Fernando Torres watch: Manchester United or Liverpool?
Fernando Torres has arguably been one of the most talked about upcoming stars in the game.
His blistering pace, his deadly finishing and as described by Spanish Coach Luis Aragones he “never scores two goals the same” referring to his versatility and remarkable keenness on the pitch. These attributes have seen him being constantly linked to the elite group of European clubs. Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are all competing to obtain the services of the young striker. AC Milan and Atletico’s bitter rivals Real are also reportedly interested.
At the tender age of 19, Torres became Atletico’s youngest ever captain. Some said that this would be too much responsibility for him. They were proven wrong and Torres remained consistent and cemented his position as the club’s top scorer for the past four seasons.
To me, it seems inevitable that he will move on this summer, with Manchester United or Liverpool as his most likely destination. I believe that he would be better off at Manchester United as he would get more playing time and he would not be subjected the Rafael Benitez’s rotation policy. His record for the Spanish national team is also quite formidable, with 14 goals. It is suffice to say that the top Scorer of the Under 19s European Championship has a bright future ahead of him.
So, what do YOU think? Will Torres be picked up by Manchester United, or will Liverpool spring for him?
Or will Atletico Madrid hold on to their talisman for one more season?

I dont think Rafa would spent 25 million plus on a striker to rotate him, who ever he buys it will be him alongside Kuyt with Crouch coming in games later on or mixing it with Torres.
June 11th, 2007 @ 16:07I’m not sure what I think.
June 11th, 2007 @ 16:10i do agree whit u the person how wrote this artical needs to get a clue torres would not be rotated
June 11th, 2007 @ 16:11Staying at Atletico, he said he wasn’t gonna leave… ever. Ahmed if u can find that old post u did when Torres pledged his future to Atletico…
June 11th, 2007 @ 16:11Overrated and overpriced.
June 11th, 2007 @ 16:26Torres is a world class player and you canot say that about alot of players and the gaffa knows it he would not rotate him at all but at the same time you have 2 remember that stevi is prob the best mid in the world and he is still rotaterd because of what doing that offers to the team!! if u have kuyt crouch and Torres each one offers a diffrent side to the game and you need differnt styles of play aganisnt differnt team’s!
June 11th, 2007 @ 16:42well said shervin, still a bright future but not world class to me, just about good enough for the national team. Would struggle in england, and he’s never had a 20 goal season in spain, how the hell would he do it in england.
June 11th, 2007 @ 16:45Torres will stay in Atletico!
June 11th, 2007 @ 16:48Torres will be rotated – it’s not a bad mark on Rafa’s strategy, it’s just a fact.
Jade – man I’m looking for it, can’t find it
When I do, I’ll link up to it.
Basically, Torres came out earlier this year and pledged his future to Atletico Madrid, saying that if it takes him 5 years to get AM to the Champions League then he’s willing to spend those 5 years fighting for them.
Loyal SOB. Good for AM, loyalty is hard to find.
And definitely not over-rated.
June 11th, 2007 @ 17:02Found it.
here on SL
June 11th, 2007 @ 17:09here on RR
If anyones seen Torres play …..good as he is he certainly does not possess “blistering pace” in fact that is probably his only downside the fact that he is a little ponderous and slow. I think at the pace the premniership is played at it would not suit his game …..he needs a pacy hitman alongside him to fully flourish…..
June 11th, 2007 @ 17:29Deadly finishing? Are we talking the same player here? He has pace agreed, good technique etc etc but his finishing has never been deadly , ever.. Apart from having a good world cup i really don’t think that he has developed as a player much over the last 3 years.
He’s still doing the same things he was about five years ago when people started talking about him. The fact that people are still talking potential after 5 years in the 1st team should demonstrate that.
Half his goals come from penalties, and well.. The amount he misses (chancewise) for player of his “quality” is shocking.
