Very interesting piece NJ and excellent questions addressed. I think the ‘old issues’ (WW11)are fading with time and the evolution of the generations. More and more, as you suggest, the rivalries are caused by more recent ‘battles’ on the field and grudges resulting from elimination in competitions.
The presence of players from the team you support in the opposition line-up most definitely is a factor too. We’re all affected by our biases and loyalties and its an ever changing picture as the new generations roll in.
