It must be terrible for this £50,000 a week professional to hear the people who paid his wages for so long take the piss out of him. Redknapp said: "Nobody likes being called filthy names and hearing other filthy abuse. It's not right. What has that got to do with coming to a game? For a start there are kids there."

That's right Harry, because professional footballers are superb role models for kids aren't they? And you're right, nobody likes being called names. But then again, not many of us have the luxury of being in a high paid profession where you don't have to take responsibility for anything.

Witness last November's England crunch match against Croatia on a wet Wednesday night. You could see all that Campbell, Lampard and Gerrard wanted to do was to get the match over with and go back to their million pound mansions.

OK Sol, they're chanting that you're gay and that you indulge in homosexual activities. Is that really 'filthy'? Just grow up and recognise just how much these people put into the game that has made you a very wealthy man.

FDS that's a really good shout that point 2, players can't retaliate no. But the thing is, Football does strange things to people. It has the power to unite the nation or divide the nation, that's what makes football so fucking mindblowing, because for them 2 hours on a Saturday you've got about 75000 mates. And if you're 2-0 down, fans will do anything to try and help their team get an edge. That's what I think abuse has started out as. But for me, as I said, as long as it's within the confines of a stadium then not a problem. For example after the 3-0 derby win for Everton at Goodison, we were walking round town all day just getting tanked up and we walk into this bar and none other than Timmy Cahill is sitting in front of us with his entourage. Did we scream our heads off? No, we shook his hand, took some pictures and he bought us all a pint. Confronting a player minding his own business on the street and severely insulting him, absolutely no excuse at all. Fans need to remember the players rule, what goes on on the pitch stays there.

Also about the kids, its a parental thing once again. If you hear your kid swear or give someone the finger, beat the shit out of him til he stops. But that's a parental thing, not a football thing. Its a pretty poor parent who swears in front of an infant child.

Shaun, why is it inappropriate for a 10 year old kid to stick up his middle finger, and yet appropriate for grown men to throw abuse and act like fuckwits?

There are a number of reason why the abusing players is wrong:
1. they're fellow human beings and deserve a measure of respect
2. it's cowardly because the players can't retaliate
3. it spoils the game for other fans
4. the spectacle of grown men acting tough to impress their peers is pathetic. What makes it worse is point 2.
5. it distracts everyone from the actual game of football
6. it influences kids (like young Dirk Kuyt?)

I could go on, but I doubt I'd convince anyone.

The point is that they're paid to be footballers, not to be a scapegoat for a fan's pathetic, miserable life. I never understood why someone would get his jollies out of screaming abuse at strangers (and pay a fortune for the pleasure to do so). Sol Campbell's right; there is a line of decency that some fans cross.

The problem with the abuse on footballers is that is spills over into real life. Think of the children.

If football becomes the playground of the 18+, soon our children only be able to enjoy cricket and tennis.

If he's underperforming, then yes, he deserves criticism, but where do you draw the line where booing turns into personal abuse?

They're being paid 35k a week because that's how the football market is in England. How does that make it ok for someone to go up to Sol Campbell and abuse his mother (theoretically speaking)?
