England 5-0 Andorra - pointlessness wins the day

Written by Ahmed Bilal

This was not a question of England winning or slipping up - it was an opportunity for McClaren’s side to look good and to build up on the PR exercise that Stevo has followed so diligently since taking over from Eriksson.

England, for their 6-0, 4-0 and 5-0 wins in their last 3 non-World Cup matches, are a team that click in patches and still have the worrying tendency to be troubled by a quality attacking side.

There were two embarrasing things to come out of England’s 5-0 win over Andorra:

  • We scored 1 goal less than Scotland (who beat Faroe Islands 6-0)
  • That FIFA is still allowing hopeless sides such as Andorra and Faroe Islands to be fodder for pointless competitive matches.

I didn’t get to watch the match, so here’s the coverage from the Guardian:

Paul Wilson on the turkey-shoot that these matches inevitably turn into.

Amy Lawrence with the match report.

Paul Wilson again on Crouch’s tranformance into a (whisper it) class striker.

Hopefully Macedonia on Wednesday will be a bigger challenge, although I doubt it.
