The upcoming match will be the seventh Europa League final since the competition’s rebranding from the UEFA Cup, with Sevilla bidding to become the first team in history to win three consecutive titles. The Spanish side beat FC Dnipro in last year’s showpiece event and defeated Portuguese giants Benfica in 2014. They face a Liverpool side who knocked out this season’s favourites Borussia Dortmund in an extraordinary quarter final, as well as Villarreal in the semis.
Since arriving in October, Jurgen Klopp has transformed Liverpool, leading them to the League Cup final in February and eighth in the Premier League table – a respectable finish considering their early season woes under previous manager Brendan Rodgers.
They progressed to the knockout rounds of the Europa League as Group B winners ahead of Sion, Rubin Kazan and Bordeaux, seeing off German side Augsburg in the last 32.
Liverpool dumped arch-rivals Manchester United out in the last 16 as well as seeing off both Klopp’s old side Dortmund and Villarreal to reach the final.
Sevilla entered the Europa League in the round of 32 after finishing third in their Champions League group, with both Manchester City and Juventus progressing at their expense.
They dispensed with Molde, FC Basel, 2012 finalists Athletic Bilbao and 2009 UEFA Cup winners Shakhtar Donetsk on their way to the final.
