Wenger's got the stats in his head. Probably not in a literal sense but in an intuitive one. Translating that into a mathematical representation will be a tall order but I'm sure someone's working on it. Very interesting article, Sam.

I know you're joking, but I also didn't mean to invite the comparison because I don't think it's fair. It's an incredible achievement what Wenger has done with so little money, but it's not really the same as if I team like Fulham had done it. How much money does Arsenal spend on scouting? Not to mention that whatever it costs them in transfer fees to bring players in, the smaller clubs just couldn't afford the wages of the best Arsenal players. We've seen teams like West Ham develop player after player but lose almost all of them, which Arsenal most certainly doesn't have to do--though they do sell players earlier than most (see: Viera, Patrick). The point is that the A's lose their best players every year just like West Ham, but almost always manage to come up with a cheaper alternative almost as good to replace them.

That being said, Wenger is a little like the Beane of football, just in a very different way. He doesn't use stats but is very good at seeing who is undervalued in the market and knows when to let go of players past their prime. The difference is he has money to fall back if he makes mistakes, which Beane does not.

shedding light on how his teams consistently competed with teams like the Yankees and Red Sox on 1/3 of the payroll

The A's have been better in the regular season than the Yankees 3 out of the last 7 years, and close to them in most of the others, with about the difference in payroll between Fulham and Chelsea

Now you've done it...cue comparisons between Arsenal and United, although now that you've revealed Wenger's big secret he doesn't look that great, does he (joking, joking)?