I agree with Shervin … Overated and overpriced
June 11th, 2007 @ 17:44“deadly finishing” , erm… I don’t think so
He misses to many chances , but he has pace and dribbeling ability but it’s not enough . And About his price he doesn’t deserve it ability wise but because of his marketing ability
June 11th, 2007 @ 18:03Finally some good news! Finally LFC seems to be trying to buy a player! Finally Etoo story has been silenced! Finally! Let´s hope Benitez finishes this one off now because he´s been all talk and no action so far this summer.
June 11th, 2007 @ 18:08Ferguson doesn’t speak spanish – end of story
June 11th, 2007 @ 18:20The reason why he’s not improved vastly since he first burst on the scene is because he’s still at AM. He’s going stale there and the longer he stays at AM the worse it will be for his career.
You see Torres has the potential to be a great player at a elite European club. At AM, he’s got it cushy, the Captain, the fan’s idol, and there’s no slating if he has bad games. Should he take the step to leave, then it will only be for the better of his Career. He needs to push on in his development, and AM he won’t be able to do that. But i must admire his loyalty, which nowadays is a very rare thing indeed.
June 11th, 2007 @ 18:26Extraordinarily overrated. Torres has yet to finish among the top 5 goalscorers in the league. Plays quite similarly to Rooney but without the natural flair and aggression. Long may he stay at Atlético…
June 11th, 2007 @ 18:38Torres is not expensive as his buyout clause on his contract is 25 Million Euros and comparing to the likes of Gilardino at the same price, I think Torres is worth it.He is a great player who Liverpool are seriously interested in, especially after the ‘YNWA’ sign on his captain armband. His secret fond and being Spanish has led Benitez to go after him. Deal ahould be completed soon after the LaLiga season beating ManU who will most probably land Huntaleer
June 11th, 2007 @ 19:00Anyone who is talking about the amount of goals torres scored, just think of the team he’s playing for, if he moved to man utd im sure he’d score more goals, better team= more chances, and he may be slightly over priced, bu he’s young, and he’s already a class player, and to Hugo Steckelmacher, he has loads of falir, and is better at heading than rooney, so they would be good together, they’d create and score loads of goals.
June 11th, 2007 @ 19:01I do think he had a tremendous world cup but remember milan baros how good he was for the czechs in euro o6 i don’t think torres will cut it in england at a top side maybe newcastle or a team of that caliber would be a better bet
June 11th, 2007 @ 19:11I pretty much agree with hugo and Stephen.
The guy is vastly overrated and doesn’t get any attention Spain outside of Spain. He has to score more then 15 goals in the in La Liga. If there is ONE Spanish striker that stands out, it would David Villa.
Conor: It has nothing to do with teams. Luca Toni scored 31 goals with Fiorentina, Forlan scored 26 goals with Villareal and so on.
June 11th, 2007 @ 19:22Wayne Rooney has never gotten over 15 goals in the EPL and yet he hasn’t been seen as overrated. Goals are important but people want to see a player working hard for the team. Look at RvN he got plenty of goals but didn’t fit in with United’s style. Torres seems to have the attributes of a premiership striker, pace, strength and decent finishing ability. Hope he goes to United if he leaves AM.
June 11th, 2007 @ 19:51Torres is majorly over-rated.
From the couple of games that I’ve seen of him, I don’t think his finishing is as good as it is made out to be.
Wouyld prefer SAF to give Rossi a chance instead.
June 11th, 2007 @ 20:08What? United fans saying that we don’t need Torres?
No offense, but what were you guys saying last summer?
June 11th, 2007 @ 20:31Karl u r right.
June 11th, 2007 @ 20:32But these are the Football Manager effects. You see some flashy attributes and you think this is the player? How can he be compared to Rooney for Red Devil’s sake. And did he really help his team? When they met the first serious opponent , France, both Spain and Torres were sleeping in the field. They just beat the Ukrainians and the referees helped for that unfair result.Get it over he is not that good player. After the Guardian stupidity the CM stupidity breaks into your head.Wake up!
