Do Manchester United fans want Valencia?
Wigan’s Antonio Valencia and Wilson Palacios have been linked with Manchester United several times over the summer and while the transfer window is closed we’re still hearing of United’s supposed interested in the players.
Yesterday there were rumours that Manchester United were preparing an 18m bid for the players, today we have Dave Whelan telling the Wigan Observer that Manchester United have been watching Valencia for a while.
From what I’ve seen of the two players they won’t be walking into the starting XI by any means and would fight for a place on the bench. Perhaps Ferguson sees Valencia as one for the future?
What do you guys think – are Valencia and Palacios United material?

Actually i think both can walk into the starting line up but have to fight to keep their places. Palacios can play more if Carrick is out while Valencia has a far better chance on the wings. With Ronaldo guaranteed a place on one of the wing, Valencia has more chance of filling the other wing. At the moment, Park is our first choice winger ahead of Nani but Park is kinda prone to injury while Nani is inconsistent. This might see Valencia start more games in the absence of Park.
October 8th, 2008 @ 14:54no they won’t…sir alex…they cannot ne ones for future we have too many young players=inbalance
October 8th, 2008 @ 14:57They ar both fantastic playas, and i can see anderson vieing with palacios, and valencia vieing with park,it’d b a great honour 4 any of’em to don the red jersey anyway.one united.
October 8th, 2008 @ 15:28Valencia would be to replace Senor Ronseal when he goes off to join ‘Mr Potato Ed’ van Nistelroy next summer.
Palacios would be to replace Hargreaves when SAF recognizes that he has become the new Saha.
October 8th, 2008 @ 15:38mmm… nope… can’t see them… maybe valencia, buy not palacios.
October 8th, 2008 @ 18:31Yes they will Bob — The Winker and Saha-rgreaves will both be gone by this time next year
October 8th, 2008 @ 18:49Anyone see Wilson Palacios play against Middlesborough. Was unstoppable. He is outstanding and made it onto the Setanta “Team of the Week” with players like Rooney, Torres and Lampard. He dominated the match and I have been watching him for a while after Manchester United first claimed interest in Palacios last season (after Wigan vs Manchester United match). True quality and still very young. Looks like the best signing to take over Hargreaves. Amazing player and I have no doubt he would be in the starting XI. By the way, don’t mention the “too young” argument. He has over 50 caps for Honduras (amazing number) and has plenty of experience. Definitely a quality purchase. I would like to see Ferguson buy him. Fortify the Reds midfield or wings (he can play both). As for Valencia, I have watched him too. Except for his amazing goal against Middlesborough, I see him as only an exceptional player.
October 8th, 2008 @ 19:39Both are great players. Too good to be playing for a non top 5 team. These are the kind of players who should be playing in Europe every season. United can use both of them as their utility players as both of them are consistent and Valencia’s speed is incredible. If United don’t move in I can see Rafa, Ince or Hughes moving in on them very soon. Much sooner than one can expect.
October 9th, 2008 @ 04:49Honestly, I don’t see where they would fit unless Fergie decides to sell some midfielders. I don’t really see him doing that at the moment because we have a lot of proven quality in midfield.
Take Fletcher. He just keeps improving season after season. Anderson is young and still has room to grow which says a lot because he’s a very promising midfielder. We have Hargreaves who is one of my favorite midfielders ever. He’s injury prone but when he’s fit he makes a huge difference to the team. Then there’s Scholes. Probably my favorite midfielder ever. He’s in my opinion the best player at the club at the moment.
Fergie may be looking at bringing in one of them when Scholes eventually hangs up his boots but that could be another 1 or 2 years from now so I don’t really think we need those players at the moment.
October 9th, 2008 @ 05:44ooh, and I forgot Carrick. Not good of me. I haven’t seen him play in a while so I can be forgiven but Carrick has grown in stature since he came to us. He’ll grow more in time and become a first team regular. He too is one my favorite midfielders ever.
Holy crap, what a midfield. Scholes, Carrick, Anderson, Hargreaves, Fletcher. We may have the most exciting forward line in the world but we also have probably one the strongest midfields in the world!
October 9th, 2008 @ 05:48It will be a major surprise to me if Ferguson buys ANYONE for quite some time. The squad is more than adequate and there’s a limit to how much money you can spend on bench warmers, especially in the current climate.
October 9th, 2008 @ 05:59I don’t know… I’m not sure Ferguson will buy anyone either, but I do think we could use Palacios. I’d be happy if we made room for him by benching Saha-rgeaves – I think he’s about out of gas, and doesn’t contribute anything special to the attack. There’s something to be said for experience in the middle third, but I’ll take a more active and gifted midfielder like Palacios any day. Valencia, though: I don’t think we really do, or will have any really use for him. I hear people trying to suggest that he would replace Park Ji Sung and take the wing opposite Ronaldo, but these people clearly haven’t seen the Man U offense work a whole lot. We don’t really use two wings, in the sense that the formation is designed to give Ronaldo optimal freedom, and thus not to constrict him to play on one wing exclusively. I think another attacking winger in the mold of Valencia would really negatively impact Ronaldo’s creativity, and prevent him from being comfortable on the pitch, and using as much of it as he sees fit. So that’s a definite no to Valencia, but a maybe for Palacios to replace Saha-rgreaves – could shoot some life much needed aggression to the middle third.
October 9th, 2008 @ 07:00Agreed with Brian, although we could see one or two players leaving this winter…
