Ecuador Top Group A

Written by Ahmed Bilal. Tagged: World Cup 2006

A classy, professional display by Ecuador saw Costa Rica bundled out of the World Cup with a match to spare - and sets up a Germany vs Ecuador clash on the 20th that will determine who tops Group A (and potentially, who England will play in the second round).

The most interesting aspect for me in this is that now that Ecuador are assured to reach the second round, how will they fare if they top Group A (draw or beat Germany - draw more likely), they will meet one of Sweden, T & T and Paraguay. With Ecuador playing this well, it will be really, really interesting to see that match.

Can Ecuador be the World Cup’s first surprise package and move on to the quarter finals? They have to negotiate Germany first, and a draw is quite possible - Ecuador are excellent down the flanks and Germany’s right-back is a bit suspect.

And if Germany and England square up in the second round? I’d still be rooting for England, but as for predictions we’ll have to see today’s match - up in less than half an hour.
