Nothing has been the same since the terraces went. In the case of Utd. the ground capacity has also contributed and of course rival fans jump on the bandwagon with their chants. The other factors you mention are all relevant but I think the seating factor is the biggest. People feel less 'together' and more inhibited, especially when surrounded by a group of Japanese tourists as I experienced a few years back!
