I sorta understand how Donadoni kept Toni in the squad in hopes of him getting that one goal, but looking at the way things were going for him, it really seems that even the heavens were against him.

He should have, at some point, took a gamble with Boriello and see what's what.

Regarding Toni, all that the Bayern striker was missing is one goal to "unblock" himself, so-to-speak. That was the only reason Donadoni kept him on the entire time: the "hope" that that goal would come, and that Luca's full goalscoring power would be unleashed.

Regarding the rest, I pretty much agree with your assessments. The defense was terrible against Netherlands, but picked it up on the way. The absence of Fabio Cannavaro weighed in a lot to be honest: everyone thought the Real Madrid's center-back injury would undoubtedly affect the team's performance, but I don't think anyone was ready to bet it would be quite so devastating for Italy. Thankfully, Giorgio Chiellini became a sort of Cannavaro nº2 (he was absolutely amazing vs. Spain).

What players to expect for the future? You've named a few, but the biggest ones we'll see wearing an Azzurri shirt over the next few years include:

Fabiano Santacroce (great center-back at Napoli)

Sebastian Giovinco (offensive mid now back at Juve... did wonders with Empoli last year)

Mario Balotelli (great prospect for a striking spot, plays at Inter)

Giuseppe Rossi (needs to introduction)

and maybe (just maybe):

Amauri

And do expect Australia to come back for World Cup 2010 stronger, spirited and with a bigger desire to triumph. Not to forget the 'luck' factor, ability to controversially beat teams. Forza Oz