Liam O´Kelly:
Well i know majority of the people here are Manchester United fans but i will say that Rooney is overrated to a certain extent. Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaka have all demonstrated why they are rated so highly but i dont feel that Rooney has. In my eyes, he is still a potential that could become something great one day. I just fail to see what he has demonstrated to be considered such a “world” class player.
To answer you question:
Because Rooney is not a true striker. Rooney is more of a support striker, no one relays on them to score 20+ a season.
I’m speaking as a person that has seen Torres play more times then i can count. The guy is overrated. I repeat, David Villa of Valencia is the best Spanish striker there is.
June 11th, 2007 @ 20:36I agree that torres is overrated. While his enthusiasm and work rate are tremendous, he is still to prove himself in front of goal on a consistent basis. I think united would be better off looking for a proven goal scorer, to work in front of rooney. Still it would be nice to have him as he has loads of potential.
June 11th, 2007 @ 16:59torres to united will be good not only in terms of goals though he may get only around 20 becoz he has not got more than that in la liga but also in advertisin a replacement for beckham eventhough no upto beckhams level
June 11th, 2007 @ 21:07Redondo, that is because all luca toni does is finish off the moves, like v.n, both good but comparing him to f.t is just stupid. And about forlan, thats when villareal were having a great season and riquelme was providing all the assists, plus thats just because he had one very good season, he’s not doing as well this season is he? And rooney is quite like torres, im sure if you checked you’d find out that torres is involved in alot of the build up play and i assume he gets a few assists too. But yeah david villa is the best player, but probably the most expensive.
June 11th, 2007 @ 21:13Torres good player dont need him because Giggs, Scholes and Anderson can all play upfront if need be.
June 11th, 2007 @ 21:19Please SAF get rid of Richardson(2mil) Smith(5mil) Solskjaer(retire)
And anyway its not as if bellamy kuyt or crouch scored 15 goals in the premiership this season
June 11th, 2007 @ 21:22I’ve been watching Rooney too, and he can score 30 in a season (not the league).
There’s a difference between being used as a support striker and just being a support striker. Rooney is good enough to play in RVN’s role, dammit.
But he does need to deliver on that potential – 23 goals in a season aren’t enough, right? Nope.
June 11th, 2007 @ 21:29Torres is playing for Atlético, who, whilst perpetual underachievers, have some pretty decent midfielders. It’s not as if he’s playing for Nastic… so to blame his lack of goals on his squad is simply too optimistic. Liverpool are welcome to him, but they won’t be getting a prolific goalscorer.
As Redondo put so succintly, Villa is by far and away the best Spanish striker out there. Personally I’d sooner have Tamudo than Torres for the prices quoted.
June 11th, 2007 @ 22:15Come on guys – Torres would be absolutely fantastic at Man United. His pace and touch alone will be enough at our club.
If we bring in a striker, it’ll be Tevez, Torres or Huntelaar, I’m pretty sure of. But given SAF’s previous statements about speed, Tevez and Torres could be the only targets. We might just be waiting to see if we can offload some of the deadweight (Richardson, Eagles, Smith, Silvestre) to make room in the squad – 4 in and 4 out will suit me nicely…:-)
June 11th, 2007 @ 22:34Well we’ll just have to wait and see how good he really is, if he comes to the premiership, but when rooney was younger he didnt score many goals either, the only reason he’s improving quicker than torres is because he plays with better players and he has experience of champions league football etc. Torres is good.
