David Villa - Chelsea or Liverpool?

David Villa has been repeatedly linked with Liverpool in recent weeks with Rafa’s long-term interest in the Valencia striker making for good transfer chatter.

Then there were rumours that Chelsea went for Villa last summer but weren’t willing to pay the asking price.

When it comes down to it, where do you think David Villa will / could go - Chelsea or Liverpool?

First up, I don’t think Villa will move in January. Any move for him will be in the summer, when he’s sure of his Champions League future and when clubs have more money to blow on a striker.

Chelsea and Villa

Chelsea don’t have space for Villa just yet - Drogba is not leaving, and unless Villa is willing to sit on the bench and rotate patiently with Shevchenko and Kalou (or just Sheva if Kalou is sent out on loan), there’s little chance Villa would want to move to the cushy bench of Chelsea (unless Valencia don’t qualify for the Champions League).

So - for Chelsea to grab Villa, one of the following has to happen:

  • Sheva has to be sold
  • Kalou sent out on loan
  • Valencia don’t qualify for next season’s Champions League

If none of the above happens - Villa is effectively playing 3rd choice at Chelsea. Don’t know if he’d be ok with that, especially at this stage of his career.

Villa’s finishing makes him a prime target and he seems fast enough to play in the Premiership (AND he’s just 25), so it’s not too far fetched to see Chelsea move for him (unless they move for Torres).

Liverpool and Villa

With Liverpool Villa is definitely going to have more chances to get games unless he flops spectacularly (although seeing how well Garcia and Alonso adapted to Rafa’s Liverpool, there’s little chance of Villa going bad). The Spanish influence at Anfield will help, as will the takeover and financial muscle that can pay Valencia’s asking fee as well as high wages to counter any offers from Chelsea.

For Liverpool to move for Villa, Crouch will probably be sold, and Robbie Fowler done away with. Don’t know how Bellamy and Kuyt will deal with playing second fiddle to Villa, but the addition of such a proven finisher to Liverpool’s ranks will help them a LOT in getting the goals they’ve always seemed to lack when challenging for top honours in the Premiership.

Final Verdict

Not this January. Summer? Probably, but I’d be surprised if he moved to Chelsea, and considering the high transfer fee Valencia are asking, surprised if Liverpool jump for him. David Villa, for all the speculation, could end up in Italy or stay in Spain, it’s all possible, and ironically, it could all depend on how badly Shevchenko does for the second half of the season.

  1. You contradict yourself there by saying Chelsea have strikers so he wont go there and then say more likely Lliverpool who have more strikers?

and also David Villa was at Anfield on Monday watching Liverpool batter Bolton.

and Garcia is godfather to Villa’s daughter.

Villa’s is good friends with Xabi Alonso.

He almost signed for Liverpool at the start of the season in 2005 but his wife was expecting in a few months so he did “not wanna after move to England with my wife still in Spain”, his own words from marca newspaper

What a load of nonsense. On one hand people are saying that Shevchenko is a waste of space, and now on the other your saying that a player of David Villa’s quality will play second fiddle to Shevchenko. Do you not think (definately on form) that Shevchenko will have to warm the bench? I know everyone wants to knock Chelsea, but adjusting any story just to applease yourself in just pathetic!

  4. Excellent site mate. Linked you up. Anyway Liverpool moving for Villa is definitely a welcomed one, but highly unlikely. Paying 20 odd million for a player is not of Liverpool’s principle (costliest player being 12 million).

But if the DIC takeover succeed, then you’ll never know what the new owner has in store. Cheers.

  5. I dont know about Villa but Torres definately wont go to chelsea. The fact that he has spent 3 seasons at his beloved struggling club when he could have moved proves that he thinks with his heart and not with his wallet. If Villa is smart he would know that at Chelsea your never assured of anything and the fact they have 3 strikers and a constantly PMSing manager would deter him. Liverpool seems the more likely option with the Spanish factor, but yea one stiker already there would have to leave. But dare i say liverfool becomes like Real where you have a strong foreign influence in a local club(brazliians in the case of Real) which cause groups and problems to be made ?

  6. i prefer villa goes to manu!! Coz manu need a striker like villa style!!! if want to choose either chelsea or liverpool i will choose liverpool!

  7. Villa is more interested in Liverpool becoz of the Spanish contingent and the fact that Rafa is a better ‘man manager’ that Maurine.

Liverpool would be the clear headed destination but I cant find a place for him with Crouch, Bellamy, Kuyt and God all in the same squad.

  8. I think liverpool should a be sure thing for villa if he decides a move abroad . The simple fact is liverpool are a micro-replica of the spanish national side , he would move in quite easily with the players ( xabi alonso , garcia etc … ) and the manager and fans . However questionning pools deep pockets I doubt this would happen before the takeover but more like post-DIC takeover . Chelsea dont have a chance in hell just because the number of strikers already that they need to please in their squad . Even though I wouldnt mind him moving to old trafford .. :P ( that would anger the kopites :) )

  9. ..Man Utd. Chelsea’s not good enough for Villa
    :P

  10. It is bettter for villa to be in chelsea

  11. Hello, my name is Alvaro and im from Valencia.

I think David Villa will be here because is our best striker and is a lot of expensive.

  12. To quote Todd “…liverpool are a micro-replica of the spanish national side…” Hardly, we have three Spanish players; Garcia, Alonso and Reina. Unless you want to count the one Spanish player in the reserves (Roque). I can’t really see the move happening though unless the investment comes through and even then, Crouch, GOD, Bellamy, Kuyt and Cisse+Pongolle on loan… it seems like a lot of wheeling and dealing would have to be done in the summer. Great site btw.

Iam A kopite an WE should go for it, if weve got the money, we should go for torres and villa, we’ll deffo be in the race for the title.

I hope david villa joins us at liverpool,he’d fit in better as liverpool are in some respects a spanish colony, and david villa himself stated that the only club that ever attracted him is Liverpool.rafa’s a much better manager in terms of understanding the spanish players and anyway’s maurine’s a sour grape.Liverpool have got money in the bank and if david villa joins Liverpool, they are set to win the ucl.walk on liverpool!

  15. David Villa-Valencia.

I would love him to go to Man United! He would be an awsome addition to the amazing squad ;)

  19. i think villa will come 2 liverpool in the summer definatly not in january. why ? torres is his striking partener for spain and is good friends with alonso lol. Also someone said earlier that he was at that the Bolton game ?
