Did Chelsea make a mistake in buying Deco?
It’s official - Chelsea have brought in Deco from Barcelona for a sum reported to be 10m Euros. He’s the first of the trio of players Barcelona were determined to sell (Ronaldinho seems Milan bound, while there’s no serious news yet on Eto’o) and despite his problems last season Chelsea seem to have brought in an excellent player.
Thing is, Chelsea are already central-midfield-heavy as it is. Makelele is on for one more season at best, Ballack is in great form, Essien is there for years to come and Obi Mikel is definitely one for the future. And this is before you talk about the Chelsea vice-captain Frank Lampard and soon-to-be-discarded midfielder Steve Sidwell.
So where will Deco fit in?
His arrival would means the departure of at least 2, possibly 3 midfielders, and while Sidwell is the most likely one to leave, it’s Lampard and not Makelele who is being touted as the next departure from Chelsea.
In my view, Chelsea should have given Lampard the same wages they have Terry and Ballack on and kept him onside instead of going out and buying Deco. Deco is a fine player but if he’s coming in to replace Lampard in a 3 or 5 man midfield it’s going to be tough going (for starters Chelsea’s build-up play will be a tad bit slower).
What do you guys think? Have Chelsea made a mistake in buying Deco and should Kenyon and co do everything to keep Lampard or should they just let him go (with Inter reported to be the most likely destination)?

It’s hard to say, if Lampard goes then I think it is a great signing. We can’t have too many similar players playing in the middle. Essien will be the only one who will run forward with it so to have Deco, Ballack and Lampard would make life, egos and selection difficult. I do think all this about Deco having a dip in form is a load of rubbish tho, he was injured and Barcelona as a team lost their way, this was not down to his dip. Bring it on I say. The big question tho is Drogba going to stay? The type of forward Chelsea have this season will have a major influence on how we play under Scolari.
Its not a mistake. Scolari has worked before with Deco. Remember that even Zola came in his thirties and still became a legend.
hu cares … chelsea is not gonna win anythin anyway
It’s certainly is crowded in the Chelsea midfield, and doubtful you’ll see Deco and Frank on the field at the same time. If Lampard is unhappy and won’t be content under Scolari, maybe selling him off to Inter isn’t a bad move.
Undoubtedly an excellent player but seems a slightly strange signing to me. What Chelsea need are wingers, strikers who can actually score goals and a bit of strengthening at the back. The midfield seemed pretty solid already.
I agree with graham for the most part but i hear they are in negotiations with robihno so i guess they also realise that wingers are a problem. In terms of defence chelsea really doesnt have any problems but they have a player returning from psv to bolster an already strong defence
No, and it’s not like they’re paying that much either.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Deco playing farther out to the flank though.
No room for Makelele or Obi Mikel, though.
i think its a brilliant buy for chelski. IMO deco is a much better player than lampard so ther is no problems there. it shouldn’t be too crowded because lampard will most likely go to inter, sidwell who hasn’t got the quality for chelski will leave and makelele must no be allowed a first team spot because of his age. this leaves deco, ballack, mikel and essien. chelski are a lot stronga wit deco and i hope he plays bad or else man u could be in trouble.
Although i am a man utd faithfull, i believe the signing of Deco is a bold step in the right direction. Lampard can go as well as Sidwell so that Deco can control the midfield.
it doesnt matter who chealsea sign, we have the money to buy whoever we want n so y not have an extra midfielder incase of injuries. Lampard wont leave, if her does, not a good choice. Mourinho doesnt care about winning, all he wants to do is make chealse as bad as possible (for sacking him) and if he signs Carvallaho, Lamps n Drog, chelsea will just have more money to buy more gd players. so its a win win situation for Scolari
Well Abinand , that was a really intelligent comment…..
As a Chelsea fan I would hate to Lampard go.. I beleive he is Chelsea 100%, but if he goes , he knows the true fans will always welcome him back to the bridge just like we do with all the ex Chelsea greats…
Frank Lampard is my favorite player, not only in Chelsea but in football in general. He is the reason that i became a fan of Chelsea in the first place.I think that even if he doesn’t always seem to be the best player,or the min scorer,i like to think of him as the spinal cord of Chelsea. As much as i like Deco too, i am most certain, that if lapard leaves,Deco wont be able to fill his gap 100%
I think tht Frank lampard shud not go because in the past Frank lampard has been a good player for chelaea just because hes gettin aa bit oldr now he can still play sum gud football and i dont think Deco could match that eventhow Deco is still a gud player.
who cares? ya, lampard was fantastic once in his life time but now that is gone…….so who cares if he moves to inter or locomotive moscow
Lampard and drogbaa and even old ric carvalho must leave. the team formation should be like this