June 11th, 2007 @ 23:40i cant see him going anywhere this summe but if i had 2 pick between liverpool and united, id say hed go to liverpool, liverpool if full of spaniards he’d fit in well and enjoy his time in liverpool
June 12th, 2007 @ 00:34It’s very simple: Atletico Madrid won’t hold on to Torres, Torres will hold onto Atletico. There’s nothing we can do about that, although if he went to Utd, he would grow very quickly and be the best transfer of the seson. He would easily be a better buy than Berbatov. Younger, quicker, smarter, and he’s got a lot of years ahead of him, as he’s not the type who uses speed to his advantage, he’s the clever target-man with great tenhnique and incredible finishing, if he’d only go to Utd, this and next decade would be ours to take, of course working hard, but still, the next two decades would be ours!
Torres got so much potential, and he should know, he won’t win too much with Atletico. Torres stays with Atletico, because they believed in him, and now he’s trying to believe in them!
June 12th, 2007 @ 04:35Torres is a quality player playing in a mediocre side. Athletico are looking at an outside chance of European comeptition next year, so if they fail to achieve it, i wouldn’t be at all surprised if he left.
June 12th, 2007 @ 05:34I think he would be perfect for United, and would undoubtably suite their style of play. Could well bring the best out of him.
I don’t see how he could thrive at Liverpool however, given the fact that most Liverpool fans will admit they have no decent wing men, and someone like Torres, although flexible will exploit decent crosses all day.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Fergie had one more big spend in him, and he does have a good track record of getting his man.
liverpool will be better off signing david villa…
June 12th, 2007 @ 08:48he s got good ball control and is very creative ..n really fast..
n with rumors of bellamy leaving i think it maks sense to buy somone wit good speed….
Torres Torres Torres, yeah we’ve been talking about him at united for about a season and a half, personally i’d like to see him go to ‘pool they seriously need him more than we do,He’s all along said no to all prospects of comin to united so why bother with him,his dumb ass will never see CL football. If Villa is available i think SAF should go for him,and by God if next season we wouldn’t be going for the quad!!!I can it now in the headlines 24 may 2008 UNITED WIN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TO COMPLETE AN UNPRECEDENTED QUADRUPLE.
June 12th, 2007 @ 12:00I’m sorry to say this but, no appologies for this: Anyone who claims Torres is overrated. Hasn’t been watching football long enough. Anyone who claims Villa is better than Torres needs there head examined. Torres is a fantastic player. Bottom line. The shit he plays with at Atletico yet he manages to keep above 15 goals a season in the league should say it all, under rubbish management. Besides, Goals are not the be all and end all about striker or we would crucify Rooney for not getting enough goals. Or men like Kezmann who had a better record that Rudd at PSV would be a world star by now Torres would score 20 a season easily at a side like United. So his having not been a top scorer in Spain is irrelevant.
He deserves to be at a European giant. Who ever fails to get him amongst the big clubs will surely regret. I sure hope United sign him. They would suit him best.
June 12th, 2007 @ 12:04Fernando Torres is the right man[striker] if Ferguson ever wants to sign a striker who can deliver goals @ every chance he gets.why can’t Fergie hurry up b4 other parties become interested and time runs out?we are focusing on winning trophies and Torres can help us do it,we are a big club worldwide.A big striker[Torres] needs a big club[Manchester United] and Fergie has to do it by signing Torres,he has to persuade him that Manchester United is the right place to be.
June 12th, 2007 @ 12:53firstly i think that torres needs to move away from an underachieving AM who to tbh have enough quality to be challenging for la liga with players like Kun’ Agüero and maxi. he is in a comfert zone there. he always knows that he will get into the team and i feel that he needs to leave to develop his career.but i think he will stay there for one more year.
and i dont knnow how people are making judgements a bout his ability and saying his overrated?? he is a spain international and plus how often do you watch him play?? Athletico are only on sky sports usualy once every month and the spanish friendly arnt televised.
and at the moment in la liga he has 14 goals the same as villa.
June 12th, 2007 @ 14:04Torres should go to Manchester united because of sir alex ferguson is the best tactical and higher rate of scoring goal in the season. He will success in manchester united and become a legend in there.
