David Trezeguet rolls back the years as his brace claims yet another scalp for Spanish minnows
French veteran David Trezeguet rolled back the years as he bagged a brace for his new club Hercules as they claimed yet another monumental scalp.
Sevilla are the latest casualties of the minnow’s crusade to slay the giants of Spanish football. The newly promoted side sent ripples all across Europe two weeks ago as they defeated league champions Barcelona 2-0 at the Camp Nou – ending the Catalans’ 17 game unbeaten streak.
Nelson Haedo Valdez netted a brace on that night but it was yet another of the Alicante side’s latest recruits who matched the same feat on Sunday in the form of David Trezeguet.
The former Juventus man dispatched a first half penalty thanks to Didier Zokora’s clumsy tackle on Tiago Gomes. The hosts could argue that they should of have had one sooner as Sevilla’s Alexis clearly tumbled Trezeguet to the ground during an off the ball incident.
The 33 year old then sent the Jose Rico Perez stadium into raptures as he netted his second of the game thanks to some lovely wing play by Roysten Drenthe whose cross was met by Kiko’s driven shot towards the far post and subsequently prodded home by the striker.
Sevilla dominated for large quantities of the game but couldn’t deliver a killer instinct in the final third.
It is their first defeat of the season and now sit sixth place in the table, five points behind leaders Valenica.
As for Hercules they sit proudly at eighth and are just a point behind the Rojiblancos. It is turning into a wonderful fairytale for a club who were in the third tier of Spanish football only five years ago.
