Euro 2008 Roundup (03 June 08): Cannavaro out, Vieira in doubt

There’s not a lot going on in the news today, but of the few headlines, there is one pretty significant one, and it’s not good news if you’re an Italy fan.

Group A

Switerland coach Koebi Kuhn had a family emergency to deal with on Monday, as his wife suffered an epileptic attack, which delays Kuhn’s ability to meet up with his squad at their training facility. The good news is that his wife is fine, and he should also be able to link up with his team today.

Meanwhile, Swiss playmaker Tranquillo Barnetta is racing to be fit for the co-hosts’ opener against the Czech Republic after an ankle injury last month. His presence is important to Switzerland’s hopes to make it past the group phase, so hopefully he’ll be fit come Saturday.

The earth can start to revolve again, as Cristiano Ronaldo is just fine after having ice taped around his right ankle after Portugal’s first training session. As for his club future? Well, that’s for the transfer roundup.

Group B

There’s still no decision on who will start in goal for co-host Austria when they play Croatia on Sunday, as coach Josef Hickersberger said Monday that he has a team in mind, but that he wants to wait and see how this week’s training sessions go before announcing his final decision.

Group C

Italy suffered a major blow on Monday, as veteran defender Fabio Cannavaro tore ankle ligaments in a collision with teammate Giorgio Chellini, which will rule him out of Euro 2008.

France also has some injury news, as Patrick Vieira hurt his left ankle in training on Friday and could miss at least the opener against Romania next Monday.

AC Milan’s Mathieu Flamini was called up by Raymond Domenech just in case Vieira is unable to play against Romania.

So, even though Cannavaro is out of the competition, and England isn’t anywhere to be seen, there’s still plenty of reasons for you to watch, especially if you’re American (if you’re an American college student, #4 is right up your alley).

Also, if you want to make your predictions who’ll finish where in Austria/Switzerland, check this out (you can win stuff, so I suggest you enter!), and if you need some help, here are SL’s predictions.
