I have always been an advocate of letting managers have time in their jobs. Sometimes people are just not getting a chance. Can you imagine if Fergie was sacked after a few mid table finishes in his first few seasons? Stability is always key as long as the manager can keep it. If not then there is a need to change. However, problems can just as easily occur with the arrival of new managers at a club.

Nice article. As a Orient fan i agree that the sacking of Martin Ling was scandalous- what do chairmen expect from managers when they give them a meagre budget to do business with? Ling was nominated for manager of the month in November! When you look at the finacial power of clubs like Leyton Orient and then the fee and potential wages Man City were prepared to pay Kaka, you realise that football has gone MAD!

With the heightening financially vested interests that come with being in the top league, clubs are forced to act. Look at Blackburn, sacking a young and supposedly potentially exceptional manager, but who have picked up since. Same thing last season with Fulham sacking Lawrie Sanchez. On the other hand, look at Boro, who have given Southgate the chance to turn it around, and largely speaking he's doing ok. And what's the key behind the stability there? Steve Gibson, a man who loves the area, loves the club, and who respects his employees, WIth globalised owners come principles which water this ethos down.

It's a double edged sword. Some times managers can, and do, turn things around. But footballing culture cannot ever be entirely be divorced from wider culture. Rafa Benitez was sacked 3 or 4 times before he got it right. Iain Dowie has been sacked a similar amount of times now by lower league clubs, and he's damaged goods. Instant success is often imperative.
