Benfica winger Eduardo Salvio has been attracting interest from a host of Premier League sides.

Manchester City and Tottenham are said to be among the favourites for his signature this summer. Reports have even emerged of City making a €35M bid for the 23-year old.

Salvio, an Argentine international, has been making a name for himself this season. The right-winger scored 10 goals in 29 Primeira Liga games during the 2012/13 campaign.

Upon signing for the Portugese side from La Liga outfit Athletico Madrid in 2012, Salvio has made 89 appearances in all competitions, scoring 23 goals. He’s regarded as one of Europe’s hottest prospects, and many are expecting him to leave the side this summer to play at the top level.

The Premier League looks the most likely of destinations as Manchester City and Tottenham are two sides who are very keen in the Argentine. Manchester United were previously linked with Salvio too.

Tottenham manager Andres Villas-Boas has been keeping tabs on the 23-year old, and feels he will push his current winger Aaron Lennon for a starting place. The London side are lacking in adequate cover, after a disappointing season for Gylfi Sigurdsson and Clint Dempsey who could be sold this summer.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has admitted he has been looking at Salvio as a potential addition to the side, but with the Citizens already having Samir Nasri, Scott Sinclair, Jesus Navas, and James Milner who can all play in his position, many feel the side already have too much competition for a starting place.

Benfica are bracing themselves for more offers from a number of sides around Europe this summer, but will only let Salvio go for the right price. Benfica manager Jorge Jesus is worried a number of his top performers of last season could all be leaving the side and leaving him light on options for the 2013/14 league campaign.

One Comment to Eduardo Salvio could be on his way to the Premier League

  1. I’m somewhat confused by the following line in the article: “… many are expecting him to leave the side this summer to play at the top level”. I would think Benfica might take that as a slight insult! Benfica are currently in Europe’s top-10 clubs and will be in pot 1 for the Champions League group-stage draw. Man. City don’t need Salvio, unless they’re just trying to weaken other Champions League outfits!! Spurs will be limited to the Europa League this season. Playing in the Premier League is attractive, but so is being in the Champions League – oh, and he’ll be at the World Cup next year, will England? Big numbers are being bandied around for “Toto” because, simply put, Benfica don’t want to sell him – only if someone offers “silly money”. Whatever, if he does move to England he’ll more than quadruple his salary overnight, enabling him to buy more Ferraris or whatever.
