SA is actually ahead of schedule on stadium and infrastructure construction.
Compare that with the Wembley stadium fiasco. (Is that even finished yet??)

They've rotated the WC around the world (Asia, Africa, South America now in 2014 with Brazil getting it) - I don't think it'll go anywhere but England in 2018, and after that it's between the US and Asia.

Cherie:

Interesting and thought-providing commentary.

FIFA will always focus on the economical aspect. Even if they publicly say otherwise. When the competition came to North America in 1994, most of the world felt it was a folly. But it proved to be a massive success in economic terms, and it raised the profile of the sport (a little) because mainstream American media was forced to cover the spectacle.

For the 2006 World Cup, South Africa, as you probably know, was only one vote short of gaining the competition. It is a huge boost for their pride, along with the entire African continent, to host the event in 2010. Hopefully, as you noted, the infrastructure concerns will be addressed. I think that they will be great hosts, and world football will benefit.

I also feel that the competition needs to return to South America, specifically Brasil, and hopefully that decision will be announced this week.

In terms of less economically powerful nations, the joint bid between Poland and Ukraine will be an interesting test of sorts for Euro 2012. If that proves to be successful, it could open doors for others.

England stands a good chance of hosting if they can get their boisterous fans in order if England gets booted out of the competition.

The 2018 world cup should be played in Australia. Australia has proven with they Sydney Olympics in 2000 that it is more then capable of hosting a large sporting event. This part of the world has never hosted the world cup and it would be a large boost to Australian/South East Asian soccer if the world cup went to The Land Down Under.
