Are all in a different league to Roberto Carlos. In 50 years from now I don’t think Carlos will be mentioned in the same breathe as some of the Legends I have mentioned that did not make your list.

Danny McGrain – As good as any full back in the world for a long long time. Left or right back, suffered a fractured skull and diabetes neither of which held him back.

Mathias was a better midfielder.

Beckenbauer, Maldini, Moore, Baresi – Indisputeably.

Ruud Krol better dutch master than Staam.

Roberto Carlos was not a great defender and should not be on a list with the likes of Moore, Baresi and the rest. He wasn’t even a good free kick taker, 99% of his free kicks went hideously wide or were blasted out of the stadium. Cafu was a much much better full back offensively and defensively and should be there instead of Carlos.

GREAT LIST!!! i tot noone could composed a top defenders list with GAETANO SCIREA!! this proves you really know your stuff. most football fans, if u call them fans, forget about that man, scirea .. the same ppl who goes on to say “ferdinand, terry best defender in the world!!” idiots really .. love your list .. all the great defenders i could think of, well except for rcarlos maybe .. and i might add one more name; marius tresor ..

I guess Africa too has produced some good defenders eg Taribo West, Kana Biyick, omam biyick and Stephen Tataw

Not much people gave credit to defender, in football terms, just like Paolo Maldini said when he received European Best Player back in 1994. A defender were more like engine-room-worker, less high-profile compared to flamboyant striker or playmaker. Thus, I appreciate this list of football great defenders. The only question is only for excluding Fabio Cannavaro, a defender who clinched World Best Player award in 2006.
