Manchester United goal keeper David de Gea says he retains a strong working relationship with Louis van Gaal.

The Spaniard was on the verge of joining Real Madrid, but his £29m transfer fell through on the deadline day. The 25-year-old was excluded from the United squad at the start of the season by Louis van Gaal amid the uncertainty.

However, De Gea says Van Gaal was quick to assure him that he remains a key player for United.

“From the first I day I came back, he gave me a lot of confidence, told me I would play, to relax and keep doing what I had done before,” De Gea said, as quoted by The Times

“He is a joker. He is a good person. You can talk with him about anything you want, and face to face he is sincere. We have a normal relationship between a coach and player.”

De Gea has signed a new contract with United until 2019 and has regained the #1 goalkeeping spot in the side.

Speaking to the ESPN Deportes show “Fuera De Juego,” the Spain international said: “I felt in that moment that to extend my contract was the best thing to do. I’m really happy now, at one of the biggest clubs in the world, where I feel loved by the fans.

“Nobody let me down or disappointed me — these are things that happen. You must look forward, and I am very happy now.

De Gea has been brilliant for United since his return to the first team, and has played a key role with United conceding just once in their last six games in the Premier League and Champions League.

Moving to the transfer news, according to reports from Eurosport, Manchester United will continue to monitor the Germany striker Mario Gomez over the international break.

The Besiktas striker has been called up to the German national squad for their upcoming friendlies against Netherlands and Argentina, and the report suggest United scouts will watch him closely.

Besiktas president Fikret Orman has insisted that any potential suitor will have to pay €20m and above to sign Gomez. The former Bayern striker has scored nine times already this season and is thought to be a reported target of Manchester United.
