite me. With world class football in the offering, I planned the trip, put aside my loyalty to United and donned his spare Chelsea shirt, and learned the songs in the car on the way.

Don't get me wrong, I loved every second of it, but I was severely disappointed in the atmosphere, considering there were 81000 people there.

My tickets were for the less expensive "Chelsea Supporters" area by the corner flag. Around a tenth of the section was for Inter, which initially had me worried, but they were very civil the whole time, despite the loss, and I respect them a great deal for it.

My problem though, rested with those remaining in the sea of Chelsea jerseys in my section. Other than a small pocket of us fans in the front who actively supported, the rest just sat there complaining in their replica shirts about how we stood, sang, and chanted as 'ruining their experiences,' even going as far as threatening us with violence and death, organizing a 'sit down mother f#ckers' chant (instead of joining the actual chants, which few seemed to know) and eventually, throwing things at us, until security had to get involved.

Fortunately, in the section next to us, the situation was reversed, with vocal supporters heckling sitting supporters, and we were able to organize a switch that was favorable to all with the help of security staff.

I watch MLS, EPL, and national team games on TV whenever I can and I expected a lot more 'support' from the supporters. While the game was great, my experience in the stands was quite different from how it is at my university's games, causing me to question my beliefs about the state of the game in the US and fandom in general.

Is there typically so much discrepancy in attitude from fan to fan? Section to section? How does support differ based on competitiveness, ie Cup/League/Friendlies and EPL/MLS/Internationals/College? Were my assumptions about acceptable supporter behavior correct, or were my actions wrong? Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Confused,

Crazy Mike

i'm far from a chelsea fan but a clubs all time top goalscorer has to be in the starting 11. meaning Essien would be in the middle, Lampard on the right, Zola in behind Osgood and Tambling. Makelele on the bench. as for ashley cole, Chopper harris is chelsea's all time highest appearence maker and was captain. he won the 1970 fa cup and the 1971 European cup winners cup. so for that reason combined with the fact that i hate ashley cole, harris would start for me.

With each of these players in their prime....this team would be unbeatable....true Maka was not at his peak with us but I interpreted this to mean what is the greatest team your club could put out using past players hypothesizing that each would be in his prime...

If so Claude Makalele would definitely be a starter. At their prime, the four I have selected would surely be the best midfielders to ever play for us. The only player in prime form that could arguably displace any of these is Gullit.

Skill, Desire, Tactics....he has it all. But to say he's the "best" is a kinda stretch...I don't think anyone can comprehensively say who is the "best" and for that matter what makes them the best. But Essien is probably the most complete.

Xavi is the most elegant passer since the the dawn of time. I mean, he is Paul Scholes taken to an extreme. The time he has on the ball and the poise with which he moves it makes him a wonderful team mate.

The thing with Essien is that not only is he the best holding midfielder in the world, he is also an accomplished passer, a versatile player, determined, strong and serious (unlike clowns like Drogba or the Iberian Lesbian). This makes him the best player in the world.

As for Villa v Torres, the latter wins the battle by far. He might not score as much but he helps his team mates immensely by creating space in attack and bringing them into play. Torres is the best forward in the world today.

Best player in the world? im not sure, Probably the best midfielder after xavi, and iniesta, followed by kaka and gerrard. Pound for pound the best forward on the planet has to be Torres, he has everything.

Essien and Hargreaves really do have true versatility. There's no doubt as to Veiera's quality, but that goal Essien scored in the E.C. semis against Barca was a fucking gobsmacker. Essien is the best of the best! Let me say it again: Pound for pound, Michael Essien is the best footballer in the world. I am certainly not a Chelsea fan, but the truth is the truth! As for desire, Veiera was never the same after Wenger refused to flog him to Real and most Gooners will admit it.
