Great article Hugo. I used to contribute to both Cock-a-Doodle-Doo and Spur of the Moment fanzines - how they are missed at the Lane nowadays. I laughed when I read your comments about the Opus and the price of the DVDs. Its been cringeworth this season when Spurs have been losing at half time, yet the club is still rattling on about fans parting with £10k on one of their jumbo books. Give me every copy of Cock-a-Doodle-Doo and my personal collection of photos and old match tickets any day!!

Whilst I don't think fanzines will ever die out I think in a lot of cases they will be superceded by the use of ezines. Ezines provide fans with same opportunities as those of a fanzine but cut down on production costs and the use of paper (very environmentally friendly in this day and age). It also allows the possibility of a much wider audience through links in unofficial club forums. Therefore I think the fanzine will itself evolve into this different type of media and still give the fans their own independent voice.

A great article that, cheers. I've always had a fascination with fanzines growing up immersed in media and football culture and I was always attracted to their 'alternative' format. I know there are still many thriving publications out there that continue to cater for a niche audience and have pretty much sold as much (mybe that should be little?) as they always have done. However, I think it's a certainty that fanzines enjoyed their heyday in the late 80's as a response to the changing football culture - they were a way of otherwise unheard fans expressing their views on a troubled game at the time. Unfortunately, their popularity has been hit by internet sites and blogs like this. People still like things to read when they go to matches and travel etc and for that reason I do think they have a future in the game. They should be cherished and hopefully many will survive.
