Dealing with rising ticket prices

Written by Ahmed Bilal

I think we can all agree that:

  1. Ticket prices are getting higher and therefore farther out of the reach of the common fan.
  2. Matchday revenues form a major component of a club’s income, and despite the age of takeovers clubs need money to be competitive in football, Premiership or otherwise.

The idea is to find viable alternatives for clubs to make money while still keeping football accessible for fans.

I’ll go first:

Option #1

Allow standing sections in football grounds and charge less for them - more revenues (as more people can fit into the stadium) plus more people will be able to afford tickets.

Standing sections, if built with proper security guidelines and managed correctly, are NOT dangerous. Studies have been conducted in this area that support this conclusion.

Option #2

Clubs should develop alternative sources of revenue - to some it may seem untraditional that football clubs should be dealing with anything other than football, but the mark of long-term financial success is diversification in your revenue sources.

It’s your turn - how do you think the issue of rising ticket prices can be solved?

  1. You cant have standing at Stadiums now, there all-seater now because of Heysel and Hillsbrough.

My team Arsenal have the most expensive tickets in the Premiership dispite were not even the current champions and have the second largest stadium in the league, In 2006-07 I think its was 40-100 Pounds for a ticket, Which is very expenive, Now i think that the days of a kid who hasnt got a lot of kmoney and is quite poor and lives and breaths there club going to a match is gone..Now half the seats at the Emirates goes to our sponsors, realistically no more fans can get to the arsenal games than Highbury

What I can suggest is reserves football, usually free to enter exept West Ham ressy games are around 3 pounds because they players they have in the reserves are a high quality, Cheap food and you might see your lcubs coach or even a recovering player from injury could be in the game…
Or just the Div 2 could be okay if you are into that….

My soloution…I dont know, Its the way things go, we cant help it, like everything Football is a way of getting money, half the people in football are foreign and know nothing about the game..But now Football is about making Millions….

I don’t really support it, but… Player salary caps?

  3. We have salary caps here in the A-League (Australias national Football League) and its a really annoying thing because youre allowed only one player outside the salary cap, Sydney FC coulda had Dwight Yorke and Makelele but could only sign Yorke.
Recently Melbourne Victory couldnt sign brazillian star Fred because of teh stupid cap…

Its a bad idea and too see it intruduced would be quite strange altough Real, Chelsea and United etc. wouldnt be so good!

  4. cant see standing terraces being allowed but i guess the only avenue to make more money is by aiming to increase advertising revenue e.g. liverpool aiming to raise 100 mil by selling naming rights of their new stadium… get the money outta the corporates who ultimately are the cause of raised prices

  5. Rising ticket prices is a symptom in our society. Media barons by way of propaganda and leverage are conspiring to occupy peoples’ minds to channel people’s emotional energies in way people become pawns in service of a prefabricated plastic society. This is a clear indication that capitalism in the last stage of its life cycle while gagging the intellects is attempting to force masses for a last push to “globalisation” where globalisation is facing with stiff resistance from citizens of the world because the nature of diverse geopolitics has become an obstacle of immense proportion in way of globalisation. politicians have thus changed strategy and through back door entry (so to speak), football have become a potent tool for globalisation, to the extent that every one is directly been recruited to invest his/her emotional energy and time to follow football and any thing remotely associated with it. That is why useless people like Beckham and the likes earn staggering amount of money, and average people are forced to fund their expensive wages through rising ticket prices. Dealing with rising football ticket prices requires a radical change to the way our contemporary societies are managed and run.

  6. Carlsberg were rejected, the name Carlsberg Stadium was only willing to give 70 Mil for 10 years.

Apperently Mansion (current spurs sponsors) are interested in the Stanley Park naming rights, But Mansion Stadium? Dont think so

I’m going to see United in October and it’s costing me 75 euro(50 pounds)for a ticket when the last time I went 3 years ago it was something like 30 pounds that is just a huge rise and will drive fans away.

and with regards to the standiing areas in Ireland the biggest stadium Croke Park has a standing area and it’s the best place to be in the stadium during a match(Gaelic football and hurling).

  9. to watch manchester united games it will cost me only £10 starting this season, but that is for under 16’s which is good for me. but i think they raised the adult prices to compensate though.

standing areas- i dont think this is a good idea as u will get the odd nutter causing trouble in the stand. standing areas are only good for getting our own back against the italians! only joking we’re not like that ;)

The ticket prices shouldn’t be increasing. Every club in England has too much money, even the crap teams that don’t win anything such as West Ham, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, etc.

Haha, Speaking of Gaelic we can’t play Ireland caus you reckon its too rough and we start to many fights..

    Kyle
Yeah it’s really fair when yousend a team full of weight lifters to chokeslam the clearly more skillful players to the ground and by the way a lot of Gaelic teams have really beefed up recently and I hope they bring the international rules matches back ’cause I used to really like them.

Kyle- shut up or I’ll make you. Its not our fault that the Aussie players are mentally retarded and start fights with the Irish players. And stick to the subject of ticket prices, you GIMP
