Manchester United Update – Evans, Jones, Scholes & Fletcher

Sunday was a slow, slow news day. So slow, in fact, that Sky Sports was reporting on what Dave Whelan thought of Paul Jewell (really, should we be redefining fluff or what) and Ballack’s realisation that his career will be over in 3 years was taken as his undying love for new club Chelsea.

I mean, seriously, give me a break.

But if you dig deep, you can find a couple of good reads on Manchester United from the weekend and last week. Here’s the best of them.

Paul Scholes interview – a trip down memory lane with Scholes. Yes, you’ve probably read it already…

Darren Fletcher interview – Fletcher is earning grudging respect from Manchester United fans after his much-improved performances this season, and the interview highlights the life that goes on behind the scenes. He’s not our best midfielder, but he is improving, and maybe, just maybe, he can turn things around and justify his place in the squad this season.

I’ve been reading rumours around the Net that David Jones is about to sold off, and for my money that’s absolute rubbish. Right now Manchester United are short of central midfielders – once the Carling Cup and FA Cup come along Manchester United will need to dig in deep and that’s where Jones will get his chance to break into the first team. If you’ve seen him play in pre-season you’ll know that he’s right up there with Rossi and Evans in terms of being a quality player – definitely first-team material.

Jonny Evans – It’s good to see Jonny Evans do well for Northern Ireland. Not that I give a damn about the team, but it does mean that in a year we will have a quality centre-back pushing for a first-team spot. Some people had said earlier that Manchester United had too much depth in defence, but he is good enough to be a regular backup and could even be the eventual replacement for Rio Ferdinand (we can hope, right?).

Oh, and Ronaldo had a gem of a game on the weekend for Portugal. Here’s a video clip of his overhead kick goal that wasn’t given.

Maybe he can pull it off for Manchester United against Wigan?

    Haven’t commented on here in a while….

Fletch really has improved a lot so far this season, if he was a slightly better passer of the ball it would make the 18million spent on carrick a bigger joke then it already is.

As for Jones, i would be gutted to see him leave without being given a chance – what type of message would it be sending to the kids at United if a youngster who has captained United at every level he has played can not get a chance in the team.

Surprised you have not mentioned Nani in your weekend summary – the kid looks class and apparently we are making a move to sign him. Could be the next (but more direct) Cristiano Ronaldo for us. A very talented right sided midfielder and would allow us to play Ronnie on the left when Giggs moves on. At 19 he is still young enough to accept a rotation system imo.

Have seen the rumours this morning too. Though have also seen rumours of Ritchie Jones, instead of Davey. Maybe some of these “reliable” sources have got themselves mixed up?

Davey Jones had a great time out at NEC, and Preston and is sure to be one for United’s future, along with Evans.

Also got to keep an eye out for Darron Gibson – he looks the business too!

I hope we’re not letting David Jones go anywhere, not after he played so well in the preseason! Where is he rumoured to be going?
