The FA Cup final is one of the most important games in the English footballing calender, with the FA Cup the oldest club cup competition in the world. Manchester United are bidding to become the joint most successful club in the history of the FA Cup, with victory over Crystal Palace to move them onto twelve titles with fellow Premier League side Arsenal.

Palace will be appearing in the second ever FA Cup final. Their first was against United in 1990, with the Red Devils triumphing in a replay after the first match ended in a 3-3 draw.

The win marked the first of five FA Cups for legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

An FA Cup winners medal is the only domestic honour missing from the collections of United captain Wayne Rooney and midfielder Michael Carrick, while a win for Palace would see them pick up their first major honour in their 110-year history.

Domestic silverware is not the only thing up for grabs, with a place in the 2016/17 Europa League also part of the winner’s haul. However, Manchester United finishing fifth in the Premier League this year which means they are already guaranteed a place in the Europa League group stage next season. If they win their 12th FA Cup, sixth placed Southampton will be given the automatic 2016/17 Europa League group stage spot, with West Ham in seventh afforded entry to the third qualifying round for the European tournament.

If Crystal Palace win their first ever FA Cup, they will qualify for the Europa League group stage, with Southampton entering the third qualifying round and West Ham missing out altogether.
