To the Author:
"The governing body has at last looked in the eye some of the concerns that soccer fans have been outlining all along — a lack of solid infrastructure, shoddy safety for the players and the spectators, inadequate stadiums, and a lack of tourism appeal and hospitality to make this more developing country seem as alluring as the lodgings of the more recent Cups "

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO SOUTH AFRICA?

I feel this article is based on all the propoganda out there against an African country hosting the WC. There were no problems (safety, infrastructure, tourism, etc) during hosting the Rugby WC, Cricket WC, African Cup of Nations, etc.

“The problem is they need 10 stadiums and some of these are rugby grounds that are run-down and in a very bad condition.”
- Are these the same stadiums that host Super-14 matches week-in, week-out, with no complaints?

If I were president of the South African government, I would have told FIFA and all its business partners:
"You lying, manipulating, exploiting pieces of shit! Take your fucken WorldCup and shove it!"

A World Cup in Pakistan or India would be as over-hyped & badly organised as it is in South Africa.

But i like the dream... :D

"So with FIFA recently admitting that they are preparing a £400m contingency fund in preparation for the possible collapse of the 2010 South African World Cup, confidence seems, to say the least, to be a bit shaky"

Wow how did this happen? if every country would chip in... lol.. fifa is full of money they dont need to worry about a world cup itself makes millions of dollars in profits,
what can Fifa be worried about? Throw fifa a freaking bone.......

1) Fifa have 400m to spare? If someone gave me 1m I could turn around footy in my country in 3 years flat. 400m, jesus, they should make a bid for Liverpool...

2) DIC / Usmanov / Abramovich / Lakshmi Mittal - all of these guys could potentially stage a World Cup in their own countries seeing the amounts involved :) That would be something, eh?