June 12th, 2007 @ 15:01would take torres at man u but not for anything like 20+ mil. He is unproven in prem and I think would not be prolific. 10 mil or less might be worth a looksee. Would prefer Tevez, Villa, Eto etc. though
I like way Tevez plays with his teammates, skilful and sharp and would fit in nicely with the quick play of Rooney and Ronaldo etc. Only problem would be a lack of height in attack then.
Eto has talent no doubt but might be too selfish / too much of an ego and we don’t want to risk the dressing room spirit which was quite evident last year, even with Ronnie’s head. Don’t think we can fit another bighead in the team
June 12th, 2007 @ 15:25This guy seems so overated. Look what happened with Morientes when he was at Pool. He had a pretty decent record but really struggled in the premiership. Torres does not even come close to Morientes with regards to his current record in Spain.
June 12th, 2007 @ 17:54would much prefer a fit Louis Saha. Now you talking. Big, strong , great movement, scores goals , brings others into play… i figure we already got a better version of Torres. If we want to sign a striker then rather get Tevez. He will provide a bit of magic that can change a game a lessons the burden on Ronaldo to always get us out of a jam.
Justin: Morientes was never really that good, he was good at headers and was fairly good at finishing, torres is faster, more skillful, and better at running with the ball, morientes was too slow on the ball:) But yea everything you said about saha up there is true, but it seems he’ll never have an injury free seaon, and he might not even start in our team anymore… And about tevez lifting the burden on ronaldo…EXACTLY…but rooney might do that next season, just like ronaldo did, he could have an unbelievable season.
June 12th, 2007 @ 18:42I have to say i don’t believe Torres will go to Liverpool or United this year, which means i can’t see him moving again!
I think he would be a great signing for United but then again so would Saviola or Huntelaar and for half the price of Torres which after the amount we have spent this summer would be 2 more realistic targets!
June 12th, 2007 @ 21:15Justin, Morientes was bloody slow and not as physically well built as Torres. And he played at a side competing for a league trophy regularly. To compare them is nothing but stupid.
Besides Tores is way better than Saha. Everyone loves to make noise about E’too. But even he in his Mallorca days didn’t have a record better than Torres’ at AM. Yet we all know Saha is not in his league:
Torres stats at Atletico

2006/2007 Atlético de Madrid España Primera División 33 14 4 1

June 12th, 2007 @ 22:012003-2004 Real Mallorca 32 17 2 0
2002-2003 Real Mallorca 30 14 6 5
2001-2002 Real Mallorca 30 6 1 1
2000-2001 Real Mallorca 28 11 5 2
1999-2000 Real Mallorca 13 6 0 0
I’d be up for trying out Huntelaar too. Dutch players often adapt quite well to the prem.
Saha can be great but his head doesn’t seem to be right and Fergie seems to have run out of patience with him. Shame, but if he can’t motivate himself to play for Man U then I don’t know where he will?
June 13th, 2007 @ 05:04I thought Rooney and Larsson got on superbly so i feel rooney gets along better with a better finisher so in that respect i probably would want huntelaar but i feel we have a star in the making in rossi and i still feel berbatov is the man and the best bit is berbatov is not one that relies on pace and as we all know pace goes with age so i can see berbatov playing for another 10 years. i feel if u offload heinze(rather see the back of silvestre), smith, richardson, bardsley take into account the bonus we would recieve thanks to Ruud and the £6m installment chelsea owe us(obi mikel) acquiring berbatov does not seem difficult.
the thing with Torres is i dont think he will improve the team on the field. i dont know how much money fergie has to spend but if reports are true that he can go for £15m then why not
June 13th, 2007 @ 19:43You dont think Torres wll improve the team on the field?
June 15th, 2007 @ 16:23Have you actually watched him play?
Torres ould be a hit at United, no doubt. He has the pace and touch to compliment the other attacking players perfectly.
I would prefer Torres over Tevez simply because we have our own Tevez already, only we call him Rooney.
Rooney-Torres-Rossi-Saha/Smith is not a bad starting point.
Basically, all is can say i that if Torres comes to Liverpool it will be worth while and the 25 million will be spent well by the BEST ENGLISH team in europe. He will be wasting his career at Man U. And u have to admit that he will suite the fast pace of Liverpool, and the ever lasting fact that he will reach the final of the champions league and win.
June 22nd, 2007 @ 07:37HA! ‘fast pace of Liverpool’, liverpool probably play at the slowest pace in the premiership! they just pass it across te back, and then occasionally hit a long ball up to crouch or kuyt, or pass to gerrard to do everything for ya!
June 22nd, 2007 @ 15:23Fast pace and Liverpool just don’t fit in the same sentence. Liverpool play the most controlling game in the league and are actually afraid of fast paced games… or at least their manager is. Plus there are no really fast players in Liverpool’s line-up. Gerrard is quick, but most of his runs start too far back to be dangerous.
And please don’t mention Kewell or Pennant as fast players. Yes they can run pretty fast, but the game slows down, when they have the ball.
June 22nd, 2007 @ 16:20Torres will not stay in Athletico this year, even if he stays, sooner or later he will leave. Athletico has not archeived good results and one good player will not limit his talent no matter how loyal he is.
I agree with the writer that Torres’ detination maybe either ManU or Liverpool. But I think AC Milan may take a step forward to bring in a long-needed striker. ManU may offer higher salary. AC Milan with higer transfer fee and better condition for Champions. Though I hope he will go to ManU, but I am very sure he is not going to liverpool.
The manager of Liverpool is good, but in every competition Liverpool had failed to get the Champions(except Champions League few years ago), and they have a rotation policy, so he will not get many chances. In Manu or AC Milan, he will have full appearence.
Torres:
ManU~~~~~~~25mil-27mil~~~In need~~~~~More appearence~~~high salary~~~~~huge potential in winning a lot of competitions
AC Milan~~~27mil~~~~~~~~~Very In need~More appearence~~~
medium salary~~champions league/Italian League
Liverpool~~23-25mil~~~~~~Not needed~~Rotate~~~~~medium salary~~~~~champions league
Chelsea~~~~25-30mil~~~~~~In need~~~~~medium appearence~~very high salary~~medium potential in winning lots of competitions
Real Madrid~~27-35mil~~~~In need~~~~~high appearence~~~very high salary~~Spanish League
Remarks: Torres’ chances of going to Real Madrid will be very small, cause he won’t want to play against his loyal club or any other Spanish clubs, his playing style is very good in England and a little bit without experienced in Italy
Conclusion: the chances of him going is:
ManU>Stay>Liverpool>AC Milan>Arsenal>Chelsea>Real Madrid>other clubs
I am >65% sure
June 22nd, 2007 @ 17:19JEREMY ANOTHER MANUTD FAN
June 22nd, 2007 @ 17:32please…I respect truth only. Not only Manu.
June 22nd, 2007 @ 17:57Fernando Torres Is A Gr8 Playa With Alot Of Ability. He Is Stil Young And Can Stil Learn Alot Of Things. Wel As I Am A Liverpool Fan I Wuld Like To See Torres At Anfield This Coming Season. I Think It Would Be A Very Wise Move For Him And Although Some Players Take A Couple Of Years To Get Used To English Football In The Premiership, I Dont Think He Will Take Long To Know The Style Of Football In The Premiership. I Fink Comin To The Premiership At A Young Age Wil Improve His Football Alot In The Coming Future As The Premiership Is By Far The Hardest And The Vest Leauge In The World. Rafa Wil Not Rotate Torres As He Wil Be A Key Player To The Club And I Fink The Style That We (Liverpool) Play Wil Suite Fernando Torres. If He Does Move To Liverpool He Wil Be Very Happy And Have A Gr8 Tym Playing For The Mighty Reds. Bring On Tha Spaniards!
